Jeff, your bias against Castaic is showing.

    Your words:
“Burglar wanted in Castaic: the Sheriff’s station posts a creepy picture of the suspect looking into a home.”

    The actual story:
“Detectives from the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station Burglary and Theft team are investigating a residential burglary which occurred in the afternoon on Thursday, February 25, 2010, in the 27000 block of Catala Avenue, Saugus.”

    ND,

You seem to be up on the local school district news. Any truth to the rumor that SUSD is going to full day kindergarten for next year?

    Money,

If so, they should’ve announced it already. My kids attend the Sulphur Springs Dist. My son’s k class was the last part time. K is now full-time, but the school dist. gave the parents notice about 5 or6 months notice prior to the start of the school year…best bet is to just call the school dist. directly…

Jonathan asked the hard questions of two incumbents but,did NOT get answers!

Then he asked three SC City Council candidates the hard questions and received his answers!

Thank you Jonathan for letting the SC City voters know just how NOT transparent at least two of our current City Council members are(one being the Mayor).

This election WILL determine the future of Santa Clarita with OVOV on the horizon!

    Character Counts for City Council!

Jeff, you aren’t the first to assume the worst about Castaic! ;-)

No further news about that car theft bust… I was wondering what organized crime ring was behind this!

It’s a bit too far north to be called Castaic by anyone except the Town Councils who, know the legal boundaries for their elections. The area governed by the Town Council is actually about twice the square miles of the City!

THis is one reason why the City can cite better police response times… one crime near Gorman and it’s of course a long drive, but that gets averages in by the City folks to strike fear that any non-City area like Castaic or West Ranch is a distant outpost run by gunslingers anbd outlaws!

    Re: Roger Gitlin

That’s EXACTLY what we’ve been talking about! One can not be for amnesty and also NOT want a bunch of screaming yahoos in town, because they can’t show their faces in their hometown.

A little surprised, but happy that George Runner stuck to his story that he was verbally abused and misled in the invitation to the rally.

The most humbling part of the story is that when you pick the random “man on the street” they have no idea about any of this stuff going on. The scary think is that one in 20 of this uninformed people will actually diligently vote.

  7. Berta González-Harper says:

In reference to Roger Gitlin’s letter to the Signal, I think he is correct that these rallies are no longer serving their intended purpose. As I have already mentioned, the problem is that the message of illegal immigration gets lost amongst the ego driven comments and insults from some of the speakers. No one mentioned the comments made by scvtalk poster Bill Reynolds, the Native American man, or the Hispanic woman (sorry, forgot their names) who as I recall all did a very credible job of discussing the ISSUE without insults, etc. I do hope a more moderate group with better leaders emerges to unify those of us who are not extremists and do not “hate” anyone based upon their race, ethnic background, etc but simply want our laws enforced and a controlled legal immigration process to prevail.
I will say again that George Runner knew this rally was not a Tea Party and that he knew it addressed illegal immigration. Aside from the placards behind him, the marchers with bullhorns blaring, I spoke with him at least 10 minutes before the rally started regarding the topic of illegal immigration. The truth is most likely he got “cold feet” and decided to leave and Mr. Jorge (funny-George in Spanish) did not show any more class than George Runner did. At least he should be honest as to why he decided to leave. Mr. Jorge could have simply said Mr. Runner decided to leave instead of cursing and insulting him. Attendees could have filled in the blanks for themselves.
The one thing the rallies have accomplished (yes I know you did not want Santa Clarita to get this kind of attention), is get the topic on the table for discussion. Perhaps instead of just letting this contentious issue continue simmering below the surface we will unite as a city to pressure all of our elected officials to do everything legally within their means to enforce our immigration laws. We can do more, even on a local level. The racist label nonsense needs to stop. Yes, there are real racists on both sides of this issue but I chose to channel my energy into addressing the problems created by uncontrolled illegal immigration.
Illegal immigration is supposedly down, although no one has accurate numbers of how many were even here to begin with, due to our weak economy but we cannot rely on continuing job losses for our legal residents as the only means for securing our borders. God willing, the economy will improve.

  8. Carrie says:

BGH – “but we cannot rely on continuing job losses for our legal residents”

Yeah right, like any legal resident wants to do the jobs these people do for the money they accept.

Who is it who hires day laborers? People who don’t want to pay the prevailing wage for a construction worker.

Who hires an illegal to take care of their kids or clean their house? It’s citizens who don’t want to take care of their kids and clean their own house.

These folks should be arrested at the same time the illegals are.

The only thing to protest is the lack of enforcement of existing laws. We don’t need a damn rally, we need politicians who will FORCE the cops to do their job.

  10. Bill Reynolds says:

Thank you Berta. And Brian, I agree 100%. Despite all the acrimony at least the rally brought this issue to the attention of our politicians. And we are seeing their positions, or lack thereof. Lets see what happens next.

As a speaker that day I must say that I too was dismayed with comments of a few – especially my fellow Viet Nam Vet. As for the anonymous commentors here who attended the rally, I noticed that none of you attempted to publicly speak your mind.

Is there video of Bill Reynolds speaking? I can’t seem to find it.

We don’t agree on some things, but I have tremendous respect for him and am more likely to have my mind changed by him than by most others on here. He deserves that.

  12. Berta González-Harper says:

    Bill: you are welcome.

Vince: Not that I have seen, not controversial, no headlines.

