January 27, 2010 – Daily Brief

  • Outside City Hall last night, Minutemen and John Birchers clashed with out-of-town immigration activists, even asking some of the protesters to show their green cards. Inside City Hall, however, the sentiment was almost universally in defense of Bob Kellar. Almost, because several speakers said Kellar should apologize and/or remarked that he had violated the City’s Code of Ethics. Emblem may only be shut down for one year. The new school is designed “to have an innovative curriculum that district officials hope will reverse the district’s declining enrollment problem by drawing charter and private school students and students from outside Saugus Union’s boundaries” according to the SIGNAL

I’ve come to the conclusion that those of you who wish to continue to beat the Bob Kellar is a racist, should apologize, step down, be recalled, etc drum don’t get Bob or the issues at all. To you, a good day in la la land.

To IHearSCV: TBB knows what I said and how I said it. He was seated behind my right shoulder so doesn’t need to also read it. I emphasized the pronunciation of my name for three reasons. One: Mayor Weste misspoke my name twice, although she usually gets it right, by calling me Berta Harper González. I’m sure it was because of all the tension at the meeting and not an intended slight. Two: Because I felt it important that anyone listening who does not read this blog or know me personally understand I am not a member of the GOBN, radical anything, or with any other agenda than to right a wrong. I am an older, female, Hispanic and have experienced racism and prejudice first hand. I also know Bob. Those are my credentials to speak to the issue. Third: Lots of people mispronounce and misspell my name. Some unintentionally, some not. In fact when I meet people in person I usually say “Berta: pronounced bear like a teddy or grizzly depending on the circumstance with an “uh” at the end, and González with a z at the end.”

David Gauny: I think both your comments at last night’s Council meeting and your article in the West Ranch Beacon today only prove what I have noted before and keep saying. You are a critical thinker who does his own research, makes a fair and reasonable assessment of the facts, and you have the courage to stand by your convictions without prevarication. You didn’t take the easy way out, look for cover, or use an uncomfortable situation as an opportunity to make points for yourself. I again say, I would be very happy to have you representing me. Just like with Bob, even when we disagree, I can expect a response to my concern, and a respectful, reasonable discussion encouraged from all parties. In fact David, you came off as quite the Statesman. Maybe you should run for Buck McKeon’s seat? Thank you for standing up for what is right.

TimBen Boydston: I want to thank you for moderating you comments somewhat. I believe you were barking up the wrong tree again but at least I respect that you did not launch into an attack on Bob but kept it to the issue you felt relevant. There is much more I could say but for today, truce.

Council members: Ferry, Ender and McLean I usually defend you against unwarranted attacks. You did not do the same for your fellow Councilmember Kellar. Your backpedaling last night was too little, too late. I would have more respect for you if all of you had said something fairly non committal like “Councilman Kellar spoke as an individual and whether I agree with him or not, that is his right guaranteed under the Constitution of the United States of America.” Mayor Weste your “no comment” was not the best you are capable of but thank you for at least not adding wood to the bonfire. You ALL left Bob twisting in the wind. Not your shining moment for democracy and nothing to raise your individual standing in my book.

Jeff Wilson: I think you and others, particularly the newest poster, are laughing your a*# off in the background. I won’t bite. I’m basking in the glow of real democracy at work and all those Americans who spoke out against injustice.

Berta – Bob left himself twisting in the wind by not specifically stating that he wasn’t speaking in his role as a member of the council.

