February 17, 2010 – Daily Brief

  • Tsunami of new foreclosures expected in 2010 as some 4 million homeowners are 90 days or more delinquent on their mortgage payments. 2.4 million are expected to lose their homes, even though there’s a federal program now to reduce foreclosures. The hardest hit states will be California, Florida and Nevada LA TIMES
  • Locally, the economy may have leveled out with unemployment holding at 7.4% in December and housing projects slowed, but not stopped. The City’s Jason Crawford says filming in the City of Santa Clarita brought $22 million into the local economy in 2009, an increase of 14% SIGNAL
  • 10 years to the day after 18 year old Marcus Lellan drove over 100 mph on Soledad, ultimately causing a crash that killed three teens and one man, the Signal catches up with the parents of two of the boys, brothers Tim and Daniel Renolds. SIGNAL. Also, InsideSCV had a feature article at the 5 year anniversary of the crash. I’m trying to find out what happened to Marcus Lellan- he was sentenced to 8 years in prison, so where is he at now? At least one site says Lellan -originally from Denmark- was a victim of “xenophobia” and police misconduct.
  • A 47 year old dentist and Stevenson Ranch resident was driving his Lamborghini through Bouquet Canyon on Sunday when he lost control of the vehicle at 40mph, slammed into a tree and died. KHTS
  • SCV International charter school wants to nearly double its enrollment and add a 9th grade. Some 1000 students may eventually attend the school in Castaic. SIGNAL
  • In other school news, the Hart District is looking at spending $10,000 to facilitate communication about Castaic High School KHTS
  • A Southwest airplane en-route to Burbank from Las Vegas had to make an emergency maneuver on Saturday in order to avoid colliding with a smaller airplane, the LA TIMES says. I see Southwest planes over the SCV several times a day
  • Local non profit performance groups get assistance from the City so they can afford to put on productions at the COC PAC SIGNAL
  • Buck McKeon to beat up on American Recovery and Reinvestment Act one year after it was signed into law. He’ll be at the AV Equipment Rental site on Railroad Avenue in Newhall today at 1:45pm. AV Equipment’s workforce is half the size it was when the Recovery act passed he says in his press release
  • RUMOR ALERT: Trader Joes is collecting zip codes of shoppers again, according to one faithful reader. When queried as to why, the TJ’s clerk said they were looking to expand in either Newhall or Stevenson Ranch. They last collected zip codes when they were pondering a move to their current location
  • Speaking of McKeon, the Moms over at SCVMOMSBLOG live-talked about the Buck McKeon conference this weekend and both said that while the breakout sessions were really compelling and useful, McKeon was a tad “patronizing” toward the women. They also touch on the Jesus Christ invocation. Good chat as always from SCVMOMSBLOG
  • Castaic Lake Water Agency adopts a wait ‘n see approach to Governor’s big water infrastructure plan SIGNAL
  • WalMart competes with Whole Foods for local and/or organic produce? Yes, and then some a writer for ATLANTIC finds out

I *think* Leland was deported after serving his sentence.

I’ve been hearing TJ’s is eying the former Linens & Things.

    mike:

That is correct. He was deported to Denmark after serving his sentence. Though he had lived in the US for most of his life, the family had never become citizens. A green card is almost always revoked after the conviction for a serious crime.

As a bizarre footnote to this story, several years later his mother was implicated and taken into custody by the FBI in a money laundering scheme that allegedly involved the Russian mob. I don’t know the disposition of that.

The Lamborghini story is very strange. Something is not adding up. Are there any pictures of the damaged vehicle?

I think when I have my next conference for SCV women, I’ll invoke Cassandra in an invocation to see what sort of response I’ll get.

I thought Ralphs had a non-compete agreement for that center???? It would be great for the west side folks, but I doubt that’s the location they would move to. I’d be more likely to believe they’re looking at ghost town that is Valencia Marketplace. P.S., I noticed Circut City has some paperwork in the window that lists the leasee as ‘Ross Stores’ (or something along those lines). Might a Ross be going in over there? Does Ross have other branded stores?

Foreclosures – I think it will be worse than even that article predicts. It fails to consider the homeowners that will strategically default when property values go down another 25% this year.

Marcus Lellan – wasn’t he deported as part of his sentence? I did a quick search on Facebook and he’s not there LOL (at least, not public).

Hey! If Buck is going to be at AV Rental will he make sure the illegal aliens are shuffled away before he gets there or since he turned away from Kellar will he embrace them with open arms? Just asking.

    Teenagers and Cars

I do wonder about choices, especially parents who buy their teenagers cars like Mustangs, Acuras and BMWs. Do they really think these brand new drivers are equipped to handle these types of cars?

Where are all those kids who came on TITTS with their “We love you Marcus! bullcrap?

I wonder if they still feel the same way now that they have kids of their own?

Funny how the other driver who was killed is forgotten. No, not funny!

I sure hope TJ’s will open up another store. I have stopped shopping there as frequently as I used to since their move and I have talked to others in my area (Valencia) who say the same thing. The drive and the parking lot are never good experiences over there.

Petz, I am in agreement about the guy driving the Lamborghini. No mention of him wearing a seat belt. And it seems questionable that he would be driving only 40 mph (15 mph below the speed limit?) and lose control.

  11. navigator says:

I find it questionable that he was driving a Lambourghini at 40 MPH anywhere! We had passed that spot maybe 15 minutes before he crashed and the road was clear at that time. Maybe we’ll find out that he had a medical problem. Who knows.

Let’s not forget the EXTREMELY bad Marcus love poetry that found its way on to TITTS. I blame the comp instructors for making these young ladies think they are all channeling Elizabeth Barrett Browning.

As for TJs, I haven’t stepped foot in their new store so they won’t be getting my zip code. I stop at the one in the valley as it is more convenient on my way home.

Good to hear that the Hart district is flush with money to facilitate spending it on ‘communication’ Can you hear me now Hart? STOP SPENDING MONEY ON STUPID STUFF.

  14. Valencia Joe says:

I too found the story about the accident involving the Lamborghini as a bit strange. Doesn’t make sense.

As for Trader Joe’s possibly coming to Stevenson Ranch, I also remember reading stories about Ralphs having a non-compete clause in their lease. Perhaps TJ will be located at the old Levitz store at the Marketplace. Wasn’t that right next to the old Circuit City location?
