  1. Spineflower2 says:

Interesting that Ferry disparages SCOPE lawsuits while at the same time touting the new Canyon Country library. It was a lawsuit by SCOPE forcing developers to pay library mitigation fees that funded projects like that new library.

But Ferry was never one to let facts get in the way of a good debate…

  2. Annette says:

Will the facts in the Ferry email ever see the light of day in The Mighty Signal?

Personally, I do not think TMS has a editor that will commit political suicide by printing the facts.

  3. townbeet says:

LA County Health cracking: Jeff, mentioning the LA gourmet trucks and the Saugus swap meet in the same sentence is simply unacceptable :P

  4. Petz says:

Petz based his count on the public archive maintained by the LA Times. As of today this includes military from Saugus,Santa Clarita, Newhall, Canyon Country, and presumably-Stevenson Ranch.

The local Blue Star Mothers groups may have a larger geographic jurisdiction than these well defined areas and they may well count military deaths outside of the theater of operations.

The Blue Star Mothers provide much needed comfort to wives, mothers and families of deceased military and deserve our support.

  5. Jeff says:

I’m looking for a way to contact them but the email address I have for them bounced.

  6. Vince Hans says:

Re: SCV soldiers. I was in Covina and they have banners hanging from the street lights on the main drag – each one names a local soldier. I think it’s really cool.

  7. IHeartSCV says:

Ferry’s sole guiding philosophy is “bigger is better,” so of course his email vilifies Gauny and Boydston for opposing the HMNMH medical office buildings and for implied ties to SCOPE.

Good point on the library, Spine–perhaps the only reason he was OK with SCOPE’s leadership in securing library funding was because it meant something got built.

  8. Annette says:

I think everyone agrees, that we feel the pain and loss of the fallen heroes that protect our freedom.

May the families find some comfort in knowing that we truly do feel their pain and loss.

HOwever, words will never fill their void!

  9. Berta González-Harper says:

On the WRB article, some of Bossert’s comments I agree with, others not as usual. For instance, why shouldn’t Frank Ferry take credit for some of the genuine accomplishments the City has produced during his twelve years on the Council? I do not consider the so-called hospital expansion an accomplishment however, more like an embarrassment.
I do take exception to Bossert and others constantly mentioning David Gauny and TimBen Boydston in the same breath as though they are one candidate. These two men are very different people, with different philosophies and personalities, who identify and address issues in a very different manner. While I recognize that many of you support both candidates, some of us do not. I would appreciate people not joining these two candidates at the hip but rather allowing them to stand or fall on their own individual merits. You do not link Harrison Katz and Johnny Pride for instance. Why Gauny and Boydston? Two different candidates…

  10. Andy says:

We’re not going to get the Google internet setup if the city keeps saying that it’s 1 Gigabyte per second instead of 1 gigabit per second, which is around 100MB.

  11. blazingmonk says:

Brittanicus is spam I have got the same cut and copy message on Blazingmonk.com

  12. Berta González-Harper says:

Brittanicus I do not think you are saying anything I have not said before. As I continue to say, there is more that can be done even on the local level but there must be the will and political courage to advocate for the legal residents/citizens.
I am a life long registered Democrat but find myself very much at odds with elected Democrats on this issue. Take for instance Senator Barbara Boxer. She supports amnesty and after 20+ years in office has done virtually nothing regarding this issue even with an amnesty provision. Or people like Gil Cedillo and others serving in California Public Office. I am actually thinking of changing party to “decline to state” since I am sick of both parties inertia and bickering.
This is not a Democrat or Republican issue but rather and American issue. All elected officials at whatever level of government should be doing everything legally within their power, even if it is something as simple as proclaiming their CITY IS NOT A SANCTUARY CITY. Elected officials at all levels of government have simply stopped listening to the people they supposedly represent. After all, presumably illegal aliens are not eligible to vote. Our tax collectors could be looking into the tax-exempt status of churches, Catholic and others, who violate the law by providing sanctuary to LAW BREAKERS. I wonder if they would give me sanctuary if I were selling meth or rock cocaine to feed my family? Does Cardinal Mahoney and these other clerics now serve as the Supreme Court and get to interpret immigration law as it suits them?
Steve Poizner actually ran an ad regarding taxes and illegal aliens yesterday that I heard about from TV station KMEX. KMEX is warning Spanish speaking people about Poizner’s anti immigrant proposals, they never use the word ILLEGAL.
I am closely following all of the candidates and incumbents of whatever party and at whatever level to see who is for the rule of law as it exists in this country, and who is for more of the same “nothing can be done” rhetoric. Plenty can be done…

  13. blazingmonk says:

Spineflower – “It was a lawsuit by SCOPE forcing developers to pay library mitigation fees that funded projects like that new library.”

