DAMN! People of SCV can be whiny. Your kid just ain’t that special. Get over the cancelled promotion ceremonies would ya?
Interesting choices from Diane Trautman (whom I have a great deal of respect).
All the canyons have been budding up in the past couple of weeks. A trip up to Leona Valley will show you blooming fruit trees–a real treat. Just watch for motorcyclists!
The Canyon Country Library is only a few years old and already in need of renovation? Who did we get to build it, the same folks that built Valencia High?
CC:
The redoing it to put in the really cool self check out kiosks that they just installed in the Valencia branch. Also, any public building subject to heavy use (think hotels and retail) needs to have carpet replaced and be repainted about once every five years to look good, and once every ten years at the absolute latest.
The Canyon Country Library is also expanding into the area that was formerly leased by COC. That is why it will be closed for several months.
Congratulations, ND! I thought you had a delightful combination of warm sentimentality and cold technology in your essay.
On Trautman:
I hope this column was not “held” by the Signal editorial board, since it is coming about seven days too late to have ANY impact on the election.
So it isn’t just me. My dishwasher has been unusable for the last month. I’ve never seen water so hard. The article was interesting, but does anyone know how to run a cycle with some vinegar?
You could google vinegar and dishwasher to get the mix, but we use a cup of CLR and a jackhammer!
We’ve noticed the same problem with the dishwasher. I was blaming the dishwasher detergent we use because they’ve changed their name and, I imagined, their formula as well. I sprayed all the dishes with distilled vinegar and scrubbed. Then filled up the rinse aid cup in the dishwasher and switched to Cascade. Much better. Although my tea does look a bit cloudy these days.
I would be concerned about using CLR — there are a lot of warnings on that stuff. Vinegar is safer.
I’ve been in appliance repair for 30+ years and know a bit about this as i’ve retired several dishwashers myself. Brians suggestion on CLR is good. If the deposits are really bad it may be too late.
The best thing to do is prevention. The deposits are actually calcium carbonate. That is what makes water ‘hard’. Installing a water softening system reduces calcium carbonate. You can’t own your own that regenerates and puts salt into the drain water though. We use Culligan. There maybe other alternatives I’m not aware of. You can use a product like Jet Dry as well to reduce spots on dishes. Hope this helps.
Thanks Jim, much appreciated.
Looking forward to ND’s coverage. Bummed I couldn’t convince him to do it in drag, considering that I didn’t get a spot in the coach. But go ND!
And on Towsley: I’ve been hiking it a lot lately, it’s perfect right now! Anyone in the SCV who has never experienced it in Spring should do so ASAP.
I’m going to take the road less traveled on this one and agree that 8th Grade promotion ceremonies should be preserved.
Anything that rewards and recognizes individual achievement is worthwhile in my book. They are more award ceremonies than anything else.
I would add that high school graduations are less than dignified events. Out-of-town guests are always appalled by the blow horns, bouncing beach balls (and blow up dolls)and general unrest that often accompany any high school graduation in Santa Clarita.
Junior high promotion ceremonies aren’t like their high school counterparts. They are typically respectful and focused.
Yes, there will always be some parents and students that take it over-the-top. I don’t condone indulgence.
As difficult as junior high is for many young students, the ceremonies are much more than just a feel-good moment. For my children, I would say they were defining watershed moments that I wouldn’t trade for the world.
I, for one, would like to see junior high promotion ceremonies continued. Where’s the collection cup?
Are these the same tightwad Republicans who would see their fellow citizens die due to a lack of health insurance?
You want us to spring for a party for your kid? Are you nuts!!??
Brian, promotion ceremony is not a party.
My children are out of the Hart District, YET I would gladly contribute $$$ to let other students have the benefit of experiencing achievement.
and to end NickleDime’s spot on comment……and this is Awesometown afterall!
Interesting that Trautman a Dem, endorses three Rep.
I wouldn’t classify anything Diane Trautman says or does as interesting.
“Anything that rewards and recognizes individual achievement is worthwhile in my book.”
This generation of children is so coddled and “recognized” that most can’t tie their shoes without expecting a reward for it.
These days a decent career path requires a lifetime of learning, completing 8th grade is simply not significant when you consider the years of learning still ahead.
One of the most important lessons is probably, “Life is full of disappointments, get over it.”
As an MRCA volunteer, I’ll be leading a wildflower hike at Towsley Canyon on Saturday, from 1-3. We meet at the front gate. I scoped out the route on Monday – the ceanothus is at it’s peak.
Ooops! Meant to say “at its peak”.
What is the route you recommend? A couple of weeks ago there was only a light flush of bloom, mostly lupine and a few scraggly poppies. Where is the “show” today?
I hiked up Wiley, as far as the oil seep. If you want to see some photos, go to the FB page “90 Days of Santa Clarita Valley Wildflowers”. The Red Maid and Fiesta Flower were taken there on Monday.

When I “graduated” from junior high, we had an assembly in the multi-use room at the end of the school day and we (mostly) dressed nice. Short and sweet. I had no idea our district did a whole big ceremony for that! Sheesh.
