April 11, 2008 - Daily Brief
Good morning SCVTalk! The weather’s been so great lately the last place I want to be is in front of a computer screen, but I must sacrifice for you, my dear readers. Welcome to Friday’s Daily Brief, the last Brief of what’s certainly been an interesting week in Santa Clarita.
News
- Gas hits $4 near Magic Mountain: The Signal’s A-1, top of the page story today was on a gas station near Magic Mountain that charged motorists $4.05 per gallon for premium fuel. Writer Tammy Marashlian spoke with a local car wash owner who’s studied the market: the average price of gas in Santa Clarita is around $3.75, $0.11 more than last week. “I would be shooting an arrow in the sky and not knowing where it would come down,” the owner said, referring to gas prices. The cheapest gas in the SCV is on San Fernando Road at 2nd Street. Link
- Rim of Valley Corridor project takes step forward in US Senate: A Department of Interior study to look at the wilderness area west of Santa Clarita was authorized yesterday by the United States Senate, the Ventura County Star reports. The chunk of land, known as the Rim of the Valley Corridor, is home to a broad range of “wildlife, such as mountain lions, bobcats and golden eagles,” according to Sen. Dianne Feinstein, who sponsored the bill. Plans for the land include building a system of trails. The bill goes back to the House before being signed by President Bush. Star Report
- LA County Courts and the new City Council: Recall that one of the big topics this year has been an idea (I’m not sure we could call it a proposal yet) to build and/or expand the Santa Clarita Valley Civic Center, which houses the SCV Sheriff’s Station, the jail, the county library, and a small courthouse on Magic Mountain Parkway. The existing Civic Center is 30+ years old and has been described as crowded, but it’s apparently not alone. The Long Beach Press Telegram reports today that such centers and courthouses across the county are literally “bursting at the seams” and that some have electrical problems, rodent infestations, and don’t meet seismic safety standards. With so many problems at other facilities, how much attention will the county pay to the SCV Civic Center? Link
- Smyth on state budget woes: Cameron Smyth, the freshman Assemblyman from Santa Clarita, talked with the Simi Valley Acorn recently about the state’s budget shortfall and its impact on education and public safety. To the Governor’s idea to release some 20,000 inmates in order to save money, Smyth had this to say: “If the governor wants to release prisoners, he should deport the 20,000 inmates who are not residents of this country back to their countries of origin before releasing prisoners into our community.” Smyth and his Republican colleague Audra Strickland are holding the line on the budget problems, saying they oppose new taxes and instead are harping on accountability and efficiency statewide. Smyth also recently posted an editorial on the effects of a tax increase on businesses in Santa Clarita. Link
- Newhall Farmers’ Market opens: Signal staffer Katie Geyer probably enjoyed taking a break from City Hall in order to write about the new (for the second time) Newhall Farmers’ Market which opened yesterday afternoon on Market Street in Old Town Newhall. Geyer talked to a few of the vendors and shoppers at the market and said that city organizers think the small market will expand in the weeks to come. Shoppers liked the freshness and thriftiness of the produce. The new market is open every Thursday from 3 pm to 7pm until October 30. Link
- SCV Holocaust survivor dies: Sheldon Mars, a Holocaust Survivor who recently was interviewed by students at Saugus High School has died, Carol Rock at KHTS reports. Mars agreed to participate in a sort of oral history project organized by Assemblyman Cameron Smyth in February. During the interview, Mars told the students that he “was sent to the ghettos of Germany, before being transferred in a packed boxcar to Auschwitz. During the year he spent there, nearly his entire family was killed. He spent the rest of the war working in various camps, making ammunition, or digging ditches.” KHTS has the obit plus the original story on the interview Mars gave to the students.
- Gibbon Center wants to move again: I say again, because the man who runs the famous Gibbon Conservation Center in Bouquet Canyon announced that he wanted to move in January 2007 to friendlier environs but is apparently still ensconced north of Saugus. Alan Mootnick, the respected non-primatologist who runs the center, is talking about moving again now and will host a vegan breakfast on Saturday to help raise money for the move. LA Observed’s Kevin Roderick recently visited the center and I Heart has some information about it (and a video) too.
- Santa Clarita Dodger Day auditions for National Anthem: Borrowing a page from American Idol, the City is asking interested people to submit a “VHS, 8mm video tape or DVD of themselves singing the National Anthem” so that it can help choose who will represent the SCV and sing the Anthem at Dodger Day on Saturday June 7th. The final decision will be made by the Dodgers, though. I guess YouTube vidoes of you crooning in your shower won’t count. More info