In my opinion he was stupid to make the kind of analogy he did. Are you really expecting everyone to believe that with all of his years in public life he couldn’t be expected to know that the words could be twisted?

    still laughing my a*# off.

it’s really simple-it’s always very convenient to slam “those illegals”…until of course you don’t feel like paying a licensed contractor to stick that pretty new driveway in that your HOA demanded you do so as not to upset the Disneyland asthetic of SCV…or to mow your lawn for cheap…or the housekeeper you have twice a month…or….or….or. Pleeeaaase…Kellar and the Minutemen or teabaggerz or whatever they like to proclaim themselves are no better than Hitler himself who blamed a certain group of people for all the woes of their country rather than looking at themselves and perhaps their own accountability for why we’re where we are. A racist is a racist no matter how you want to frame it and he embodies the image people have of that valley. like i said…what a proud moment for you all. The internet and blogs are plastered with “SCV-Bob Kellar-and racism” and no ad campaign on city buses or signs over the bridges are going to change that. From now on ThinkSCV will stir images of a bunch of pissed off white people gathered at a lynch mob-type rally ready to “go get those illegal bastards”. Good job. I’m sure this is exactly the image you were trying to portray to potential commerce and people thinking about buying up all those pretty little foreclosed McMansion tract homes …Here! Here! Job well done Bob!

  31. lvogel says:

I’m curious; how many on this site would refer to themselves as a “proud racist” and under what circumstances would you call yourself that?

I too have seen racism first hand, and personally, I would not want to be associated ON ANY LEVEL with that term.

We heard a pastor refer to illegals as “evil”; there is a video of the ‘organizer’ of the RALLY stating, “Politicians will acknowledge your power when they see a round flying through their windshield and getting into their flesh. That will get their attention…” and then one of our council members refers to himself as a proud racist because he opposes illegal immigration.

I believe that if Mr. Kellar stated the following, “hello, I’m Bob Kellar. I am a city council member here in the SCV, however I’m not HERE representing the city, but as a private citizen to speak about my concerns regarding our ‘illegal immigration’ problem.”, then perhaps we would not be having this discussion.

However, he didn’t. He stood up and spoke his words following the pastor and after being introduced by someone who basically concluded in the video Jeff posted, that shooting our politicians is a way to ger their attention.

BTW, who invited these ya-hoos to speak here, on the property of our civic center, in the first place?

I think we still would be to some degree. Using the term “proud racist” was a lack of judgement IMHO, regardless of any disclaimer stuck in front of it, context or not. TBB just wouldnt have had something to talk about at the meeting last night.

“someone who basically concluded in the video Jeff posted, that shooting our politicians is a way to ger their attention”

It seems that misrepresentation once again rears its ugly head. The fellow that spoke didn’t say we should put a bullet through a politicians windshield. His intention was that the politicians would wake up when some illegal put one through their window. What is meant and what is heard always seem to be two different things. Hence, the outrage over Kellar’s statement.

Jeff: I think you are completely misunderstanding my comments. Why does this keep happening?
I think I am being clear. Maybe you guys hear what you want to hear through a prism of antipathy, I don’t know. Ok, deep breath. Keep it short Berta. At the risk of “altering the balance of the force” (can I be Leia?), Jeff I enjoy your website. I read all comments on topics which interest me. I disagree with many of the posters on this sight but enjoy a good debate and learning what the other side thinks. Offering my opinion, offers balance on some of these issues. It amazes me sometimes how we can all be looking at the same issue (s) and see them so differently. And the viciousness of some these attacks truly make me sad. We need to be able to talk to each other no matter what our political party, religion, race, ethnic background, etc in order to better understand each other. If we can’t talk to each other and understand what the other person is saying on this blog, how can we expect our elected representatives to get anything done in Washington? Come on Jeff.

Kellar was on KFI’s Jon & Ken show this afternoon. He said that many times people have complained to him of having their neighborhoods ruined by large groups of immigrants occupying single family homes and creating disturbances. He spoke of calling a meeting about a year and a half ago with all the city departments to try and figure out what could be done to change the situation. According to Kellar, the result of that meeting was that no one in an official capacity could do anything.

Jon & Ken were very much on Kellar’s side, noting the context in which Kellar proclaimed himself a racist.

While I’m not a Kellar fan, I seriously doubt that his words will change a thing in the SCV. The illegal immigrants are here to stay; so are the “angry white people.” Although I hear tell some of them have moved to Arkansas . . . ;-)
