Laurie Ender practicing for City Council role, friends say
Written by Jeff on April 21st, 2008Since her stunning victory on election night two weeks ago, Councilmember-elect Laurie Ender has been practicing for her new role on the City Council, friends tell SCVTalk.com.
Ender, a current Parks Commissioner and a former television producer, won first place in the election, beating even Mayor Bob Kellar who she edged out by scores of votes.
“She’s really excited about it,” a friend who asked to remain anonymous told SCVTalk.com. “She’s been practicing day and night since her victory for her big role on the Council.”
Among other things, the friend revealed, Ender has implemented a council-like agenda system to help run her home.
“For instance, last week, she motioned that the family have spaghetti for dinner. She asked for a second, but neither her kids nor her husband would raise their hand, so the motion and Laurie’s special blend of pasta, ricotta cheese and home-made marinara sauce, died.”
The family instead ate pizza for dinner after several family members seconded that motion.
The friend, who says she has known Ender for decades, says the agenda system has been applied elsewhere in the Ender home in order to familiarize Ender with the city’s governing system.
“The youngest child takes minutes of prior family meetings, and then reports back at the next meeting. In this way, the family knows exactly which member was assigned to what chore, and they all report back to Laurie, just the way the city staff does,” the friend told SCVTalk.
But Ender’s quest to become the perfect City Councilperson didn’t stop there, the friend says.
Two days after the election, Ender realized she didn’t have many lapel-friendly clothes to wear to council meetings. So she and her friend went on a shopping spree at Ann Taylor and other trendy womens-clothing stores on Town Centre Drive. The idea was to purchase clothes that would feature the City of Santa Clarita seal lapel pin prominently ahead of her big debut tomorrow night.
“Laurie wanted something that would bring out the colors of the city lapel pin in just the right way, so she chose a white blouse with a serious-but-not-too-serious grey coat for her debut on Tuesday.” The coat has a special hole in it to house a lapel pin, the friend says.
For elected city councilmembers, knowing how to speak while in session in the Council Chambers is an important part of the job. That’s why Ender has also been practicing “city-speak” in front of mirrors all around town.
“She practices her sympathetic voice, her serious and angry voice, and most of all her body language in front of that mirror,” the friend says.
For instance, Ender has been practicing using key city terms and even whole sentences in front of her dresser mirror since her victory. Ender’s friend says the councilmember-elect practiced this line in front of the mirror for two days: “The EIR for Phase One of the Newhall Ranch Specific Plan does not show adequate mitigation.”
But it’s not all business according to Ender’s friend. Ender has also been practicing to wave at people in advance of her probable inclusion on a City of Santa Clarita float at this year’s Fourth of July parade.
“She has a lovely wave and a smile, and she’s just going to knock their socks off,” the friend said.
Ender will be sworn in at tomorrow’s City Council meeting.