Real Estate
- SCV Retail market strong: Press release and Signal report today on the retail real estate market in Santa Clarita which continues its “best of” status in the state. A survey released says Santa Clarita is the “11th fastest growing retail market in the state and among the Top 25 Retail markets in California.” As we’ve read recently, over 1,000,000 sq. ft. of space is set to open in the SCV in the next 18 months. The ranking puts Santa Clarita ahead of trendy shopping areas like Santa Monica and Pasadena as well as Glendale.
- SoCal housing and tv/movie production: The Hollywood Reporter says that the slumping real estate market has led many Southern California homeowners to open their properties for television and movie filming. In some instances, income from renting out a house to a production can even be tax free. The article is mostly about high dollar houses on the ocean, but here it can also apply to Santa Clarita where many open their homes and neighborhoods to film productions and enjoy the monetary benefits. Hollywood Reporter via Reuters.
Blogs & Opinion
- SCV Walmarts and Economic stories: What’s with the recent string of media stories on the rising cost of food, the housing downturn, and economic troubles that also mention Santa Clarita Wal Marts? Yesterday, we reported that Chinese website posted a photo of an elderly woman browsing for bread at a Santa Clarita Wal Mart. Today, Reuters has a report on consumer confidence and a picture of a woman browsing for eggs at yet another Santa Clarita Wal Mart.
- Is it technically a Farmers’ Market if only one farmer shows up? I support the City and its plans to make Old Town Newhall into a pedestrian friendly destination, but yesterday’s rebirth of the Newhall Farmers’ Market was at best, modest, and at worst, pathetic. Only one real farmer showed up. The other vendors were Whole Foods (which seemed to be selling trinkets, stuffed animals, and some earth-friendly cereal), a lone guy selling cheese who told me he wouldn’t be coming back, and a bbq tent set up by Tresierras. Farmers’ Market staff seemed to outnumber the shoppers too. Music was good and welcome. But perhaps the City ought to do like Uncle Sam does: subsidize farmers and pay for them to come to the market until it gets off its feet. Hopefully next week’s event will be better.
- Newhall Ranch criticized at State CEQA hearing: The California Progress Report, a liberal state blog, says that some unnamed people discussing CEQA (California Environmental Quality Act) before the Legistlature in Sacramento were criticial of Newhall Land for dodging the act’s requirements on the Newhall Ranch project and “unduly influencing environmental impact reports.” The blog post mentions Impact Sciences, a firm that does EIRs and has connections with other development projects in Santa Clarita. No word on when the meeting took place, but the post says “local residents were able to uncover the truth” about a certain type of flower in the Newhall Ranch area, “but not before much of the habitat was plowed under.” Link
- *Gasp* McKeon working with a Democrat on textbook pricing? One of Congressman Buck McKeon’s focuses in congress is Education, and the eight term Representative must be happy with some of the press he’s getting lately. Yesterday, the New York Times blog mentioned him and Rep. George Miller and their efforts to address out-of-control textbook costs for college students. McKeon is actually working with Miller on the proposal, which would not do anything drastic but would “make it a lot easier for faculty, students and paretns to decide whether a particular textbook is wroth the cost.” Two years ago, McKeon visited College of the Canyons and talked about the high prices of textbooks. NY Times
- Bossert opines on City Council election, determines that no one would want to be a part of the City: The West Ranch Town Council president, himself elected two years ago by scores of voters during a July 4th afternoon, says the City Council election will go down “as one of the worst as far as I’m concerned…it was the lowest, the dirtiest.” He said he was hoping Laurie Ender would lose and that it’s up to her to “prove to skeptics that she is in fact her own person and not indebted to Frank Ferry.” Of course, anytime Mr. Bossert opines on city affairs, one has to realize he has a vested interest in portraying the City of Santa Clarita and residents east of Interstate 5 as bad, corrupt, or worse, so realize his overall point is that it’s a bad idea for West Siders to annex into Santa Clarita.
- SCVLife.net blogger sees smart car, doesn’t like it: A real, live, Euro-style Smart Car in the land of the giant stomper trucks and Hummer SUVs? Yes! And SCVLife.net even got a picture of it, but she doesn’t like the way it looks.
- Arbor Day celebration tomorrow: The City’s 19th Annual Arbor Day celebration will be held tomorrow in Central Park. Giveaways, free trees, demonstrations and entertainment are on tap, Carol Rock reports.

