One downside

to all the construction in Newhall is that we become dependent upon work crews to do their jobs right, like, I don’t know, ensuring heavy steal plates fit properly and don’t expose the hole underneath to motorist:

I rode up to Lyons & Orchard at about 5:05 pm today and found it odd to hear a steel plate moving up and down as vehicles drove over them. I looked over and saw two individuals watching the scene; car after car passing directly over the fallen plate. One of the bystanders was attempting to wave vehicles to the left, but a few drove directly over the hole anyway.

The bystanders said they had been there for 30 minutes and had called the Sheriff’s Station several times. I left around 5:30pm and still no one had showed up to put cones in front of the fallen plate. A woman parked her vehicle to the right of the plate in an effort to make sure vehicles steer clear, but she had to go, as did I (I had some ice cream in my bike panniers).

You should have seen the speed at which some drivers went over the plate. I felt for sure a few would crash into the opening, but no one had by the time I left.

I think I see what they did. They notched out the pavement in an effort to not have the plates raised above the grade. But what they failed to do was to have the proper width of plate to ensure that it didn’t do exactly that.

You can bet for damn sure that the contractor is going to get an earful in the morning.

Perhaps a word from the head cop to explain the lack pf response to public safety.

Give us a good excuse like lunch or shift change!

Custom practice is to place temporary asphalt around these steel plates to keep them in place. Sounds like that was what was done this morning. Should have been done before they left last night. Where’s the City at on this? Oops – want to make sure their business friendly! What we needed was for Don Fleming to go into that hole in his new Acura and then it would have gotten taken care of or coned off!

I called the city yesterday about it. They said it had already been reported to them and they were on their way out. Sounded like this construction is taking place at night adn that they had already made contact with the contractor.
