The SCV Sheriff’s office is reporting the two inmates that escaped early this morning have been found and apprehended.
Both inmate escapees have been apprehended near Hasley Canyon Road and Commerce Center Drive, Castaic.
A concerned resident called the Santa Clarita Sheriff’s Station to report that two male Hispanics had asked him for clothing. Deputies from the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station immediately responded to the area and began searching.
A short time later both escapees were located hiding in nearby trash dumpster storage area. Their jail jumpsuits were located in the dumpster.
Kudos to the concerned resident, Sheriffs, supplemental law enforcement and City for their coordination and communication with this incident.
Now… can we get a post-mortem on how the escape happened, and what is going to be done to prevent future escapes? If it was a laundry truck or the kitchen (if memory serves, the methods used on previous escapes), someone has some serious ‘splainin to do.
UPDATE:
Local ABC7 is reporting more details on the timing and an escape scenario for the pair:
“They were nearing the end of their trial, and apparently it wasn’t looking good for their case, and they were expecting — anticipating, if you will — a guilty verdict,” said L.A. County Sheriff’s Department Spokesman Steve Whitmore. “And connected to that guilty verdict, some severe jail time.”
Deputies believe the suspects planned the escape. They are suspected of leaving from a kitchen loading dock area.
“Two inmates were on a work detail at one of our kitchen docks. It’s a secure area, but trucks come and go. About 1:05 they were on a work detail, and then we officially noticed them to be missing at 3:15 when we did our wristband count,” said Whitmore.

Well, if they were caught in a dumpster (just like in the movies), maybe they used some ruse from the movies to escape too.
- Tunneling through wall covered by pinup
- Bedsheets strung from windows
- Removed metal grate from under cell sink, ran out to roof
- Stomped on guard’s feet and ran
I’ve been in NCCF. The security there is no joke. It looked like a supermax to me. Skinny windows and locked doors everywhere.
They must have been on a work detail or something.
“I’ve been in NCCF.”
What did they lock you up for?
I hope they enjoyed some Longhorn’s Barbecue before their apprehension. You don’t get Q that good on the inside.
Well, first all I’m so glad my daughter school (at Hasley and Commerce) was so diligent with security today. Seems there was good reason! I was shocked there wasn’t a police presence at either her school or the nearby CSD school (LiveOak?). We drove around the neighborhood thinking we’d see someone and didn’t see a single police car in the area (but plenty elsewhere).
At any rate, we saw all the excitement between the Old Road and Magic Mountain this afternoon. It reminded me of little boys playing cops and robbers. Cops flying around all giddy with the thrill of the hunt. We figured they had good reason to believe they were on the trail of the ‘bad guys’.
They did have a police car parked at the middle school. I was there at 9:30 and again at 1:30. I’m surprised they didn’t have one at Live Oak too.
I think it’s crazy that they were still in town. I’ve lived here 20 years and I really never been scared when there’s a jail break. I always assumed they just take off and try to get as far away from the area as they can.
We actually weren’t going to drop our daughter off at school. She’s at SCVi, which is in the retail center there at Hasley and Commerce. When we saw there were no officers at her school we went driving through the neighborhood trying to feel out the situation. Suprised not to see an office at LiveOak either. We drove around for about 10 minutes and didn’t see anyone. Eventually we did decide to drop her off, but it definitely caught me by surprise that there wasn’t a police presence at either of the two VERY close elementary schools.
Whose to say they weren’t surgeons who were set up for murdering their wives by a one armed man.
This is the problem with “escaping” from Pitchess. Without a confederate on the outside to drive you away, the escapee only has two choices: Walk around suburbia with a small army looking for you, or go into the Angeles Forest and starve or die of thirst because as an urban criminal you don’t have any outdoor skills.
If they came over the border on foot, they probably have plenty of outdoor skills.
You’ll find the “how” on SCVTV’s Facebook page.
Has anyone inquired about the immigration status of these criminals?
According to Supervisor Antonovich’s office the escapees are illegal immigrants. Thusly, once they are convicted of the crime to which they are jailed for (assuming as such happens), they will be deported upon completion of their sentence.
Can you link to a press release?
There’s a press release link on this site in the April 29 daily briefing.
Since it appears these criminals are actually in the country illegally it stands to reason some people might be upset that we the taxpayers are footing the bill for their trial, incarceration and, it would appear, the man power to recapture them upon escaping. I’m just sayin…
