January 25, 2010 – Daily Brief

  • Roger Gitlin puts out a call to anti illegal immigration activists to show up in support of Bob Kellar at tomorrow’s City Council meeting. The email  includes exhortations to attack other Councilmembers for not supporting Kellar FORUM
  • CBS 2 briefly covers Kellar remarks CBS 2
  • As for the real business the Council will attend to, the Signal focuses on a median irrigation project that could save 20-30 million gallons of water per year. There’s other items too, check Friday’s Daily Brief for more SIGNAL
  • David Gauny held a fundraiser last week at Robinson Ranch that was well attended. The fundraiser was hosted by Bob Kellar and included Buck McKeon’s deputy chief of staff, Bob Hauter, Bill Kennedy, and a few other a-listers. Gauny told the guests that City leadership is arbitrary and capricious, giving a small land owner in Newhall a hard time (Sierra Gateway) while not being thorough enough with larger projects, like the proposed Sheraton. He also says OVOV paves the way for “massive density increases.” BEACON
  • Hart Superintendent Jaime Castellanos will retire at the end of June. KHTS says he gave no specific reason for leaving the post of the 20,000+  student school district, but one wonders if the makeup of the new board has anything to do with it. KHTS
  • Southern California beaches a disgusting mix of “mangled shopping carts, bicycle tires, tennis shoes and thousands of plastic cups and bottles” after rainstorms like the ones we had last week. LA TIMES
  • The top six best hikes in Southern California after a rainstorm. The LAist editor adds our own Towsley Canyon to the list LAist
  • Nearly 60% of Californians believe the state is worse off at the end of Governor Schwarzenegger’s term that it was at the end of Gray Davis’ term LA TIMES
  • In 2009, the City of Santa Clarita removed 7,503 graffiti tags around town, the majority of which were placed on walls and utility boxes. Hot spots included Whites Canyon, Camp Plenty, Lyons and Northbridge & Old Orchard paseos. Nice work! CITY BRIEFS
  • Northpark, the Valencia Super Church, has fully moved into its new building and has plans for yet another building that could seat 5,000 people. Also, in other church news, that church buried in the ground near Bridgeport is coming along too. KHTS
  • Letter writer suggests Old Orchard HOA renegade can take his namby-pamby artistic tastes to Venice Beach, where such expressions of dissent belong. Conform damnit! LTE
  • Dinks opens tomorrow at the Patios. I’m detecting a noticeable buzz among the more food literate in the community
  • Tim Myers Math strikes again. In this column, he says TBB needs 5,500 votes to win a seat. That’s 34% of the non-incumbent voting electorate. He also writes a bit about Gauny SIGNAL

So now we can thank Roger Gitlin as well for bringing the crazies to our happy little burg. Prepare to be shocked in a new way by some of the comments you hear on Tuesday, especially when they lay into the other four council members.

Regarding Bob Kellar, I’d like to know why reporters or anyone else, for that matter, would ask for comments and opinions on any issues from admitted plagiarist Carol Lutness. Where was Bruce McFarland’s outrage about Lutness admitting to using the writing of others and passing it off as hrr own? Same goes for admitted plagiarisy Lynn Vackay.

As for Laurie Ender’s “shock,” OH PLEASE! Did Ender ever return that ILLEGALLY obtained campaign contribution of $12,000 from Frank Ferry? Why hasn’t The Signal continued to keep us updated about the illegal campaign goings-on between Ferry and Ender? Until we hear that Laurie Ender and Frank Ferry have cleaned up their own dirty backyards, I don’t want to hear about their moral outrage about anyone else.

I don’t condone Bob Kellar’s admission that he is a “proud racist,” while serving on our City Counci, but I don’t want to hear hypocrites like Carol Lutness or Laurie Ender and Frank Ferry commenting about the unacceptable behavior of other people when their own behavior has been dirty as hell.

Looks like Dinks is going in a new direction, but I’m not sure what to make of it. They are expanding their breadth, but I’m most curious to see if their existing fare gets an upgrade. As present, they serve a passable pastrami. More often than not, it’s served on stale rye bread and the meat can be rubbery. My only wish is that the rising tide lifts this sandwich to a happier place. Keep your eyes on the prize, Dink’s. We are counting on you.

The best pastrami in town is at a chain – Gandolfo’s in Castaic. Mind you, they source their own special pastrami instead of the corporate-supplied stuff.

Good observations. Sure wish SCVTalk had a decent food writer, especially when the byline says “blogging news, politics, culture and food”

Re: Jaime Castellanos. I heard last fall from the spouse of a Hart Board member that the Board last Fall decided not to extend his contract, which is in essence a vote of no-confidence.

    On Graffiti:

This is an area that our city needs to be truly congratulated on. They do a great job of removing grafiti quickly. That in turn discourages the ‘artists’ from tagging again. It’s interesting that Northbridge is an area listed as a Hot Spot. I’ve probably reported at least 20 incidents of graffiti on the e-service link on the city’s website. We sure don’t fit the profile of a neighborhood that would be graffiti prone, but we sure do get it.

  14. mike says:

Jim, you raise a good point. If there’s a graffiti problem, I’m not aware of it. The city must be doing a very good job at removal.

  15. Bruce McFarland says:

    Hello scvTalk readers,

    About Bob Kellar:
I am formulating a column for the Signal about Bob Kellar, so I really appreciate everyone’s input on scvTalk. Jeff has done a great job covering (and breaking) the Kellar: “Proud Racist” news.

Jeff’s opinions have been well considered and appropriate for the situation. Way to go Jeff.

About Carole Lutness, I am VERY disappointed in her for republishing, without attribution, parts of previously publish works.
The Signal’s Democratic Voices column is supposed to reflect the writer’s original ideas and words. Unfortunately, Carole decided that someone else’s words reflected her opinions better than she could come up with at that particular time – she was wrong.

scvTalk readers may not have noticed, but I wasn’t one of those who piled on Vakay.

Carole was appropriately punished by having her columns removed from the archives and by being forbidden to write. And by the way, no one ever asked for my opinion – someone here mentioned it, so I thought I would respond.

    Bruce,

I can well imagine the kind of column you’ll come up with for the Signal. The crap you’ve brought up in the past regarding our councilman is proof enough that this future column won’t be worth reading either.
