While Bristol Farms prepares to close its Valencia store before seeing its second birthday, Redbox is going gangbusters in the SCV. The now ubuiquitous $1 DVD rental company has successfully blanketed the valley with their namesake kiosks.
Claritans from Westridge to Canyon Country, Castaic to Newhall and all points in-between have access to these newfangled boxes, which are a breeze to use but have a somewhat limited library of content. At least for now… Hollywood studios have recently warmed to the concept after initially rebuffing the cut-rate movie rental concept. Today, Warner Brothers announced a partnership with Redbox, leaving only Fox and Universal outside the tent.
I found myself doing the el-cheapo this past weekend at a Redbox near me, along with 5 other douchebags guys with the same idea. Waiting 10 minutes for a copy of “He’s Just Not That Into You” was a bit of V-Day buzzkill, but it’s easy on the wallet.
Now if Redbox could only do something about that line…

I just noticed today that Hollywood Video store on Via Princessa and Sierra Hwy is closing.
About the lines…..maybe they’ll install double machines! They have them in Vegas and Utah (probably elsewhere, too LOL, but I’ve noticed them there). I just hope they start placing them in better locations. I hate to use the one at Copperhill Albertsons because it is VERY in the way of shoppers trying to leave w/their carts.
Anyways. We <3 Redbox. I wish they stocked series (like Big Love, Sex and the City). We still Netflix for our TV show and instant streaming purposes, but Netflix rocks for a spur of the moment new release rental.
Redbox rocks. I was introduced to them in Nevada a couple of years ago. I have been using the one at CVS (formerly Longs) in Granery Square for over a year now.
The Redbox I use has doubles. But since I am a blue-ray guy I don’t use redbox unless I am really not into what is on TV. When Redbox gets blue-ray I will be all over it
John,
Some SCV kiosks do indeed have some Blu-Ray titles.
Now that WB has signed on, expect more.
I heard usenet is now open 24 hours.
Walmart and Target are trying to put the squeeze on Redbox.

@mike
Besides being illegal…. Really for a frickin dollar?
I’ve got 15Mbit download Uverse speed and cannot download a movie faster than it takes for me to walk to the supermarket (which is just across the street) and pay the dollar for a Redbox dvd.
I do Netflix streaming. I’m horrible about returning things and I can’t stand hard-coded Russian subtitles.
Netflix bluray and streaming ftw.
