Jim you raise an interesting point, whether you meant to or not. As a, for lack of a better term, Gen-X’er who along with my friends, have kid(s) and mortgage(s), I wonder if there might be a blip in the normal (though overstated) pattern of shifting ideologies.

So here’s my guess – people that had set into their lifelong political ideology by say 2002 or 03 are too old to be affected. People who are becoming politically socialized now are too young to have been affected. But for those of us that went to college, got married, got a real job, bought a house, had a child and so forth during the Bush years will for a long time vote more Democratic for their age than generations before or after.

In other words, when it came time for us to become Republicans, we were witnessing a Iraq, Katrina and an imploding economy. We may not be sold on the Democrats, but we certainly aren’t going to become Republicans.

Speaking for myself, I flirted with your side for a bit after 9-11, disgusted by the reaction of some on the far left. You lost me at Iraq. Similarly, I knew Jeff in high school and he was as outspokenly conservative as they came. When I ran into him years later, I was surprised, but not totally, to see that his Gingrich-bred conservatism didn’t last through Bush.

ND – That’s the first time I heard a name for the generation after generation ‘Y’. My kids born in 1988 and 89 are solidly Millenials. One is pretty conservative in political thought, and one is libertarian. To say the generation is going to stay ‘progressive’ long into the future is quite a prediction. My sons and their friends all seem to be pretty bright but not yet that concerned about politics. As the Millenials age, start families and have kids I think we’ll see a predictable shift to the right.

I think Bob’s comments reflect more of “middle America” than any Right Wing Radical. Perhaps, Jeff, you lean so far left, that you can’t get perspective.
