Lunchtime
Written by Jeff on February 9th, 2008Beautiful weather today for a bit of backyard bird watching. Here we have what I think is a Red-tailed Hawk eating lunch (a small bird of some sort) on top of an Oak tree near my house. That was only half the action though- I didn’t have my camera when a second hawk tried to steal this hawk’s lunch. They fought for a bit with some nice talon-on-talon action, but this hawk ultimately prevailed. It took him 5 minutes to gobble down his lunch.

this is one of the reasons I love living here - getting to see hawks in our own backyards……or soaring over Plum Canyon Road or Placerita…..

OMG, what great photos of that hawk! Such a beautiful bird. But…..I rescue birds, sparrows and doves, mostly, and when I release “my” little birds after putting a month or two into the feeding/rehabilitation process, I must admit, I always pray they won’t end up as hawk dinner. Once, we watched a pair of red-tailed hawks through binoculars for months as they raised a baby. It is amazing how big the baby red-tails get while still in the nest. We watched as the baby learned to fly and it was an unforgettable experience. When it finally flew off, it looked as big as its parents. Pauline.

Nice photos! Incidentally, it’s a Red-shouldered Hawk, a smaller, snazzier relative of the Red-tailed Hawk.