Re: Old Town Newhall Market
I will take the lone farmer and the cheese guy over any grocery store produce anytime.
First of all I was able to ask where their farm was and what kind of fertilizer they used for their produce.
Secondly the produce came from 60 miles away and it was about 2 days old and not processed. (think fuel savings, sustainability, and seasonal produce). Thirdly they threw in another basket-full of fava beans for free since I was there at the end. (I am looking forward to cooking them in a killer frittata).
In response to your subsidies comment. The US government mostly subsides single crop production such as corn, soy, cotton and other grains, to a great cost to the environment and the quality of our food. Farmers with seasonal, rotating crops might get very little in direct subsidies. They might get water and electricity bills subsidized if they process their produce. Here is a link to look up the subsidy numbers for California :http://farm.ewg.org/farm/region.php?fips=06000

Pauline Harte,
I want to thank you for kind remarks. I’ve had a lot of fun with those videos. I started doing little videos about a year ago with the Open Space stuff and that was sort of accidental at fist then it caught on.
When we had those fires last year I went out to get a look that night hoping I would get a little movie of some hills burning but soon found myself in the middle of flames, embers, wind and a lot of adrenaline and that made for some fun videos. The Towsley video was my Huell Howser monent for sure! It still makes me laugh when I see it but it is a good view.
You are 100% right about the Lyons off ramp. It drives me up the wall! I’ve been downtown about it 6 times now and is It’s still on my agenda . I’m glad you enjoy the movies. I will be finding more random things to film here and there. Stay tuned, I will be dazzling scv again with more of my random handy work. I’m open for ideas.
You have a great knack for writing and I appreciate that very much. It’s indeed a talent I wish I had. I’m sure as the months proceed on there will be plenty to write about. I look forward to the accountability faze with our new council. I’m sure you will play a part. At this point, a breath of fresh air is what a few people need in here. I hope they get some.
Have a nice weekend to you and your family.

With all due respect, the fair point of comparison is really the Farmers’ Market at COC on Sundays, which is at least 20x larger The market yesterday was poorly executed. There was clearly a lot of money spent in promotion, advertising and staff, money that would have been better spent “subsidizing” some farmers to come out for the first few weeks to get moving. We live really close to a rich and diverse agricultural region in Ventura County and within the reach of an unbelievable number of small farmers who fill up Farmer’s Markets throughout Los Angeles.
I had avoided this market during its previous go-around, because I got the sense from the website that it was much smaller than the Sunday market. But it sounded like a good idea yesterday. I can’t imagine going back - and I shop at farmers’ markets for nearly all of my produce. How can I be sure next week has any farmers at all?

one more thing with the market, I wish the article would have made some mention of the COC market to put yesterday’s market in perspective. Also, the city appears to have told the Signal just the day or two before that there would be 20 vendors on Thursday. I counted five.

It is unfortunate, but until Downtown sees a change in demographic, it will remain a hopeless waste of promotional money. At best it will end up like Downtown Santa Paula, chewing gum and all!.

Do you like anything about Santa Clarita?

Jeff: Sure I do, but your column only brings out the worst about the valley. I expect you do this for a reason, otherwise you would have no comment on your blog. By the way, in have lived in the valley since 1976 and I think the The Downtown Newhall situation is a disgrace.
DTN is rapidly become a Barrio. If you find that a good thing, more power to you. I do not, nor do I see much hope for the area.

I am writing down Farmer’s Market for next Thursday - I totally forgot about it, but I thought yesterday was Wednesday so I would have missed it anyway.
I think everyone on this board shows amazing writing skills. We certainly get our points across, and that’s 90% of writing, in my opinion. And most here make a heck of lot less typos than I do, sometimes I hit send and just cringe as all the typos jump out at me in 3-D. I am going to try to pay closer attention to that.
It’s the random, spontaneous things in life that are always the most interesting, so I will be looking forward to being dazzled with some new videos. And I will definitely be on board for the accountability/ethics movement at City Hall.
So today I have 10 baby ducklings swimming in my pool with their mommy, and they are having trouble getting out. I have cement blocks with heavy planks for them to walk on held in place with large boulders so they can make it to the top of the decking, because the ducklings can’t jump out, but mommy duck can’t figure this out. Wait til my husband sees all these blocks and boards and boulders in the pool. :-O She never minds the rafts and other stuff in the pool, so this shouldn’t bother her, but she isn’t getting it.
I got in the pool to try to herd them in the right direction, but it is SOOOOO cold, it’s still a pretty cold pool, and the wind is blowing real good. We’ll get this figured out, I’m sure. Suggestions greatly appreciated.

