On Friday, two individuals in a Chevy HHR were parked on a Saugus road when a man “knocked on the driver-side window of the Chevrolet and pointed a gun at one of the victims.” The suspect ordered the occupants of the vehicle to get out, then drove off in the Chevy, followed by another suspect who was driving a white Toyota pickup. The victims called the Sheriff’s Department and reported the carjacking. The Signal says Deputies were able to track down the Chevy using the car’s “OnStar emergency system” and found the HHR in Newhall, sans license plates. Just then -apparently- the white pickup left the scene in Newhall and was pursued by Deputies all the way to Burbank, where cops arrested a 25 year old female suspect in the truck and a 26 year old male after a foot pursuit.  Deputies say the white truck was stolen in the SCV earlier this month, and plates for a PT Cruiser were also found inside the truck. As an aside, anyone curious as to why the Signal refused to use the term “carjacking” (instead referring to the crime as a car hijacking lol) even though SCVSheriff.com calls it such?
  • Channel 20 may be taken over by City, other Council news: Due to an obscure state law that passed in 2006, Time Warner no longer has to provide a Public, Educational and governmental (PEG) channel starting January 2, 2009, and that’s forced the city into the odd position of proposing a takeover of Channel 20, Santa Clarita’s only public access TV channel. At first, the city wanted to find a non-profit to manage the station, but obvious ones like Lauren Broadcasting lacked “available financial resources” to take over operations. So on Tuesday, city staff will request “$116,000 for one-time stuido equipment and costs associated with the continuing lease of the [pubic access building] on 14th street” plus an additional “$25,000…for the hiring of part-time contractual staff to manage the public access facility.” Tammy Marashlian has the story (and other council items) while an older article from Katie Geyer provides some more background.
  • New commercial real estate firm in SCV: Jones Lang LaSalle has opened an office in Santa Clarita, the SFVBJ reports. A man named Jim Lindvall will be in charge of the 10 person office, and he says the firm will “not be just a brokerage but will offer all of the service lines including project development services, marketing, and corporate solutions.” This isn’t very interesting news on its face, but I mention it because of the increasing amount of retail & commercial vacancies in town. Just take a drive on Creekside to see empty commercial spaces or visit any one of Santa Clarita’s dozens of recently-built strip malls to see how the economy is taking a toll on local commercial real estate. It didn’t turn out to be as scary as it sounded- when the fuzz arrived, they found three hunters who had legally shot and killed a deer in the forest area nearby. The CHP says these were some particularly lazy hunters: “They decided that the 14 freeway would be a lot closer to where they could get the deer out, so they decided to drag the deer that way and have their vehicle come and pick them up.” The hunters were cited by Fish & Game officials for not tagging the animal properly.   • Signal hires another Mr. SCV: What does a “Director of Operations and Marketing” for a newspaper with 13,000 subscribers do exactly? That’s the question I have after reading that Creekside has hired man-about-town Paul de la Cerda, formerly of the Small Business Development Center at COC. Among his qualifications, the Signal says de la Cerda can boast of 22 years of SCV residence, support for the Boy Scouts and the City of Santa Clarita, and it gives de la Cerda that crown jewel of SCV-cred, the term “community leader.” It looks like his job will have something to do with interfacing with other “community leaders”, working the internet, forging “new relationships” and marketing. It’s a bit confusing because the paper already has a “Director of Technology and New Media” position as well as a “Production and Operations Director” and a “Marketing and Community Relations Director” according to the masthead. But what do I know? Anyway de la Cerda was #20 in the paper’s Most Influential list in August (an honor recently disputed by one Signal reader), and before that, both I Heart and I noticed that he called himself “Mr. SCV” in the car he was riding in during the 4th of July parade. As all real Santa Claritans know, there can only be one Mr. SCV, and that title is reserved for wordsmith Big John Boston, who left the Signal last year.
  • More Signal ballot recommendations: I can understand and accept that The Signal recommends you send the entire “Republican slate” back to Sacramento, what I can’t accept, however, is that the paper tells you how to vote on Measures it has done little to no reporting on. As far as I can tell, The Signal has reported only a handful of times on Measure R, the half cent sales tax LACO MTA is proposing in order to raise $30 billion over the next 30 years to fund transportation projects county-wide. True, much of the funding will go to Los Angeles, and Santa Clarita stands little to gain locally, a fact Supervisor Antonovich has leaned on in his opposition to the measure. But such reasoning ignores the larger point- much of Santa Clarita not only uses Los Angeles infrastructure every day, but we would benefit from some of the possible projects, like a rail line over the Sepulveda Pass or even a subway to the sea. Hey Signal- when you don’t report on something, you have virtually zero credibility to opine on it. As for Measure SA- they have the credibility to recommend a Yes vote on that. Link

