- Looks like Supervisor Antonovich has scored a victory by persuading the MTA to spend some of its 30/10 transit money on freeway widening projects in Santa Clarita and other parts of his district. The Signal says the deal requires federal approval, but if it goes through both the 14 and 5 could be widened. The Feds would pick up the tab and the County would pay them back over 30 years through Measure R funds, which was approved by voters in 2008. Elegant plan. SIGNAL

- So the SCV Mayors Prayer Breakfast Keynote Speaker has been revealed. He is Rick Green, a 39 year old Texas lawyer, an evangelical leader of something called the “Wall Builders,” a Tea Party activist, a former Texas legislator, and a recently defeated candidate for the Texas Supreme Court. If that sounds good to you, remember, tickets are only $25 for the Mayors Prayer Breakfast and I hear there’s still gobs of them availableSCV MAYORS PRAYER BREAKFAST

- I may not understand the significance of this, but my foodie friends are OFF THE HOOK excited about the Los Angeles BBQ Festival hosting its yearly get together in Santa Clarita’s own Central Park in September. The website for the fest says the event will feature “authentic ‘cue from Texas, Kansas City and Chicago in addition to the best BBQ pitmasters from LA.” General admission is only $10 and there will be beer! OMG BBQ fest here? I’m so there!!!!
Fiddler…on the ROOF? I don’t see a connection. Then again, I don’t go to many plays. It’s much cheaper to be in them!
Just an FYI: On the LA BBQ Fest website, the event information listed is for 2009.
Hopefully it’ll come back to the SCV again this year though!
I think that’s just a website error. If you click the Buy Tickets link, it takes you to a page selling tickets for the May 2009 event at the Santa Monica Pier.
What’s more, September 11 & 12 are a Saturday and Sunday which makes sense for Central Park.
We’re working to confirm it is in fact coming to the SCV this year.
Yeah, it looks like a lot of that site still has last year’s info. Like WC said, “More to come soon”
Re: Dockweiler\Lyons, the Placerita homeowners should have a reason to be concerned about Casden. See link for a preview:

Jeff would like his Westwood development (yes, it has a Trader Joe’s) but I’m not sure something like density wise it would really fit at the mouth of Placerita. I’ll try to upload some photo’s of it if your site will let me.

Another article. If it’s good for me, why can’t I just do it – the hell with the neighbors!
Jeff,
The PCPOA is against the at-grade crossing EIR only because it does not include the REAL reason for its being. There is no real reason for the crossing other than to provide a way in and out for the Casden, et al, project. To show the PUC a traffic study that does not include the eventual traffic from that project is subtrifuge at best.
I love how we have to tiptoe around Placerita homeowners like they are our benevolent overlords. It isn’t enough that they get a special standards district, they now get a sphere of influence.
Benevolent overlords? They call themselves the Placerita Power Posse. They get veto power over virtually any project they want.
More like gangsters and mafia if you ask me.
I agree with your assessment, I’m just describing the deference we are expected to give. I’m rooting for Casden like nobody’s business.
Maybe you’d like to bankroll him to express your support. I’m sure these folks were glad they did!

Being a serious BBQ-er myself I was instantly excited to see this news. A look at the site has tempered that quite a bit. What I would love to see would be a Kansas City Barbecue Society sanctioned event anywhere in the greater LA area, but especially in the SCV. There was one at the Autry museum in Griffith Park a couple of years ago that was impossible to get to due to the number of attendees. This event looks more like a way for restaurants to show off their foods.
TLC had a reality show recently called ‘Pit Masters’. I loved seeing the characters in competition barbecue. That’s the kind of event I’d love to see with local teams like ‘Slap Yo Daddy’ from the San Gabriel Valley.
Jim, doesn’t look like any competition element here. Half and half mix of out of towners and LA-area places, but all are serving. I also went to the thing at the Autry museum and it was a big letdown – just one vendor serving and an hour line for it.
But hey, we should start a team. I know another guy or two that does it for real.
My wife and myself never made it to the Autry event. We showed up late and did not want to commit to the long walk that would have been involved from outside the park. From your report it looks like we didn’t miss much.
I’ve been so busy through the winter with work and other things but I’m feeling the need to do a bunch of back ribs soon. I think my neighbors are missing that great hickory smoke smell emanating from our back yard.
A team would be great. Are there any real competitions locally you know of? I can’t find anything local on the web.
There is a CA BBQ Association of some sort. I’m hoping to find some minor league kind of thing to learn the ropes of the competition game. Seems all these guys have massive rigs & RVs. One day…