Think you’re mixed up. The Lindners are well known for selling bison meat at the Santa Monica Farmer’s Market, among other places. They live in Valencia, I think, but their ranch is in Northern California. Out on the grasslands, the Bison can take of themselves, mostly.

My ducks figured out my pool-side construction project and they all made it out of the pool with mommy! Thank goodness, I don’t have to worry about them now. They are basking in the sun with her. This is so cute! A couple of mallards flew in 3 years agao, they fly in at dawn, and leave at dusk, every day. Yes, Very messy, LOTS of daily clean up, but I don’t/can’t/won’t say no to any animals that find their way to me and fortunately I have a very patient husband with all this. Have a great weekend, everyone.

BARRIO:2 : a Spanish-speaking quarter or neighborhood in a city or town in the United States especially in the Southwest
I believe that Downtown Newhall has always been a Barrio, even before 1976, if I read this definition correctly. How do you suggest Cash that we change the demotgraphics of DTN? Or better yet, how would you change that area and Santa Paula for that matter?

Ducks,
I grew up in a small Washington state town right next to a large lake. One day I saw a mother and her little ones along with 6 other adult ducks walking about a half block away from my home. So I grabbed a few slices of bread and made a bread crumb trail that they followed. The problem was I made the trail go right into the upstairs of our house. I dearly wanted to see what it would be like to have a house full of ducks. Well… I got my wish that’s for sure. They ran everywhere and pooped up a storm, even on my parents bed. Yes, that’s right and just then my mother came home to our new duck farm I seemed to have made. I don’t think I ever saw that look on my mothers face before and I never thought I could pick a duck up by the neck and through then out the door either but I did, or else it was going to be my neck. They were OK, I ended up laughing up a storm with my mother, and I cleaned poop for the next 2 days. Needless to say, it’s good when ducks bask in the outdoors. With 6 boys running around things like that were bound to happen.

Enforce the immigration laws would be a good start. Using the word Barrio was a polite way of expressing my position. If the demographic remains, forget the redevelopment plan, or modify it to met the needs of the demographic. Trendy shops and fine eateries need not apply.

In the house??? Wow, 6 boys, your mother deserves a purple heart. I love watching these little cuties use my make-shift pier to get in and out of the pool. I have read up on baby ducks, and this is becoming a project, getting the right food (no bread for baby ducks) the right bedding, fixing the yard so predators can’t get in and they can’t wander out…….I am told ducks manage in the wild just fine without me, but I am beginning to find that difficult to believe!

When is a Farmers Market Not a Farmers Market?
Newhall isn’t even a mini-mini Santa Monica farmers market. / Photo by pink_fish13 via LAist’s flickr pool.
The answer to the above question, apparently, is when it’s held in Old Town Newhall.
We heart farmers markets because it allows us to buy our foods directly from the growers. We get fruits and veggies without that waxy residue found at most grocery stores while feeling good about supporting our local economy. And oh yeah, it just all tastes so…much… better.
So this LAist poster and SCV resident got all excited when we saw a press release from the City of Santa Clarita announcing the re-opening of the spring/summer farmers market in Newhall. Bands from CalArts would play, the mayor would speak and there would be purveyors selling their harvests. In its continuing effort to make Downtown Newhall the next Old Town Pasadena, they moved the farmers market from a parking lot to the street, closing off a block of Market (during rush hour traffic). But whatever, it’s Newhall, and many folks don’t drive down Main Street anyway.
So imagine our surprise when we showed up to the “farmers market” around 6 pm and saw the following: a tamale stand; a sausage stand; a granola stand; a Whole Foods information booth, as well as a lemonade stand (to wash down the aforementioned tamales and sausages, probably.) Oh yeah, and tucked away in the corner was a solitary produce vendor.
Today’s edition of the local paper The Signal, of course, doesn’t tell the real story of this farmers market debacle. If you look at the story’s tightly cropped shots at the farmers market, you’ll see that it was taken at the only produce stand.
Sorry, Newhall, but seven or eight stands does not a farmers market make. Go to Santa Monica, Hollywood or maybe Pasadena to see how it’s really done. Either that, or rename it the Newhall Farmer Market.