Carrie: You fail to recognize that those low paying jobs would be paying more if it were not for all of the illegal’s willing to work for less than anyone else, but I question even that. The one illegal quoted in the Signal said he used to make $500 dollars per week, I assume without paying taxes. $500 dollars per week after taxes is about the equivalent of $900 before taxes are withheld. Many, particularly in this economy, would work for that. He says he only makes $250 per week now, again without paying taxes. He most likely has children born here who are entitled to free medical, school breakfast and lunch, food stamps, and subsidized housing so his tax free $250 goes a lot further than the legal resident entitled to zero freebies since her/his income is traceable and they are paying their share of the tax burden.
Before there were so many illegal’s here, those jobs were performed by people like your father who came as a bracero as I recall you mentioning, other newly arrived legal immigrants, or those with less education and job skills. That segment of our population is the most impacted out of work demographic within our population. Whatever jobs are available within the United States of America should go to those here legally. If there are really jobs which cannot be filled after you put every able bodied person to work (you know welfare to work programs), then you open up more visas for those occupations needing additional workers. That is how it was before this entitlement mentality became acceptable and it worked just fine.
Sorry, Carrie but you and I are not going to agree on this issue.

  13. Olenka says:

Vince: Here is Reynolds video. http://vimeo.com/9850596

What the rally lacked on Saturday was organization and consistency. Speakers were all over the place. Each had his or her own idea of what the issue was. Each had his or her own little agenda. Some speakers just ranted.

Yes, I realize the rally was an anti-illegal immigration rally, and that is what united everyone in the first place.

But everyone agreed on different levels, thus producing a hodgepodge of rhetoric. There was no focus. What is the point of a rally where there is no focus?

There isn’t one. And now everyone is realizing it, thus concluding any future rallies as pointless.

I don’t think rallies are pointless. They just have to be well organized.

Oh, and Bill: “As for the anonymous commentors here who attended the rally, I noticed that none of you attempted to publicly speak your mind.”

You honestly think they would let anyone with opposing views have a shot at speaking? The rally organizers paid for the permit, they brought all of the gear, etc. I doubt they would let anyone have a voice. And i don’t blame them. I wouldn’t have.

Very well done, Bill! I can tell you were nervous, but you did great. Funny how the human brain works – you saw so much death and were within its grasp on a daily basis back in Vietnam, but then something as “safe” as speaking to that crowd made you nervous.

Oh, and I swear, when I closed my eyes when you started chanting “The Status Quo has gotta go,” I thought I was listening to Jessie Jackson!

I agree that our country needs to reinstate the draft – once that happens, we will be out of Iraq, etc so fast, our heads will spin.

Laws need to be enforced, that is true. But you talk to any local officer and they will tell you that these are Federal Laws. I am so sick and tired of every level of government throwing up their hands and claiming that it isn’t their problem.

I admire Gauny & Kellar who have stepped up and made it our issue. Maybe if more local government put pressure on our Feds, something would be done.

C’mon Bill! Anyone who would have spoken up in opposition at the rally would’ve been called rude, out of line, mouthy, communists, etc. Seems you need a reason to criticize the “other side”, taking shine away from the mishandling of the event. No worky. It was Jorge’s circus, we just came to pet the animals.

In any case, at the next “rally” I demand a hand decorated stage made of pure gold, a carafe of the finest cafe mocha, and twelve gyrating midgets doing Paul Lynde impressions. Or else I won’t give a speech. Git her done.

  22. Bill Reynolds says:

So Vince, do you really think liberals would squeal about draftees serving on our borders? I would argue that type duty would not compare to wartime combat, ie., Iraq or Afghanistan. By the way, our time limit was 5 minutes so I was nervous about the length of my speech, plus talking about June 19th always tears me up. I will be placing my speech on youtube with a few relevant photos soon.

    Olenka: No one asked questions.

P.S. Who the heck has even heard of vimeo?

Don’t be such a douche, Bill. As others have stated, it was not a Q&A session with the local think tank up on that stage. Questions were answered, as Mike stated. Watch the videos. Regardless, it was a rally of such schizophrenic and unorganized proportions that the only question I had was: Who’s running this sinking ship and when is it over?

Hey guys, I was right there in the mix and I heard no questions posed to any speakers; having said that I did turn my back on a couple of them. Give me an example of a “spoken” question.

It may have been disjointed, but I still maintain that both rallies brought attention of the issue to our politicians. By the way, check KHTS: Illegal street food vendors are getting the boot.

    Gangfung… I wouldn’t be surprised.

  28. Vince Hans says:

Bill – I’m just saying that if the draft were re-instated, I think that most Americans with draft-age children would suddenly scream and holler to get our military out of Iraq, etc. Especially the rich and powerful who have influence on our govt. Liberals AND Conservatives.

Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  29. Bill Reynolds says:

I get your point, VH… but my notion was to place draftees on our borders leaving volunteers to serve overseas. My comment the other day, was “sometimes I think we should”…. Not that I think a draft would ever happen. Also, I’m certain a little military training would do a great many young folks a lot of good.

Money, didn’t read the other replies so you might already have your answer. But yes many SUSD are going full day. The locations depend on the available space, or so I’ve been told, and there is a list of schools w/full day.

BTW, not sure if you have a kid already in SUSD, but ‘full day’ for lower graders is 8(ish)-2(ish), upper grades are 8-3(ish).
