Oh Hell No

Pop Quiz: One of the objects in the picture does not belong. Can you tell which one?

If you need help answering this question, click the picture

Is it:

  1. The late Model Chevy Suburban adorned with Lakers Championship decals on the rear window?
  2. The white Honda Accord on the left?
  3. The motorcycle rider?

If you answered 3, congratulations! You are one of the (apparent) few who can recognize the international symbol for a pedal bicycle-only lane.

This shot comes courtesy to me of an SCVTalk reader who says that this guy was flying up Rockwell Canyon road on his superbike in the clearly marked bicycle lane that Santa Clarita cyclists have fought for years to get.

What is it with these sport bike riders in town? I’ve already told you about how they enjoy ripping through Bouquet Canyon at 100+ mph. YouTube is littered with videos of sport bike stunters crashing and breaking bones. And sadly, we’ve come to expect that if you’re a 20 something male in Santa Clarita on a sport bike, you stand a good chance of winning a Darwin Award.

And now this. Now they’re invading my five feet of pavement. This must stop. Only one strangely-dressed human on a two-wheeled transport device is allowed in the bike lane, and that’s a pedal bicyclist! Moron! Get out of my lane!

What a jerk! These types envision themselves being in some sort of race at every green light. You can almost see him playing the role of an announcer in that helmet of his. DORK.

    Also, GO LAKERS!

Agreed this guy should be ticketed and his license suspended.

But read your own words, and swap the bike/car and get some idea of the rage that drivers can feel if they get stuck behind a thoughtless group of side-by-side bike riders on a narrow road.

    I’m just sayin’…

I could be realy snide and state that the object in the photo that doesn’t belong is the bike lane itself, but then Jeff might ban me for life!

Sorry to get a bit more serious folks but I’ve seen the results of a couple of motorcycle accidents over the last couple of years. Many of these floks on their ‘rice-rockets’ are insane. Take a look at the traffic fatalities stats below. Automobile accidents per mile driven are going down yearly since 1994. Motorcycle fatalities have more than doubled since 1994. (This is shown in the large number of motorcycle fatalities in the SCV in the last few years). Bicycle fatalities are relatively flat at 700 – 800 per year nationwide. We don’t need motorcycle knuckleheads like this guy trying to take a bicyclist out with him so he can increase the stats for bicyclers.

    BTW Jeff:

It looks like this is the year me and Mrs. Farley are going to finally buy bicycles. It’s been a while since I gave my 1960s style Schwinn Varsity to Saint Vincent DePaul. We may be seeing you out on the streets/trails. Your bicycle enthusiasm has been influential on me. So I swear we are going to buy bikes this year – I swear I swear I swear.

Hope I can follow through on that……

I heard something like the last 15 traffic fatalities in the City have all been drivers of motorcycles.

In some defense of bikers (the motorized type) – while this moron very likely was riding in the bicycle lane and deserves to have a padlock latched securely through the heat expansion holes in his brake discs, not all fatalities are due to stunters and in-town speedsters. Even the single vehicle motorcycle accidents are frequently caused by car drivers who are no more interested in motorized two-wheelers than they are in pedal powered ones. I dumped my old bike on the 405 in the carpool lane in what would qualify as a single vehicle accident that was entirely due to the SUV that felt it was so urgent to enter at the dotted line that she swerved over in front of me going 15 mph slower without even looking. Unfortunately the stunters live through their accidents more often than us responsible riders because the muscle relaxants they’re on allow them to hit the ground and roll with it rather than try to fight it, much the same as when drunk drivers walk away from accidents that kill their victims.

And yep, I do hate that those jack@$$es give responsible riders a bad name…
