We were taught that the Maccabean revolt was when they widened it to three lanes and chopped down all those sycamores.
big ups to the COC market, for real. The author of that piece is also known as the fruit detective and can often be heard in the market report at the beginning of KCRW’s Good Food. A local FM expert if there is one.
I was in attendance for TBB’s reach across party lines. I was really impressed. I’m coming around to the conclusion that he’s the best guy on the ballot right now. He’s running the sort of campaign Gauny should be running. Like cash has said, DG has been a disappointment so far.
Although I knew of the farmers market for a while I only started going a little over a year now. Now I rarely miss a week. I loaded up on tangerines last week too Jeff.
A can’t miss vendor is Beylik Farms. Their tomatoes have the flavor that is missing in store bought ones. They are also available year round as they grow in greenhouses.
As an historical note, protestant English Bibles did include the Apocrypha for quite sometime. The King James in particular for many years after its initial publication in 1611. They were rightly removed from the canon due in part that they never were part of the original OT canon and were never considered inspired as the other OT books were. Those interested can get more HERE
nothing on my pun? a chuckle?
Fred, agreed on the tomatoes. I love snatching up stuff from their seconds bin. Always a good deal and none too beat up to enjoy.
The best tomatoes at the market, IMO, are the heirlooms from the Bunny Farm organic people. Those are completely out of this world. They won’t have any for a good six months, but keep them in mind. Their peas are also far superior to other peas found around the market.
But I really like just about every farmer there. The prepared items don’t really do it for me, but the tamales are pretty good.
ND,
Unrelated, but I overlook your posts some times, maybe because I have a hard time sorting my NickelDimes from the cash and money laying around. I just sorted my RSS and caught up on what I’ve been missing. You are one of the sharp ones here. Keep it up.
Of course, when we were in disagreement, I was usually right
I mean Jim, agreed on the tomatoes. Fred, where do you stand on the COC Farmers’ Market? Too touchy-feely?
Evangelical Christians scoff at outdated church hierarchy that stereotypically defines Catholic religion,
Evangelical Christians do a lot of stupid things. A bunch of them put together a goofy evangelical enivronmentalist declaration. What evangelical Christians do, however, has nothing to do with the historicity of protestant Bibles containing the Apocrypha and it’s canonical status. Let’s stay focused.
PS you might want to tell the author of the Front Page “Untitled Document” site that he needs to title his web page.
Are you talking about the article by Webster I linked? It does have a title. Additionally, if you look at the URL line, (that’s the little line at the top of your browser thingy with all the funny letters and symbols that end with .com, or .org), it has the article listed at http://www.christiantruth.com which is William Webster’s main website.
I can link you a dozen or more sites that have the historical background to the Apocrypha if you need it.
Historically in the canon or not, the apocrypha does make for some good reading, bible-as-literature style.
I swear you guys are missing out.
On a lot of things.
No mystery in modern evangelicalism. It’s a very clinical and clean faith. Your sermons feel like college lectures, not religious wisdom imparted through the ages.
I want incense and vestments and golden chalices damnit!
Fred, “title” is an HTML term.
That is fixed to the end of the title of his web page.
Yes Jeff, the apocrypha makes for some good reading. The books of Maccabees do much to affirm the prophecies of Daniel which were made more than 300 years before those events with Antiochus took place.
On Harrison Katz:
I am impressed that a college student is even aware there is an election, much less running. Hopefully, he can get qualifying signatures. I know of at lease three candidacies that were strangled in their infancy because the candidate turned in signatures of non-registered voters or people who lived outside the City limits.
On TBB:
A continuation of his strategy to aggregate disaffected folks to dislodge an incumbent. Very difficult but no way to judge if it will work since it has never really been tried.
On DG:
So far just trying to go after the same support base that voted for the incumbents last time. Has not worked before. Unlikely to work this time.
I prefer an Evangelical pastor/sermon over a Catholic priest/homily any day.
As for the parishioners, it’s usually the other way around.
Mike,
I am happy you attended the forum last evening, and to see you are impressed with TBB.
I too think he is the best candidate for City Council in 2010!
OK, Timothy…shoot back as usual.
Annette:
I only opine on two things:
1. The sanity of candidates; AND
2. There numerical chances of winning.
Anything else is too subjective.
Mike and NickleDime:
As a practicing Catholic (emphasis on the word ‘practicing’, I’m not very good at it) I agree with your last comments. I love watching the spirit of some of the evangelical ministers I see on TV. On the other hand I really love the ritual of the Catholic Mass and Eucharist, that except for Latin, has been passed down for a couple thousand years. I find comfort in that ritual.
Jeff – It seems you may have not completely given up on your former Catholic faith to become an agnostic. Or are your comments only meant to be sarcastic?
Fred, ND is right. A major web sin. But there is a way out.
I don’t know what to tell you. I guess Webster is HTML stupid. Which is not uncommon. All I know is that the document is located at his website which is as I linked. Webster is a rather well known historian with regards to Roman Catholicism, having co-authored a three volume work on the subject of sola scriptura as well as a number of other books. My contention was to answer the assertion that the article is just an anonymous document written by a hack.
TM… if only you were as brilliant as you think you are. Bummer… And, if you only knew how boring you are to everyone but folks at the Signal. Yawn…
