I wholeheartedly agree that the graffiti eradication budget should not be cut. While I have disagreement with the city on a few issues, I feel the effort to remove graffiti is outstanding. Having used the e-service system to report incidents many times, the graffiti is usually removed within about three days. When graffiti is removed quickly it tends to discourage repeat tags. When it is not removed quickly the whole quality of life of a city goes down.
Thanks to all on the Santa Clarita graffiti eradication team!!!!
Does anyone know about this “Full Rights for Immigrants Coalition?” (It’s the group whose representative spoke out against Kellar at the County Board of Supervisors meeting yesterday). They have a facebook page, and member Robert Gittelson owns a garment manufacturing business in LA, but that’s all I’ve found.
In any case, I am surprised that this story is still around in the state and even national media (well, blogosphere). It’s based on one remark from one man who represents a City that holds less than one-half of one-percent of the population of California.
IHeart, just to make an observational point, Kellar decided from the beginning to dig his heels in, just as he did with the income disclosure scandal two years ago. He’s surrounded by a bubble of people who adore him, not to mention his newfound activist friends. Because of this, he probably assumed that he was more than OK and it would all go away after the council meeting.
Thing is, people like Whitman and McKeon can’t afford to be linked with that sort of comment or that band of activists. The people defending Bob Kellar, to an outside observer look like no-names and/or extremists. The names Alan Ferdman, David Gauny or BGH don’t play outside of the Newhall Pass. To put it simply, he let other people do the talking for him, while his own comments weren’t especially persuasive.
Whitman, by giving him the public lashing that she did, gave the story a new and larger set of legs. I don’t know how and when this ends.
I am not looking forward to the next time the Minutemen carnival comes to town. I wonder if Gauny will show up.
Wow Mike, I’m sure the good folk of the SCV that stood up at council last week would love to be known as “no-names” when many of them are the who’s who of the SCV. Some may even have influence outside the SCV and many are sought after for political endorsements in and out of our valley. If Whitman and McKeon want to do a CYA act that is their perogative.
navigator, that’s my point…
“to an outside observer look like no-names”
In this bubble, they are very important, elsewhere they mean squat. Bob can get by here because they matter here, but the same doesn’t hold true, necessarily, for Buck and certain not for Meg Whitman.
Mike: as one of the no names mentioned, thanks I think, I would pose some questions.
Why is Meg Whitman not talking about what she would or would not do to address the illegal immigration issue and its economic impacts on California taxpayers? I do not know much about Ms. Whitman but I think distancing herself from Bob Kellar politically regarding this issue is a mistake. I know I will not vote for her.
We should all be questioning why our elected representatives have failed to take action to protect the rights of all those people in this country legally and struggling to meet their own financial obligations. Why are people permitted, and indeed encouraged, to break the law? Who are these people from “Full Rights for Immigrants Coalition”? What are their funding sources, and who are their supporters? Do they propose we all simply ignore enacted laws? Do we also ignore other laws, which we might disagree with? Our government has failed us miserably in enforcing immigration laws. People are angry and frustrated.
Guys like these, who continue to advocate for the rights of those who have entered the United States of America illegally, should be arrested for aiding and abetting in the commission of a crime. It is against USA law to cross this country’s borders and enter our sovereign nation without permission and in direct violation of the immigration laws this country has established. In many other countries, trespassers are stopped at the border by whatever means necessary. Read about what happens at México’s border with Guatemala. While you are at it, read about the “civil rights” afforded those folks attempting to cross into México or other countries without permission, or the “civil rights” of anyone arrested in México or any of these other countries sending us their citizens to support.
We are a nation of laws; they must be respected and upheld. I want to hear the position of each elected official and candidate for public office regarding illegal immigration so I can determine who I want representing me. Those without a backbone to defend the Constitution or the laws of the United States of America will not get my vote!
ND: You and I are obviously not going to agree on this issue but your ridiculous smart aleck remarks are not appreciated.
BGH, that was a great joke. Comedy gold.
Actually, I do find humor in bringing up the issue of Mexico/Mexicans and “drinking the water,” alluding to another, albeit often-true, stereotype.
Then again, we have perchlorate and chlorides in OUR water, something we should warn all those crossing the border into the SCV about.
I also agree about demanding all politicians state their positions on immigration, amnesty, sanctions for employers, etc.
We pay locally but the Feds refuse to do their part in enforcement. Yet another unfinded mandate that is making our local budget problems worse.
ND: Are the Cemex Mine, One Valley One Vision, and many other issues, which have a direct impact on the residents of Santa Clarita not a City Council issue? Anything, I repeat anything, which has an impact on the residents of the Santa Clarita Valley, not just within city limits, such as the illegal immigration problem is an issue for the City Council. Some things they can influence more, some less but they are still issues they can address. One thing they could do today is draft a letter to all of our State and Federal officials expressing their concern on the impact to local funding this issue is having and raising the concerns the residents of the City of Santa Clarita have expressed regarding this matter. It may not have any impact but at least they would be letting Buck et al know that they hear us loud and clear.
Mike: I do not see anything humorous in any of my above posts so please enlighten me.
Even Bob Kellar will tell you he has been unable to do anything at all to combat illegal immigration. Unless he’s going to run for federal office that will not change.
ND, keep the smart aleck remarks coming!
ND: You view it as wasted time. I view as bringing attention to this issue and getting the dialogue going. I agree our City Council has many issues of pressing concern. I also agree we have other elected officials. Just because you view one official as responsible for city items and another for federal items, that doesn’t mean the other elected representatives should not know what is of concern to the people they represent. One way or another everything, health care, immigration, education, etc boils down to the local level. How it affects you and me personally. Where you and I appear to disagree is who, what, where, and when our elected officials should do something regarding illegal immigration. I do not believe every problem is attributable to illegal aliens but I think it is one issue that needs to be resolved once and for all. If for no other reason that we can then move on to other important issues instead of bringing it all back up every couple of years. We would not be having a conversation about Bob’s comments, racism, illegal immigration, how much it costs the California economy, whether the City Council should take a position, etc if the issue had already been dealt with successfully. Getting the discussion under way and moving towards real solutions is better than ignoring the huge gorilla in the room.
Unless these politicians start talking about realistic policy and legislative solutions, it is nothing more than the rantings of demogoguery. It’s Kellar’s ‘playing to the masses’ around the topic of illegal immigration that prevents any progress. Kellar has not moved the ball forward one inch on seriously addressing the problem, and in fact, he has made it tougher. If you really want these problems addressed, you have to tone down the rhetoric and the drama.
