The City of Santa Clarita is going to Educate us on Immigration

A surprise “Immigration Education Special Meeting” announced today around 5:30pm. What’s on the agenda?

The City of Santa Clarita City Council will host a Special Meeting on Immigration Education on Monday, June 28 at 6:00 p.m. at the City’s Activities Center. The meeting will feature three separate presentations on the various complex issues relating to immigration. Following the presentations the public will have an opportunity to speak and the City Council will discuss the issue.

The three presentations to the City Council will address different aspects of the legalities of immigration. The Academic Presentation will feature a scholar presenting information on the Bracero Program, the Immigration Act of 1986, what has transpired since, and offer a review of current immigration dialogue at the national level.

The Law Enforcement Presentation will feature representatives from the Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) Agency and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department discussing their roles and authority as it relates to enforcing matters involving immigrants.

The City Attorney Presentation will provide an overview on the recent court ruling related to the City of Redondo Beach and its relevance to Santa Clarita.

Now let me tell you how this is really going to go (It is not, despite the title, about educating immigrants, apparently). There will be three lengthy PowerPoint slide shows explaining the complexities involved in illegal immigration, Congressional law making, the Federal code, state law, the US Supreme Court, local law enforcement, federalism and the failed efforts of other cities. It will be entirely reasonable and, for the normal, well-adjusted citizen of this city, persuasive.

And then the city will turn the microphone over to the crowd whereupon dozens of Gitlinites will condemn City staff, the LASD, and the City Council (except Bob Kellar) over illegal immigration in the SCV. Then, while loudly proclaiming they are not racists, they will employ every ugly stereotype about Latinos to prove and bolster their point. They will come with Arizona state flags and use code words like “invasion,” “clown houses” and “anchor babies.”

The spittle will fly and the microphone and dais will have to be wiped down occasionally. It’s possible Los Angeles media will show up and, predictably, broadcast the most virulent anti-immigrant sentiment just to make us all seem like a bunch of hicks. The Council, predictably, will cave into the mob and make bold pronouncements about “doing something”, thus totally making the entire “education” exercise a waste of time.

One wonders why the City is bothering doing this at all. They promised to hold a “study session,” but that was several months ago and the furor over illegal immigration has largely died down since the Council election ended. Who’s pushing this now, just weeks before the City Council goes into recess?

And what more can the City do anyway? Councilmembers already voted to support a set of ultra-right wing Congressional bills to please the Gitlinites, and it still hasn’t made them happy.

Jeff, according to your version of what will transpire I will be one of those “racists” sharing spittle.
I ask again, what part of illegal do you not understand? If you feel current immigration laws are wrong, then work to change them by petitioning Congress or something but in the meantime some of us would like them enforced and are still interested in this topic at whatever governmental level. Council members are simply being responsive to the concerns their constituents have expressed. A concern you obviously don’t share so they should just forget about it? Please…

Berta, can I accompany you as your DJ when you “comment” at this meeting? Like a live re-mix kinda thing. I can pitch shift your voice, throw some delay on it, etc. Smoke machines, lasers, you know the deal. Instant YouTube classic.

I don’t. I believe it is past time to discuss this issue, get all the issues on the table, and listen to all the potential solutions.

        Right on, Bertha.
        But we can’t stop there!

After Santa Clarita shows the nation how to solve the complicated problem of illegal immigration, we need to have council meetings to address global warming/climate change, energy, health care, Wall Street reform, the financial crisis in Greece, the long festering conflict betweek Greek Cypriots and Turk Cypriots, unemployment, the national debt, the Federal deficit, childhood obesity, teen pregnancy, the Iranian nuclear weapons program, North Korea, acne, and the AIDS crisis in Africa.

I believe it is past time to discuss these issues, get all the issues on the table, and listen to all the potential solutions. Only then can we finally rest as a community and let our collective hair down.

You can’t read names either huh.
You can make all the sarcastic comments you like but the fact remains that illegal immigration is a serious issue, which creates many problems for our country, state, county and city.

I wonder when the token liberal will stand up and explain that Arizona is not even on the border with Mexico?

I predict his name will be timmy

The Old Testament states that the people of God should not “vex the alien within their gates” and I am working very hard to make sure I have my story straight when I meet Jesus. Are you?

Tim! Don’t quote the Bible it only holds up if you have a little jesus inside your head telling you what the Bible really means, and not what it actually says!

Hey Jeff: I’m curious….. what term is appropriate to call women who come over to the states to have babies? Since the mother is illegal and the baby is legal there has to be some definition of that status correct? I’m just wondering what society should call that category. Ideas?
