Mother may have thought other children were tending to toddler
KHTS has an update this afternoon on the investigation into the death of a 2 year old boy who was left for hours inside a hot car in Canyon Country on Monday.
According to KHTS, the still-unnamed mother of three may have believed that her “other children were taking care of the young boy” after the family had returned from running errands.
The boy’s name has also been reported; he is Jack Roscoe Winchester, and KHTS says he was 23 months old. His birthday was on August 30, according to KTLA.
The woman had three children though their ages conflicted in different media reports. The Signal says the three children were aged two, three and five while KHTS says they were aged twenty-three months, four and six.
The two older children are being interviewed by Sheriff’s investigators today, as is the mother. Investigators told KHTS that the mother “appeared to have contributed to the boy’s death.”
Earlier today, The Signal’s Jim Holt reported that the mother was believed to be in her early 30s. KFI says that she was the one to realize her son was missing and ran to the car.
“At that point, she ran immediately to her van and found her two year-old son, who was still strapped into his car seat,” Butao says. He was unconscious and not breathing,” a deputy told KFI.
A neighbor called 911 at 5:10 pm, but when paramedics arrived, they were not able to revive the toddler.
An autopsy will be performed on the child, according to the AP.

This was a tragic ‘accident’ (to be sure) and one that can occur all too easily! When parents have so much going on and with young ones in tow, it’s surprising that these cases don’t happen more often. Thankfully however, they don’t. I remember a case where a father left his young child (in a car seat) almost all day while he was at work. Then there was a case where the father took off and left the car seat on top of his car.
I hope no charges are brought against this mother. She will have to deal with this her entire life and has 2 other children that need their mother on top of it!
Yes, this is truely a tragic story; one that reminds us to take it slower and take a minute or two and look around! My heart goes out to the family, especially the mother!

I saw lots of deputies racing to block intersections today for an ambulance. Does anyone know what happened today? Was it another child?

I cannot even imagine the hell this young mother must be going through right now. My heart is very heavy with news of this tragedy and because I know extended members of this family, I can say with absolute confidence that this was an accident!! A terrible, horrific, ACCIDENT!! The is no punishment that is greater than what she will put on herself for this happening to her beloved baby. While believing the statement above wholeheartedly, I do have to say that as a mother, I always took my children out of the car before anything else was unloaded and have difficulty understanding why anyone wouldn’t do the same. Heck, If they were old enough, I’d hand them something to carry! My heart goes out to the entire family and I pray that folks do the same - especially to have compassion for this mother for what was an accident and know that her pain is greater than any judgement put on her. God Bless Jack
