February 12, 2010 – Daily Brief

So Long SCV: I'll be in the desert this weekend for the annual Tour de Palm Springs ride! Have a great weekend

  • The Sulphur Springs school district is considering bumping up class sizes to 30 students in order to deal with $3.5 million in cuts coming its way. To do that, the District may cut up to 40 teachers SIGNAL
  • Kellar, Gauny and Runner confirmed at February 27 rally in front of the Civic Center. For some reason the Signal is calling it a “tea party,” but its focus is clearly on illegal immigration though they told the Signal they’re going to protest taxes too. The Signal notes that it’s being organized by out-of-town activists from Fillmore, our little neighbor down the 126. Gauny says his speech will be a surprise SIGNAL
  • In Santa Clarita, Ronald Reagan reverence runs deep, so deep that we have one state senator (Runner) proposing to make Reagan’s birthday a state recognized day, another who wants to erect a statue of Reagan in the Capitol (Strickland) and a city council person (Ender) who thinks a Reagan-as-a-western-rancher-type statue would be just swell in Old Town Newhall SIGNAL
  • Vatican begins search for replacement of Cardinal Roger Mahoney, who has announced he will step down next year. Word is the Vatican will select a Latino Archbishop as 75% of the Los Angeles Archdiocese -the largest in the nation- is Latino LA TIMES
  • Community invited to give input on search for new Hart Superintendent SIGNAL
  • Congressman Buck McKeon, Senator Barbara Boxer and Supervisor Mike Antonovich are expected to attend the opening of the Cross Valley Connector on March 27, KHTS says
  • Castaic Lake Water Agency laughs at all your puny plumbing problems as it contemplates building giant $10 million, 1.5 mile long, 54″ inch water pipe SIGNAL
  • What’s it like to have your home swamped by runoff from a burned mountain? Pretty terrible as the LA Times panoramic photos reveal (ht:NickelDime) LA TIMES
  • Olympics start today- isn’t it great that they’ll be in our time zone for once? NY TIMES has a good page
  • Futurists predict the emergence of the Urban Small Vehicle (the USV instead of the SUV), smaller, battery-powered cars that mesh together to form large energy storage networks, and broadcast traffic and data to transportation planners. “iCars” in other words AMERICAN PROSPECT
  • Wendy Langhans deftly adapts human roundabouts or traffic circles to the issue of wildlife corridors here in Santa Clarita “In this case, humans are the incoming traffic.  We need to find a way to yield the right of way to the animals already there,” she writes. KHTS
  • Castaic man sentenced to 41 months in prison for embezzling $830,000 from Lockheed FEderal Credit Union, where he was vice president SIGNAL
  • SCV Moms Blog users contemplate which part they would play if there was a TV show called “Real Housewives of the SCV.” lolz SCVMOMSBLOG
  • Noted: In my post yesterday about the awesomeness that is 21st Century Newhall, Gail Ortiz chided me for saying that Oversized Novelty scissors used in ribbon cuttings would make an appearance at the groundbreaking for the new library. In fact, the novelty scissors will be kept in its special climate controlled City Hall vault and the Novelty Golden Shovel will be the star of the March groundbreaking. Those pining for an appearance of the Oversized Novelty Scissors can probably expect to see it at the Cross Valley Connector opening. Thanks Gail, what would I do without you? :)
  • What better way to kick off Valentine’s Day/President’s Day weekend than by reading I Heart’s February column in INSIDE SCV in which we learn that Santa Clarita isn’t necessarily the best place for lovers, but there’s still reason to Heart SCV.

How much is 54″ pipe these days?
    Somebody is making bank.

  2. Need for Involved Citizenry says:

The best part is that this is really expansion to pave the way for more development but guess what – the current ratepayers will be footing the bill for it – not the developers! Just keep voting to reelect the current CLWA board!

Cathy Colley should run next time!

I am not sure whether to dread or anticipate the “surprise” speech by David Gauny.

  4. Spineflower2 says:

Yup, NLF is making buck. Current ratepayers are footing the bill for a pipe enlargment that is to serve the new NewhalL Ranch development.