I like how the Times describes this really screwed up district: “So it’s good luck, though a bit of an oddity, that Senate District 19 –a sort of senatorial prom chaperone, keeping the 17th and 23rd from touching each other too much– has a real race.” If you’ve been paying attention to this blog for awhile, you know the contest for Tom McClintock’s seat is between liberal Taxin’ Jackson and conservative Phony Tony Strickland. Signal says Strickland, Times says Jackson, but you decide for yourself.
  • Bill Kennedy on City budget and quality of life: The Planning Commissioner tortures an airplane metaphor for awhile before he gets to the point: the City of Santa Clarita is facing declining property tax, sales tax and development revenue due to housing troubles and the economic downturn, but Mayor Bob has a plan of action. Mayor Bob recently “invited two dozen community leaders to discuss the issue over lunch” and came up with a big list of things the City can do. Among the solutions discussed at this extra-governmental luncheon of SCV power brokers: reducing regulation on construction, putting more emphasis on the Shop Local campaign, and encouraging more support for small businesses. It’s a good article, I’m not doing it justice, I just wonder why such weighty matters aren’t being discussed in a formal city council meeting, so the public can listen in. Link

    As for the local businesses, they just don’t get it. On Sunday I was shopping in the Valencia Crossroads Center - despite their almost identical next-door-neighbor Rooms n’ Blooms closing up shop - the sales person at Madalian could not be bothered to stop her personal chat to greet the potential customers entering the store. I see this over and over agin, these folks want everyone to “shop local” but they aren’t going to go one step out of their way to earn the business.

    Regarding the week that was chock-full of intolerance. I will respond to Linda Slocum’s blog here as I think there are many on this site who share her views.

    To equate the students who were intolerant towards Laseter with those in favor of proposition 8 by stating that “intolerance is intolerance” is not well thought out and an immature position. The word intolerant has no meaning in describing a view unless it is coupled with something to be intolerant about. All intolerance is clearly not the same, and some intolerance is actually a good thing. For example: I am completely intolerant of, and hate, the bullying that went on against Jeremiah Laseter.

    Societies show intolerance for certain behaviors by passing laws against them. I am glad my society has shown intolerance toward murder and has passed laws against it. Societies do pass judgment, and rightly so, on what is an acceptable norm to the society.

    Those in favor of proposition 8 are indeed intolerant. They are intolerant, and hate, the idea of changing the definition of marriage that has held since the beginning of the USA and every other culture in the world. Aren’t those on the “No” side of the issue also showing intolerance for those who want to uphold this definition?

    Calling those in favor of prop 8 intolerant is an attempt to make them out as haters of gays. I will use myself as an example to explain the fallacy of this. This year one of my fraternity brothers, who was gay, died of aids. Myself and two other brothers carried Nick’s ashes to the alter at his Catholic funeral. We all loved Nick as a friend and fraternity brother. The fact I am still pro 8 may shock some. It may be difficult for some to understand that one can hold our view that sometimes what is good for society needs to take precedent over a demand from one element of that society.

    Yes indeed, Santa Clarita is chock-full of intolerance. That being said, all intolerance is not equal. We need more intolerance of things that are bad such as the harassment of Jeremiah. And please stop using the intolerance word in an attempt to label pro 8ers as haters. It is just not true.

    We get it… you equate “murder” with “gay marriage”.

    Intolerance is the “unwillingness or refusal to accept people who are different from you, or views, beliefs, or lifestyles that are different from your own” per the dictionary. It has nothing to do with killing or harming others, although clearly those actions often result from people’s intolerance of others.

    There are no different “brands” of intolerance. You either are, or you aren’t.

    Linda, if you think my statement above equates murder and gay marriage I have to believe you really don’t have the capacity for clear thought. I brought murder up to exemplify that there are times when intolerance is a good thing. It is good to be intolerant of murderers. It is good to be intolerant of bullies. Yes that fits the dictionary definition. My argument does not say it is good to be intolerant of gay people, only intolerant of changing the societal norm of the definition of marriage. I hope this helps clarify my stance.
