  • Dave Bossert quotes unnamed source saying that Nabil Tawab, the 37 year old business owner who was killed in West Ranch just before Christmas, was shot three times in the chest, “apparently in a close grouping suggesting that the assailant may have carried out a planned ‘hit’ on Tawab.” The source also says the killer is probably long gone and maybe even out of the country. • City Council delays decision on Newhall Gateway project, decides to spend $200k on private firm that will develop an alternate plan for the site. I Heart SCV, KHTS
  • Also, the City Council formally approved handing out $100,000 in government cash directly to Newhall businesses. Unknown if giant novelty checks were involved.  One business plans to buy new sinks with our money SIGNAL
  • The Saugus Union School District held an informal meeting with parents to discuss possible school closures last night, according to SCV Mom’s Blog. On Twitter I read that the place was packed, but no decisions were made last night. Watch SCVMOMSBLOG for more
  • Are you a woman? Can you think of nothing better to do on the Saturday of Valentine’s Day weekend than spend it with Buck McKeon? Well then have I got an event for you. The Congressman is hosting his first ever “Women’s Conference” at COC on February 13 exclusively for the XX set. Breakout sessions on healthcare, finance and your proper place in the home, barefoot and pregnant, will be held so come on down! McKeon.House.Gov
  • If Buck McKeon were king, the first thing he’d do to help the economy is “eliminate the capital gains tax”  because it’s business, not the people, who are really suffering in this recession. The VV Daily Press thought that answer was a step in the right direction but dinged our Congressman for not knowing how much the taxpayer-funded payroll is for his office staff VV DAILY PRESS

Later, they attempted to buy cocaine from an undercover federal agent in Bakersfield KERO 23 NEWS
  • A 3.5 mile long “super freight train” rumbled through Southern California last weekend, catching public officials and transportation experts off guard.  The UP Train was bound from Texas to Long Beach. UP says it was just testing the configuration and doesn’t plan to do this all the time, but public officials say if they keep running big trains like that, there will be consequences LA TIMES

  • Los Angeles County will hold its first Bicycle Advisory Committee meeting tomorrow. The BAC will advise the County on bike infrastructure in unincorporated areas. Supervisor Antonovich has appointed two local representatives.  This could be important for the SCV since we have so much territory that is unincorporated. STREETSBLOG LA
  • The American Lung Association says Santa Clarita gets a big fat “F” for Tobacco and smoking control. The ALA gave Santa Clarita one point for controlling smoking in recreational areas but judged us harshly on all other criteria. Some of these criteria seem a bit unfair (can we really forbid local pharmacies from selling smokes?) SIGNAL, ALA

  1. Fred Butler says:

Seeing Buck on any day would probably be a big bore for myself and the wife, but she did want you to know she is happily barefoot (not pregnant, though) and finds her ultimate fulfillment in the kitchen as a “progressive’s nightmare,” that stay at home wife.

  2. Jeff says:

Does your wife enjoy have the article “the” attached to her, as if she was a piece of furniture or a pet? :)

My wife works and wears the pants in the relationship so I’ll have to check with her before replying to your wife. That’s the true progressive way.

  3. CC says:

Should I wear my prarie dress to Buck’s event?

  4. mike says:

Fred, you are a bitter man. Do you always speak in generalizations?

  5. SCVFan says:

How petty this all seems when considering the suffering in Haiti.

  6. Fred Butler says:

Does your wife enjoy have the article “the” attached to her, as if she was a piece of furniture or a pet?

She acknowledges a hearty “Yes!” “The” wife of Fred. She adheres to a robust Puritan ethic of marriage. They are, by the way, why you enjoy the society you live in. =)

Now Mike, you have my curiosity going. How exactly did I give the impression I am “bitter?” I am probably one of the happiest guys in the world.

  7. Timothy Myers says:

Is Fred one of these guys who believes they have the perfect marriage right up until the moment they smell the gasoline and hear the match being struck?

  8. Fred Butler says:

Now Mike, that comment by Timothy is a good example of being “bitter.”

  9. mike says:

Fred, I’m relieved to know that in real life, you are happy.

  10. mike says:

I met Tim once and he seems happy as well, but it might have been his lucky hat.

  11. spineflower2 says:

My wife is not happy being referred to as “Mrs. Spineflower2″. She had no problem taking my lat name, but to also lose her first is insulting.

Old people do not mean disprespet (quite the opposite), but it just doesn’t fit today.

In another couple of generations, the taking of a common last name may become a 50/50 choice, as the male-dominated practice becomes as quaint.

  12. Timothy Myers says:

    Fred:

It’s a joke!!! Lighten up!! Sarcasm, the trademark of EVERY midwestern Lutheran.

    mike:

I WAS wearing my lucky hat on behalf of Joe Messina on election night. It was such a near thing I feel perfectly justified giving my lucky hat at least part of the credit!

  13. Jane says:

Yeah, Buck is so enthusiastic about his Wimmin’s Conference he doesn’t even have a keynote speaker yet. Probably had some sort of grant money he had to use.

  14. v-town OG says:

word is, one of Buck’s guys has an “in” with Vakay.

    G STYLE!

  15. Jeff says:

SCVFan, it is indeed, all vanity and very petty.

What can be said? I’m at a loss for words. I feel like after the tsunami in 2004

  16. mike says:

Wyclef’s established Haitian charity has set up an earthquake fund. Easy to donate online, or text YELE to 501501 to donate $5 (will appear on your bill). Repeat.

  17. Todd says:

As much fun as it is to poke at Buck….

Yes, the city could enact a smoking control ordinance which restricts the type of businesses that can apply for and receive a permit to sell tobacco. (IE, Pharmacies, etc.)

I’ve always enjoyed the fact that you can buy alcohol and tobacco at your local pharmacy…. “Yes, hi, lemme have my blood pressure meds, pack of Marlboro reds and a bottle of Jack Daniel’s please….”

  18. Uh, it is businesses that create the jobs that put people to work. Removing the Capital Gains tax will allow businesses to invest for less money which frees up more funding to expand their businesses THUS HIRING PEOPLE. Come on Jeff, you’re smarter than that.

  19. GangFang says:

Good ol’ Buck. Still shoving his head deeper up his own bum.

Remove the Capital Gains tax? Try removing the blinders from your narrow vision, Bucky.

  20. Todd says:

    Kevin-

Capital GAINS tax. If a business is using the profits they’re making to pay for employee expenses… then its not a gain now is it?

  21. Fred Butler says:

But Todd, it’s THEIR money. Their the one’s who worked to earn it and their the ones who know best how to spend it, not the government. You’re not for that death tax, too, are you?

  22. SCVFan says:

Jeff: At a loss as well. I’ve been to the country and it hits very close to home. I have missing friends most likely dead.

  23. “Breakout sessions on healthcare, finance and your proper place in the home, barefoot and pregnant, will be held so come on down!”

It is our duty as women in society to put our shoes on and find out what the heck our role really is. We’ll report right back to you, Jeff. Stay tuned!