This is clearly against public policy in making current ratepayers pay for new development. But in this valley, the develoeprs own the water companies (literally true in some cases like Val Water), and their board members through campaign contributions (CLWA, SCWC). So who is surprised at this latest outrage?

  5. Berta González-Harper says:

Jeff saying “Gail Ortiz chided me for saying that Oversized Novelty scissors used in ribbon cuttings would make an appearance at the groundbreaking…” is a bit of an over statement. She corrected your misinformation but she did not chide you, be fair.

BGH, seriously, lighten up, get a sense of humor. He was being tounge-in-cheek.

  7. Andrea says:

Thanks for the shout-out, Jeff. A Real Housewives of SCV would probably be more than any network could handle. :)

  8. Jackie says:

LOL. It’s always funny to see what discussions make the guys notice. Of course it’s not politics, education or healthcare… you see the “Real Housewives” discussion. :-) Just wait til our girls’ even tonight – you’ll be in your glory!

  9. Berta González-Harper says:

Mike: If Jeff can go on and on about an apostrophe, using the word “chide” inappropriately is worthy of mention too. I could “spin it” that Jeff dislikes City Staff, is accusing Gail of being rude to him, or he is offending anyone who enjoys ribbon cutting ceremonies. For that matter, maybe make the case he is against the Cross Valley Connector itself. Ah, you say he did not mean that. I believe you, but rely on context, motivation, and what I know about the person to make that determination.

See, I do have a sense of humor!

  10. Todd says:

    BGH, really?

Chide: : to voice disapproval to : reproach in a usually mild and constructive manner.

Thats pretty much EXACTLY what Gail did… reproached in a mild and constructive manner.

    Dictionary. Use one.

    Todd says:
    “BGH, really?
Chide: : to voice disapproval to : reproach in a usually mild and constructive manner.”

Yes,really. She did not voice disapproval or reproach, mildly or otherwise. She CORRECTED his erroneous information. There was no rebuke or displeasure evidenced in her tone at all.

So Todd, do you simply want to argue or what?

  12. Scott Ervin says:

I’m just gonna go ahead and chide you folks for gettin inta it over the proper use of the word, “chide.”

    Oh brutha . .

Wendy’s renamed their standard baked potato the BGH on account of the chides and sour cream.

  14. lvogel says:

How about some of the women who plan on attending the ‘tea party’/'minuteMEN’ rally being used in the ‘SCV Real Housewives’ reality show? Oh wait, they’re not from the SCV are they? No matter, those that are watching/reading news coverage and videos won’t know the difference! They will only know what they see, read and HEAR in the media about the SCV.

  15. Berta González-Harper says:

    Yippee, I get a triple play…

Scott: Appropriate use of the word chide!

Mike: At least your insults are more creative!

ND: Here is something we actually agree on.

  16. Berta González-Harper says:

Ivogel: I plan on attending as an OBSERVER. I would not presume to represent Santa Clarita women, as we are a very diverse group. If I am asked my personal opinion, I will say that Santa Clarita is a wonderful city that values and welcomes persons of all cultural and ethnic backgrounds, races, religious creeds, etc WHO ARE HERE LEGALLY.
When we have our exchanges after that rally, I want to speak from firsthand observation and not interpretation/ speculation of a YouTube clip. Want to go too?

  18. lvogel says:

Oh thanks for the ‘invitation’ BGH, but fortunately I will be out of town that weekend. Even if I were, I would not like to attend. These types of Rally’s can get ugly real fast, so be careful ‘observing’.

  19. Sarah Poof says:

    Regarding today’s picture:

    Oh Hell No.

    Is it:

    1) The car that’s following this group of nimwits waiting for a break in the double-yellow line so it can pass legally?

    2) That not one of these cyclists is looking back to check for traffic from behind?

    3) The arrogance that cars and motorcycles should follow the rules of the road but bicycles are exempt?

    4) All of the above?

    Consider yourself chided, Jeff! ;-)

  24. Berta González-Harper says:

    ND: Funny!!!!

Just in Sane: Since Cash the misogynist and I are arch enemies (read back a couple of months), your supposition is actually hilarious.
Cash has not been posting because we appear to agree on the illegal immigration topic, which takes the fun out of it for him. He is around…
