January 4, 2010 – Daily Brief

  • Old Years Roundup: KHTS has a succinct and nicely-written article detailing their views on the top stories of 2009 plus another “Year in Review” article. The Signal, meanwhile, went all out, with articles covering what happened each month last year.
  • For SCV in 2010, a mixed picture: on the one hand, more crippling school cuts are expected (plus possible school closures in the SUSD), and the City will continue trimming its budget. On the other hand, more law enforcement sweeps are headed our way and construction of the Newhall Library will start just as the Cross Valley Connector starts delivering impatient drivers from points east and west SIGNAL
  • Bald eagle spotted in Santa Clarita during December bird count, but other native birds weren’t found, which worries Audubon folks (did the Bald Eagle eat the roadrunner?) SIGNAL
  • Among local Republicans in the state house, Cameron Smyth scores highest on renewable energy support, but his score is only 24%, says the California League of Conservation Voters BURBANK LEADER
  • Signal profiles three new City Council candidates, two of whom are in their twenties while the other is a retired Naval intelligence officer SIGNAL
  • SoCal realtor argues that there are up to 100,000 “Shadow inventory” homes (homes that are otherwise unavailable for sale for bank or other reasons) in Southern California. Interesting post. A local realtor has some comments on the piece too.
  • Tens of thousands of Southern Californians who live in flood-prone areas are being forced to buy flood insurance by FEMA. No word on SCV, but I imagine there’s more than a few flood-prone homes here LA TIMES
  • Newhall Bicycle Company moves to a new location on Main Street, will save money and have a better location to boot SIGNAL
  • Local artist puts on cool video/technology shows at showings in LA area SIGNAL
  • Signal Publisher Ian Lamont argues that Santa Clarita is superior to Long Beach (his old haunt) in many ways and that  The Signal is a “community newspaper” that doesn’t necessarily report on news, but actively helps others in the community SIGNAL
  • Regarding the above, and the two plagiarizing columnists dismissed in the last month, Dave Bossert asks, “How about more honesty and less sweeping the problems under the rug?” WRB
