While Jeff takes a much-deserved break from SCVTalk, some of us still need our DB fix. Here’s a feeble attempt from the peanut gallery… Apologies for any duplicate stories!
- Police chased a gun-toting, Prius-driving, mentally unstable Lancaster resident from Bakersfield (where he was ramming other motorists) all the way to Placerita Canyon. He was apprehended at the scene; amazingly there was only property damage. Hybrid stereotypes be damned! SIGNAL
- Scary dudes with knives on the loose in Canyon Country. SIGNAL
- World’s Oldest Profession found in SCV massage parlors, busted by the Sheriff’s (I swear I’m not making this up) “morals unit.” Some of the parlors aren’t even paying minimum wage. Hey wait a min… oh nevermind. KHTS
- Antonovich is helping to launch “CrimeStoppers” anonymous tipster program, allowing residents to submit tips via phone, web, even texting. LACOUNTY
- ThinkSCV for all your white collar scamming ideas. Here’s one: pose as a Federal Reserve employee, promise low interest rate loans to businesses, then collect an advance as a “minimum capital requirement.” Now I know we don’t have a Gucci store, but ThinkSCV when you get the proceeds, ok? SIGNAL
- Valencia Water Company is rolling out a new system of labeling customers on a scale from “Super Efficient” to “Wasteful,” then charging different rates for each tier. It’s modeled after another ten-shades-of-beige city, Irvine, so it must be a good idea. SIGNAL
- Speaking of paying more for the same thing… residents at the Polynesian Mobile Home Park in Newhall are protesting a 39% hike in space rental. SIGNAL
- City of Santa Clarita named top California city for use of technology in government. Now if we can only figure out what to do with the MayorDude site… GOVTECH
- Santa Clarita Bank moving HQ, adding a branch and buying the current Ethan Allen space to make it happen. It’s a bright spot in the context of an otherwise glum regional banking and SCV commercial RE story. SIGNAL
- Guarded vote of confidence for the SoCal housing market, replete with a quote from Emile Haddad (ex-Lennar, now heads Five Point Communities which aims to develop Newhall Ranch) who says construction is still a ways off. LATIMES
- American Public Works Assn. names the Magic Mountain/I-5 expansion “Project of the Year.” Clap now, but admit it– you grumbled at least once during the 3+ years of construction. CITY BRIEFS
- A Valencia boy is a finalist in the Baby Gap casting call, one of 20 picked out of 900,000 applicants. This is how inflated egos get started. God.Help.Him. KHTS
- The “Holly Jolly Trolley” is offering free rides between Town Center, Target and Kohl’s starting this Saturday. C’mon cash – isn’t this mass transit we can believe in? CITY BRIEFS ps Bets on whether “the undead” will resurface for a ride?
- “Diesel” the pit bull saved my life, says a local Valencia mom. LTE
- The Signal continues to add more charities to its list of holiday “Chances to give” article.
NickelDime,
Nice Job!
ND
Love it
to the rescue! Great work.
Thanks NickleDime…It’s like Jeff never hopped on that jet plane.
I think that the owners of the Polynesian Mobile Home Park are just trying to recoup money they lost in the lawsuit. Had they done the necessary repairs and maintenance before the flooding, they wouldn’t be faced with the cost. Also, according the the reports submitted, the owners of that land are paying off the interest to the bank that made the loan for the repairs;a loan the bank is reimbursing the owners!
Many of those residents are seniors on fixed incomes, and 200 more per month will, cause only further hardship to them, and to the others that cannot afford this large increase!
Okay, in regards to ‘wasting’ water, I have a question for someone who may be in the ‘know’.
On Wednesday the 25th of Nov. (day before Thanksgiving) I was walking my dog around a community park. While walking past the community pool, I heard water running. I looked through the fence and saw that there was a hose wrapped around the diving board and water was going into the pool, at a large pressure I might add. Now this pool was completely empty, except for a very large amount of fallen leaves. Skip to Friday (the day after Thanksgiving) and the hose is still on at full force. The pool is not filling, but rather the water is just going ‘down-the-drain’. The leaves have now increased also because of the number of trees surrounding the pool. Sunday, still on and the water has not risen indicating that the water is just go’n down the drain! I called Monday morn to the city and spoke to someone. She said she or someone else would call me back. Late that day, she did and said she was informed that it was some sort of “sewage cleaning”. I have never heard of this before. Can someone explain to me, how running water into a (Large) pool, containing lots of leaves, is cleaning the sewer? I didn’t understand, neither did she and I was out and didn’t have time to ask more questions.
Essentially, this water was running from (at least) Wednesday afternoon until Tuesday early eve (when I walked my dog and saw it was off). For at least 5 days water was running down the drain of an empty pool….why?
lvogel- unfortunately, public agencies have a poor track record of setting good water conservation example. LA Parks & Rec (which is the caretaker for most of SCV’s parks) was busted last year for similar behavior.
Jeff better take care. ND did as well if not better.
OMG! Who’s in charge of the asylum?!?
(nice job ND)
