Old Man River about to flow again

The blog I Heart quoted from today in his post about the forthcoming storms is a goldmine of science and predictions for the interesting weather ahead:

After a very prolonged period of benign and mostly dry weather across the entire state brought about by an anomalously and almost bizarrely persistent high-latitude block for much of the winter season thus far, a major shift in the hemispheric flow pattern will being a prolonged period of heavy rainfall and strong winds to the entire state of California. Though there have been a few large storms California over the last few years, the first decade of the new millennium  was generally not known for its active weather patterns in our state. The new decade appears to be trying to make up for some lost time in that regard. For the first time in at least several years, a powerful southern stream branch of the jet stream over the Pacific is expected to roar across CA for at least the next two weeks, potentially bringing a tremendous amount of precipitation and frequent strong wind events.

Wow!

I Heart wondered about what the Santa Clara river might look like as these rains dump several inches on the SCV. I recorded this video about two years ago following six days of rain. Sure this footage isn’t that special, but it’s amazing when you consider how dry the river bed is for much of the year.

The river out by the 126 was really amazing- over 100 feet wide, moving swiftly toward the ocean and carrying tons of natural and man-made debris.

Anyway, time to clean the gutters.

It is amazing how much water we get in our river, it’s beautiful where she gets to run wild. I love to hike up in Towsley Cyn, (not brave enough to bike it!!), after the rain and see the streams from the mountains. Best to you and the family for a Great 2010.

Enough of these climate scientists, I want to know what Rush Limbaugh and FiscalCon have to say about this, then I will believe it.

  3. Jeff says:

Don’t forget drudge. He posts a graphic and a link every time the mercury dips. He has more data and information on climate than all the climate scientists. I trust him to forecast weather 50 years out

  4. mike says:

I love that on the weekend where we were roasting in January (in his hometown, no less) that he had no less then four links on his homepage to the effect of SHOCK: IT’S COLD IN WINTER.

And guess what? He will probably be right on, too.

  6. mike says:

…because my political inclinations lead me to believe that.

For me it’s the facts of the matter. You know, those gigantic inconsistencies with the wild-eyed claims of climate doomsayers and genuine, real science. Not that pseudo stuff from the various teams of left cranks.

  8. Jeff says:

Oh right. It’s about the science to you. And the IPCC and virtually every major North American university is populated by left wing cranks.

There is a high degree of correlation between climate change deniers and creationists, so to your credit, at least you’re being consistent.

  9. mike says:

Some folks judge science on how well it compares to a pre-determined conclusion. Thankfully, few are actually scientists.

  10. NickelDime says:

Did anyone happen to catch How the Earth Was Made on the History Channel a few weeks back?

I DVR’d it and watched it a couple times – so fascinated with the cause/effect of the weather on the earth.

Really, really worth the time – if you see it pop up on Discovery, take a few mins and check it out.

  11. NickelDime says:

Sorry – it’s History Channel (not Discovery Channel).

Pretty much; or at least heavily influenced by them. If your project funding is threatened because you don’t get on board with the status quo, then of course man-made climate change is true. You need to read Crichton’s article on the power of political consensus in science.

There is a high degree of correlation between climate change deniers and creationists, so to your credit, at least you’re being consistent.

So that whole “Climategate” scandal in the academic world is really a Glenn Beck stunt?

Some folks judge science on how well it compares to a pre-determined conclusion

According to Jeff, climate doomsayers are pure of heart with no preconditions driving their conclusions at all. Those who challenge those preconditions are akin to denying the Holocaust.

  13. Jim Farley says:

Speaking about climate change, actor Danny Glover came out and said the Haiti earthquake resulted from global warming and the fact that not enough was accomplished at the Coppenhagen summit.

Water in the Santa Clara. How novel is that. I’ve seen it take out Soledad Canyon Rd twice now. Heaven help Bridgeport.

  15. Jeff says:

navigator, I sense you have many stories you’re just yearning to tell. hows about you join Tim Myers and NickelDime and start blogging

  16. mike says:

speaking of which, is that standing offer still standing? $175 per post, right?

  17. navigator says:

    Jeff,

I am flattered (I think) that you would say that but I’m one who likes to join a conversation rather than start it. I wouldn’t even know where to begin.
