May 26, 2010 – Daily Brief

  • The Canyon Country mother who left her son in car seat on hot July day in 2008 plead guilty on child endangerment charges and was sentenced to a suspended prison sentence and four years of probation, the Signal says. Jack Winchester, a 23 month old, died of hyperthermia after being left in the car. His mother won’t serve any jail time. The family still lives in Canyon Country and has two other children SIGNAL
  • Yesterday’s City Council meeting was packed with agenda items and quite productive: the fee increases on some city services was approved and the sanitation rate issue was discussed. Read John B’s wrap-up of the sanitation issue; for all else, go to KHTS and I HEART SCV
  • Heroin-related arrests and calls have increased substantially in the last year, but that’s only from three calls in 2009 to 18 in 2010. That’s according to Cpt. Paul Becker, SCV Sheriff’s Station captain who told the City Council that meth is more of a problem in the SCV than heroin SIGNAL
  • Oh My God: John Boston is moving out of Santa Clarita. I’m not sure the SCV can exist as a concept without Boston; it’d be like filming Walker Texas Ranger in New York City or Chicago, like filming CSI in the 19th Century. But I see that he may move to another great California Santa: Santa Rosa SIGNAL
  • Second phase of “Think Santa Clarita” launched; this time the City is advertising in the business section of the LA Times, on KFI-AM 640 and on cable channels like CNN, Fox News, and MSBC SFVBJ (Subscription)
  • Chief planner Paul Brotzman has “quietly slipped into semi-retirement” and will work with the City of Santa Clarita on a part-time and contract basis says The Signal. Brotzman was a favorite target of the anti-density/anti-growth brigade in recent years as he was once City Manager of West Hollywood, which, for some, portended a towering, high density and possibly color-coordinated future for our suburban bedroom community  SIGNAL
  • New County program offers residents low-interest loans for installing solar panels, efficient air conditioners and water heaters SIGNAL. But it’s only available for unincorporated areas, which is a pretty convenient bullet point to add to a flyer on the benefits of staying unincorporated KPCC
  • Two groups of 8th Grade students and parents have organized promotion ceremonies after Hart canceled the district-wide ceremonies earlier this year KHTS
  • Anti Buck McKeon blogger unearths 1992 quote from Buck saying that if he was elected to Congress, he would only serve 8-10 years, or a maximum of 12 BUCK STOPS NOW
  • Buck McKeon, standing athwart history and yelling “CAUTION!” ahead of this week’s near-certain and historic (but conditional) repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell KHTS
  • Democrats don’t like Schwarzenegger’s plans to cut, instead they want to tax CRV and oil companies and raise the vehicle license fee  to make up for the $20 billion budget deficit LA TIMES
  • Remember how thieves used to steal exhaust systems and catalytic converters off Toyota vehicles because the devices had precious metals inside? Well, that’s old hat: now they’re stealing the third row seat from large SUVs as one Santa Clarita woman recent discovered while her SUV was parked in Burbank BURBANK LEADER
  • SCV Tea Party leader says Congress’ financial reform package will allow the government to control your financial life and your day-t0-day transactions SCV TEA PARTY
  • Remember that Outside magazine article I linked to awhile ago about 13 year old Orange County resident Jordan Romero and his plans to climb Mount Everest? Well he did it last week. LA TIMES

    On John Boston moving away:

A watershed event in so many ways and instructive of so many trends in the greater culture. More reflections to come.

Down here in Beautiful Downtown Burbank, the third row seat thefts are rampant. Apparently its pretty easy access… pop a window, unlock and yank the seat all in seconds.

And they fetch a pretty good price on Ebay and Craigslist.

From what I understand, most of the snaggings happen at the Burbank mall… Surprised it hasn’t become a problem at places like VTC, or the Plaza at GV, or whatever that place in Stevenson Ranch is called… (where Walmart is). SUVs aplenty in those places!

Wow, John Boston leaving? What about his daughter? How can he move so far away from her? Reinventing oneself is fine. Moving away from your kid is another. He must be in dire straits financially. Couldn’t one of the rich Sand Canyonites buy his place and rent it back to him for a $1.00 a year?

You would know better than I, Tim. I must have had the wrong impression from some of the articles that he wrote — or my own preconceived notions.

I didn’t mean for it to come off as a “rip” but a lament at what difficult circumstances he must find himself in.

If I recall, John Boston’s family is up in Santa Rosa. Perhaps he just wants to be near them.