Cash, look - If your going to copy past a blog then say so. That simple. Mike caught you fare and square. You then try to dismiss your actions by doing the typical liberal approach, “why don’t you mind your own business, find something important to do, (a blatant attempt de-legitimatize the act of plagiarizing) and the best of all was, pay attention to your own work” Are you completely serious? In other words your saying please don’t look at the fact that, “I’m posting someones work that isn’t mine as if the intellect and verbal reasoning is mine so you think that I can formulate a logical essay.” However, don’t fact check me, don’t care if it’s really not mine, go fly a kite if you don’t like it. OK, Just like Hillary didn’t care if there really wasn’t any sniper fire in Bosnia. What the heck it sounds good so I’ll go with it. O ya, how dare you if you go back and look at the video. Why don’t you all just mind your own business and find something better to do? That’s exactly the king of reaction of one who knows they were caught. Cash, don’t post someone else’s words as your own then go on a diatribe of put downs when you get called out for it. That won’t fly anywhere and if you think it will then you stand to loose any credibility you may have. Please take this a friendly talking to so we don’t have this conversation anymore. It’s great having your opposing point of view I just want to know it’s your point of view. You should expect the very same thing from me. Thanks Cash, have a good weekend.

You know cash, I’m glad to know that you don’t care what anybody think about you. I don’t believe it. I have always been a fair contributer to your conversation regardless if I agree with you but I haven’t chosen to care less about what you think. And frankly, for you to claim that you don’t care what anyone thinks of you, or your opinion, is a bit disingenuous to the premise of a meaningful dialog. A blog is rooted in what the others think, feel, know and are willing to accept. The fact is, weather big or small, you did post an interesting article that wasn’t yours. You should have just said, “Hay I found this, it was good.” You didn’t. People loose careers for that. So that code of ethics is a big deal not an Molehill. Will you loose your illustrious blog career? No, just don’t personally rip people up and tell them where to do and what to do with themselves. Come on, not cool. Unless you were saving face… chief
“Ignore your code of ethics”? When we all post discussions here, whatever comes after that name (unless otherwise stated) is taken as Cash’s thoughts, skills, creativity, and intelligence. People respond with you based on a reputation you have shown by the respect (or otherwise) they’ve built with you. If ethics don’t mater then what does? What does?
That said, I was genuinely cordial in my last remarks and I’m not going to deviate from that now.

Unless you were saving face… chief”.
Save the preaching for someone that cares! The post was innocent and there was no intention to plagiarize.
If you are looking for me to apologise to you for the post, forget it. If I have created a problem with the author, that is between me and the author.

“A quick digression, but are all of you Republicans? Pauline, Tim, Sterling, David, cash, etc.? That is one big tent”!
Yes I am.
Yes I called back a portion of what I had stated. I believe you understand the intent of the statement, so we can move on if you like.

Rumor on the street indicates Ms. Weste has sold or is selling her Placerita Canyon property to the City. If the rumor is accurate, it appears her promotion of the downtown redevelopment plan may have finally paid her a very handsome return. It seems Mr. Palskamp may have a leaking ship.
Perhaps Mr. McFarland can look into this. It would be a travesty if Ms. Weste receives millions while the property owners along Main Street suffer.
At a minimum, it seems Mr. Palskamp may have a leaking ship.

“Brilliant observation on Palskamp & Westy, Cash!”
Are you doubting the potential for the sell is real? I know nothing has been brought before the Council, publicly at least.
Timing is everything and bringing something like this before the Council prior to the election, would not have been smart.
May have been a deal breaker for Kellar’s reelection..

wow, that is interesting. I wonder if it came from her brilliant Open Space assessment $ she hoisted on everyone. Something seems a bit to convenient with that. Cash, Did this come out in the Signal?

“Did this come out in the Signal?”
I did not read this in the Signal, had I, I would have indicated such to keep the piece on this board.
I learned this from an independent source. It was offered as “rumor”.

LOL, I had a feeling you would say something like that. That was funny. Actually, if rumor is true it would be interesting to have it delved into for more details.
“Peace” is on CBS right now. The Masters.
