February 1, 2010 – Daily Brief *

Maybe it was Kellargate, perhaps it was the mini-Frankenstorm… either way, I’m giving Jeff a much-deserved break from the Brief this week.
  • State of the Checkbook: -$1.6 trillion = new record set for federal deficit since WWII  REUTERS  The President is also calling for an end to NASA’s moon program NYTIMES
  • As the spotlight dims on the national healthcare stage, California’s Senate passed a measure to create a single-payer system funded by *SURPRISE* a new payroll tax. Don’t expect this one to go anywhere – yet  SFGATE
  • Dave Bossert asserts that illegal immigration is now the big CC campaign issue, saying “Frank Ferry is okay with illegal immigration and does not want the City do anything about it.”  Why? Because Cardinal Mahoney is his boss. WRB
  • Laurene Weste gives a full scale City update, including announcements of a Cross Valley Connector party and the second annual Earth Day celebration on April 17, this time at Newhall Park SCVMAG
  • City hosts a “Go Green” art contest – kids can choose one of three themes: bus, bus, or bus KHTS, CITYBRIEFS
  • The Signal’s Editorial Board thinks SCV businesses aren’t waiting for a Washington handout, they’re waiting for one from the EDC SIGNAL
  • Meanwhile, SFVBJ wants businesses within the City of LA to have that cozy feeling business owners get in Santa Clarita and Burbank.  Mr. Katz nailed it at his less-than-Boydstonesque CC address last week: notable parenthetical “except for that ‘proud to be a racist’ guy in Santa Clarita” (no kidding) SFVBJ (subscription)
  • Between the rhetoric out of SOTU, the big bank taxes, and lack of capital markets exposure — regional banks are sexy again.  Our own Bank of Santa Clarita is no exception with a 10% earnings lift in 2009.  SFVBJ (subscription)
  • SUSD Superintendent Judy Fish will attend a live webcast tomorrow, answering your questions on all things Bouquet, Emblem, West Creek—but you have to be an SCVMOM (can please someone ask if they can sub “Music Academy” for “Fine Arts Academy”?  ReaderMama, can I get a li’l love?)
  • SCV real estate slowly but surely stabilizing with a 2.7 month supply of homes.  New construction, the other X-factor in RE numbers, isn’t covered  SIGNAL
  • 6,500 will be released from state prisons over the coming year; here’s one to sleep on — there’s a 67% recidivism rate among newly released prisoners. SIGNAL covers the local angle.
  • A grim update on the Domestic Violence Shelter; moving to lower cost digs helped it weather the last budgetary storm, but next fiscal year looks worse.  Perhaps more notable is the drop off in services rendered SIGNAL
  • Hey Guys!  Let’s install red light cameras!  The cool kids in Santa Clarita are doing it! Says a Longview, WA LTE TDN
  • And in that mega tourist destination that is the AV, the Lancaster Evangelical follies continue JEFF WILSONDAILY NEWS, LA TIMES, NBC4 No word if Lancaster Mayor R. Rex Parris will enter the Masters College “Letter to Darwin” competition
  • Call me “The Wilson Cycle Foil”: as a die-hard petrolhead, I’ve been watching the Toyota recall woes for the past few months. 1 in 4 cars sold in CA are Toyotas.  So is it floormats? Gas pedals? ECU?  Do they have a real fix or is this optics?  Are you nervous to start your Camry? Dealers are getting calls ranging from “car’s in your lot, call me when it’s fixed” all the way to “what do I need to pay you to get to the front of the line?”  LATIMES Execs hit media hard this morning, denying a “cover up” and announcing a fix ABCNEWS, CTV Lawyers want a piece, too FREEP The sales freeze hits the showroom LATIMES
  • And while the world continues to digest the curiously named ‘iPad’, Amazon celebrates the success of the Kindle by raising revenue guidance 40%; this after Q4 profit topped 2008 by a whopping 71%.  Analysts say the Kindle is the #1 reader with Sony’s “a distant second.”  It’s also half the price of the forthcoming iPad.  Yup, monochrome rocks – for now.  INFOWEEK

ND, this SCV mom will be at work tomorrow at 10, so I can’t help you out on the webcast question. Maybe Phil Ellis can fill in for you?

On the subject of cars, I feel badly for Toyota. We’ve owned 3 Toyotas over the years, and they were all good cars. But I feel even sorrier for the people who lost lives or loved ones due to sticky gas pedals.

One car company’s extremity is another’s opportunity, though. Go Ford!

ND, I think you did an excellent job on the Daily Brief, but I was disappointed to see no mention of Pink’s performance at the Grammys last night, which was spectacular. If you missed it, catch it on YouTube:

Agreed! Pink kicks ass, and I too want to know why SUSD went w/’music’ instead of ‘fine arts’.

When they say ‘music’, are we talking instrumental (and what is the budget for that?)? Will they be hiring new teachers with training in musical arts, hiring musically trained teachers from within SUSD, or filling the school w/majority displaced teachers, plus a music teacher or two (or a combination of the above)?
