Coming soon to a bike path/paseo near you?

This device, called the Earthmine Quad, could be used on bicycle paths to make nifty “Street View” type views along the entire path. Neat huh?

It goes nicely with Google’s latest mobile “Maps” application. We already have the ability to navigate by bicycle on Google Maps webpage, but now it can be downloaded to your phone too. I’ve tried it out and it works pretty well. A screenshot is below:

Download the new maps app for your iPhone, Symbian, Android or Blackberry device for free and give it a shot next week for Bike to Work Week!

Google Maps + iPhone has really promoted me to use Public trans ALOT more in places like LA, San Fran, and even from SCV to Santa Monica. I wonder if this app will promote other people to start biking more.

OTHER people because i’m way too lazy. Still a cool piece of tech.

BTW you don’t get a download for the app on the iPhone you are just free to use the web-based version.

If it integrates with the Google mapping system, a collective data base could be made of spots where belligerent hobos hassle you for money or teenagers are cruising around on their motorized scooters.

If I saw that guy, I would look at the vaguely threatening smile, fleece vest, and array of cameras and think “What a creepster.” Armed with only the quadracycle he would simply be a dork, but all that menacing technology and his voyeuristic aims make him decidely creepy.

I would then try to stop the man-machine’s progress with the well-timed throwing of a stick into its wheels, thereby crippling the many-eyed monster. Or I could just push the beast on its side and stomp on everything–not a whole lot of security going on there.

Agreed. And there are more reasons to dread this creep. The company now admits that it collected data transmitted over wifi networks while taking their seemingly harmless “street view” pictures. Not much tho… only about 500gb worth of email transmissions and such!