What evidence do you have of this? I have it on good authurity this isn’t the case.

  14. blazingmonk says:

Berta you talking to a bot.

  15. Berta González-Harper says:

Blazing: Hum…well I know I have spoken to a whole bunch of butts in my lifetime but this is the first time I am talking with a bot. At least that I know of… Thanks for the info though.

  16. Timothy Myers says:

    blazingmonk:

Spineflower is correct. The requirement for library fees was part of the disposition of a case that SCOPE brought against Newhall Land for the Westridge Tract back in the 90′s.

One can go back to even an older case on school mitigation fees that involved the Hart District as one of the plaintiffs.

  17. blazingmonk says:

    So no evidence?

  18. CC says:

Berta, I couldn’t agree with you more.

  19. CC says:

It is public record Monk if you are so inclined to do your homework.

  20. blazingmonk says:

    Working on it now…

  21. Berta González-Harper says:

Hi CC. Thanks, but on which issue(s) do you agree with me? Differentiating between candidates David Gauny and TimBen Boydston, the illegal alien issue, or butts vs. bots?

  22. Jim Farley says:

While TimBen Boydston and David Gauny are indeed not running as a ticket, it is not unreasonable to discuss supporting both at the same time. They are the only non-incumbents with a reasonable chance to win. They have more in common with each other when it comes to serving on the council than they have different. One commonality is that they are closer to the people in terms of support. The incumbents are closer to the interests (developers) outside the city. Whatever differnces anyone percieves between the two, we need both of them and none of the incumbents sitting on our city council.

  23. Berta González-Harper says:

Jim: with all due respect, I disagree with you on this issue and I suspect we will continue to disagree. Since there is a tenuous TBB/BGH truce at the moment, I will simply restate these are two very different candidates who should be evaluated on their individual merits or lack thereof.

  24. Val says:

Frank sounds so desperate! Bet he’s wishing he still had that $12 grand he gave to Laurie Ender. Those who believe that crime doesn’t pay, never watched OUR City Council in action! Don’t worry, Frank, G&L is stuffing McKeon’s PAC for you and the rest of our incumbent skunks. I’m sure you will have plenty from G&L in time for your ugly hit pieces to appear right before the absentee ballots get to our mailboxes. As IF Frank doesn’t know this!

  25. Jim Farley says:

BGH: I never sadi they should not be evaluated on their individual merits. I feel they are individually well qualified, and that both need to be sitting on our council. It’s really a shame that you would choose to let Ferry Weste, and McClean to remain on the council because of some percieved snub by TimBen. This election should transcend that.

  26. Berta González-Harper says:

Jim said “It’s really a shame that you would choose to let Ferry Weste, and McClean to remain on the council because of some percieved snub by TimBen. This election should transcend that.”
You are making these assumptions based on what? As to where, if anywhere, my other two votes will go, not decided yet.
For the record, it is not because of “some percieved snub by TimBen” I am not supporting TBB.

  27. Jim Farley says:

Apologies if I misinterpret your reason for not voting for him.

Here’s the bottom line, not casting a vote for TimBen and instead casting it for another non-incumbent besides Gauny, is effectively a vote for an incumbent. That’s just the lay of the land in this election.

  28. Pauline Harte says:

Some info regarding SCOPE’s part in getting library funding:

    Schools and Environmentalists
    Contact SCOPE by clicking HERE

    ——————————————————————————–

…..In 1992, Santa Clarita Org. for Planning and the Environment, joined by the Sierra Club, challenged Newhall Land’s Westridge project (now being built on the west side of I-5) for exactly those reasons. We were worried about school over-crowding in spite of the County’s Development Monitoring System that was supposed to require adequate classroom space for new development. We were worried about the increasing air pollution levels and we were worried about the Valley Oaks Savannah (Significant Ecological Area 64) and its treasure trove of beautiful old native oaks.

A year later, in a landmark decision, the Court ordered the developer back to the drawing board to investigate the issues of school and library funding. The result was the formation of a library assessment district to fund new books and facilities as development is approved, and the tripling of school impact fees. It was a huge win for our community and for the County as a whole…..

Berta you talking to a bot.

LOL – that is the funniest thing i’ve ever read on this board!

  30. Vince Hans says:

Berta – re: I do take exception to Bossert and others constantly mentioning David Gauny and TimBen Boydston in the same breath as though they are one candidate.

