Newhall Shooting and great reporting

We don’t get crime reporting like this usually in our local media, which is all too quick to just repeat what the Sheriff’s station says:

About 11:30 p.m., sheriff’s deputies got a call about the shooting.

Edwards, among the first to see the aftermath, said the man was shot at least twice in the arm and three times in the chest and stomach. She tied the towel around his arm to try and stop the bleeding.

She reassured the 49-year-old man. Another bystander translated her words into Spanish and kept pressure on his stomach until paramedics arrived.

On Monday afternoon, the street still showed evidence of the previous night’s violence.

Some students walking home from Placerita Jr. High School stared and gasped as they passed a dried puddle of blood on the sidewalk between Walnut Street and Chestnut Street.

A shred of blood-soaked gauze, tattered ribbons of yellow police tape and an opened neck brace littered the front of the home where the shooting took place.

A white picket fence nearby was peppered with what appeared to be several bullet holes.

A witness statement, vivid imagery & a great description of the crime scene. I can almost feel the emotion and fear of the residents in that area. This is what crime reporting should be.

More please.

And to the Tea Party/Minutemen who lobbied to get Jonathan Randles fired last winter? Go fly a kite.

PS: Check out the ridiculous comments on the Signal story.

No one lobbied to get Clark Kent aka Jonathan Randles fired from The Signal. He just writes what he is told.

JR bought the bull that this did not appear to be a “gang related” shooting , so I guess we are supposed to assume that there is a homicidal maniac loose in the SCV madly shooting innocents at point blank on the sidewalks.

Ft. Hood was not a terrorist attack either….And so it goes.

One questions the forthrightness of Sgt. Darren Harris if this is the best he can do. Don’t expect a follow up story from The Signal either.

It must be very tiring to be Petz.

Everything is a conspiracy. Everyone is out to get him. He’s one of a handful of true patriots carrying the burden of saving this community and this nation.

And he’s going to do it one non-constructive flame post at a time on SCVTalk.

He alone knows the truth: If a Spanish-speaking resident is shot in Newhall, it is undoubtedly a gang-related crime – not a crime of passion or a robbery or anything else of the like.

Whites, on the other hand, kill one another for more sensible reasons, like flying planes into IRS buildings 9/11-style in protest of Obama’s tax cuts. They even get fan pages on Facebook.

You get on with your bad self, Petz. Keep carrying the White Man’s Burden.

  2. Petz says:

My recollection is that Roger Gitlin thought JR did a fair job of reporting and Petz does not believe that Roger is Ole Glory. An anonymous blog is not someone. Give us the name of someone who actively worked to get Randles fired.

Randles did not research the Answerla.org crowd that caused so much civic disruption in this town. He focused on Gitlin, Gauny, Kellar Frank Jorge and preacher Yancy. The reporting was not complete and far from balanced.

I don’t know which mob to be more afraid of, the one that carries guns and shoots citizens down in cold blood… or the lynch mob that wants to label every tragedy as an illegal immigration issue before there is any evidence to support the theory. The signal comments are almost astounding at how quickly they make those leaps. How quickly people leap at politicizing everything and painting it as a liberal or a conservative issue rather than a HUMAN issue.

Have we lost our humanity? Are we really so quick to look for a chance to say “told you so” that we don’t even stop long enough to acknowledge the actual situation without draping it in political hyperbole? It’s almost as though these venomous people are grateful for a situation like this so they can utilize it for its political might. Just sad.

It’s the “us versus them” mentality that (sadly) won’t go away… not any time soon at least.

What is disturbing to me is that we are all really part of “Us” yet there are so many who try to get Us to buy into this us vs them mentality. As I have had a chance to travel to different countries and meet different people I have been more amazed and drawn in by our similarities as human beings rather than repelled by our differences based on skin color, border location and political affiliation.

I think that was the point Petz was trying to make. Try stopping long enough to acknowledge the situation.

I actually wasn’t referring to Petz in any way. I was specifically referencing the reader comments on the Signal article only. Sorry if that wasn’t clear.

I’ll elaborate further to help out Jeff (But not the one…) on his post. Here are some of the insane comments posted on TMS website beneath the Randles article to which Jeff (BNTOTRTB) is referring to:

          “befree:
          April 27, 2010 – 08:31 AM
Thank you neighborhood liberal for letting this human garbage run around in our society”

          What does that even mean?

          “truthseeker:
          April 27, 2010 – 01:10 PM
More gang-bangers (most likely ILLEGALS) causing pain and suffering to law-abiding citizens. Thanks mayor for all your “great” work “revitalizing” Newhall. The way to really revitalize Santa Clarita is to start enforcing ALL our laws and stop protecting those who constantly break our laws.”

Once more an uninformed moron making racist generalizations and then somehow blaming the efforts of the city to revitalize? Me confused!

          “conservative:
          April 27, 2010 – 05:00 PM
Flourchild, taylorconsulting,& clott let me explain. Conservatives want the laws enforced, all of them. We are about rules, accountability and personal responsibility. Liberals know nothing of these things. Civil rights and poeples “feelings” are placed above all else in the liberal mindset.”

          All I can say is…CONSERVATIVE PUL-LEASE!

Somehow a crime that hasn’t even been completely investigated has already been found guilty of liberal…er…somethingorother, gang-related activity (and/or probably illegal since hispanics were involved), and more liberal non-rule following. Oh yeah, and somehow the downtown Newhall Revitalization has something to do with it as well.

This local article has nothing to do with politics, illegal immigration, gang activity or anything else. It is a well written article about an unfortunate crime which took place in our community. How about we let the professionals do their job and determine how it happened before we make it yet another unrelated talking point? And I’m only addressing the crazies in TMS commentary section and not anyone commenting here. After all, we’re ALL sane…aren’t we? :)

Imagine. People so quick to make judgements without actual proof or evidence . . or an arrest.

At least they could wait until someone is arrested and tried, or better yet, if DNA evidence is presented . . . you know . . . like when Johnny Pride was arrested, tried and convicted based on evidence . . including DNA evidence . . . Oh wait . . they never did do that . . . did they?

    Just sayin . . .

JR is a nice young reporter doing his job, and from this story, doing a pretty credible job.

Natalie over there at TMS is also a good reporter and writer.

I’ve met and talked with them both and although they’re out of J schools in Missouri and UNLV fairly recently, I would give them a break. What people may not understand is that their stories are subject to editing by others, and it is the others where the problem is.