I completely understand what you’re saying – and understand why you think that. But I have to agree with the others.

  31. Berta González-Harper says:

Jim: apology accepted but you are still making assumptions.
I have multiple options to explore. For instance, I could simply bullet vote for David. I could vote for David and one, or two of the incumbents. I could vote for David, Harrison, and Henry. I could vote for David, Johnny Pride (ahem), and a write in candidate of my choice. I could vote for David and one or two write in candidates. I could vote for David and myself (if I wanted some additional enemies). Alternatively, any other combination I might choose. The point is you are assuming what I may or may not do when I myself have not decided any vote other than David Gauny. I have however also already made some decisions regarding those I will not vote for after careful deliberation. I have not yet heard several candidates speak so reserve opinion regarding those candidates. You know what they say about ASSUME…

  32. Pauline Harte says:

OK, I was trying not to advertise my ignorance by asking what a bot is, so I didn’t ask no matter how loud my curious side was screaming at me to ask, but now I must broadcast how ignorant I am reading that a bot is the funniest thing ever on this board and I enjoy a good laugh as much as the next guy. Or gal. So…..what’s a bot?

  33. townbeet says:

    bot=geekspeak for robot :)

  34. Annette says:

Internet bots, also known as web robots, WWW robots or simply BOTS, are software applications that run automated tasks over the Internet. Typically, bots perform tasks that are both simple and structurally repetitive, at a much higher rate than would be possible for a human alone.
    Got It? LOL

  35. ReaderMama says:

Pauline, you know those “robo” calls you get before an election? Well “bots” are kinda the same deal, except they send out e-mail and blog posts or perform other computer related tasks.

  36. Annette says:

Oh, I must post that my post was copied from…
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_bot

Don’t want the powers that be accusing me of plagiarism of a bot
    :/

  37. Pauline Harte says:

Thanks everyone! Yeah, that was funny.

  38. Berta González-Harper says:

You know though this does bring up another question. Since “Publius” had posted before and no one mentioned it was a bot and in fact others “talked” with Publius and this post “sounds” like a person posting, how would anyone know they were talking to a bot if Blazing had not said something?

  39. mike says:

    Common sense?

  40. Jboyyyyyy says:

Where did the politico section of the talkers forum go?

  41. Vince Hans says:

berta – i meant no disrespect in laughing at your expense…would have been as funny no matter who, in that i had no idea it was a bot

  42. IHeartSCV says:

Berta, you have invoked the famous Turing Test…how do we know if we’re talking to an artificially intelligent other or a human?

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turing_test

  43. Berta González-Harper says:

Mike: you would not recognize common sense if it bit you on the …

IHeart: wow, I had no idea. This Turing test is interesting stuff. I may have been talking to AL, ALICE, ELIZA, or ELBOT. Makes me feel better to know that genius scientists, who can actually ask questions and interact with these bots, frequently cannot tell which is human which machine. Thanks for the information.

Vince: I took no offense at your glee. I had no idea when I responded it was a robot. It’s like being punked…but hey at least it did not call me nasty names and insult me. Or was that the clue?

  44. Blazingmonk says:

how do you spot a bot? You must be like Glenn Beck and assume everything is a bot until proven otherwise.

    Be nice to mike, Berta.

  45. Berta González-Harper says:

Why? He has never been nice to me…

  46. SCV Guy says:

    On Google;
I watched the video on the City website from Google and the instructions I heard were to go to the Google Projects website and submit you nomination for your City, yet the City leaves this out of their instructions. Instead, like the progressive big government or City Managers Office has become they instruct the community to upload a 20 second video to give the City ideas that they can not think of on their own. I went to the City’s 4share. Website and no one has upload a single video.

I want this as much as the next Internet geek, but the City hasn’t a clue how to work with Google and unless they learn quickly we won’t have a chance.

And why is the City using 4share, do they not find any if the local technology companies worth working with?

Nice shopping local and THiNK-ing City of Santa Clarita.

  47. Blazingmonk says:

And th city should do what instead?

  48. Vince Hans says:

Note to self – develop a nasty name calling bot :)

  49. Berta González-Harper says:

Vince: naughty, naughty but you do just fine on your own…

  50. Steve says:

“Congressman McKeon doubts that the famous RAND Corporation can create an objective study on the effects of a repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”

The RAND corp is a non partisan research institution. There are ‘think tanks’ that are partisan but no reason to question the integrity of a study just because it might go against what he wants it to show. ;)
