Is there no end to the calamity in the SCV?
The LA Times says the Leona valley wildfire is threatening Department of Water & Power lines in the Palmdale area, and DWP has asked residents of the LA to conserve power. Edison says its lines could be affected by the fire too:
With wildfires near Palmdale threatening power lines, the L.A. Department of Water and Power asked residents Friday to reduce their energy usage wherever possible.
“We’re asking people to help care for our infrastructure while this fire is burning, as we wait for the potential threat to diminish,” said Brooks Baker, a spokesman for the agency.
Officials said the agency minimized power imports Friday on a transmission line that passes through the Leona Valley — where the Crown fire is burning — and began generating power at in-basin power plants to deliver energy to the city.
“At this time, the power system is functioning normally, and there are no fire-related outages,” Baker said.
[Updated at 1:29 p.m.: With multiple transmission and distribution lines threatened, Edison officials said 21 customers were without service in Lancaster, most of them located south of Elizabeth Lake Road.
Meanwhile, KHTS says the fire is spreading east and not west, which is reason for the SCV to breathe a sigh of relief until you read about the carpocalypse that happened before lunch on Interstate 5:
At approximately 11:15 a.m. there was a collision on the I-5 North nearing the Valencia Boulevard offramp. Five vehicles were involved, included two semi trucks.
A Toyota Corolla was completely destroyed in the accident. The driver, reportedly a male in his 60s, was cut out of the vehicle and transported to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital.
A driver of one of the semis believes he may have hit the Corolla. His truck then shuttled down the embankment.
As a result, for the third time in two weeks, the Newhall Pass is plugged up like your house’s galvanized steel plumbing with traffic backing up on I-5 all the way to the 170.
I hope that older gentlemen lives.
Stay safe out there!
It’s days like this that make my commute home from Santa Barbara feel really good.
Hey Jeff – come out and check out Isla Vista. It is bicycle heaven. They even have huge bike parking lots outside some of the student housing. Except for along the coast the bike lanes in Santa Barbara proper are awfully narrow and dangerous.
Jeff, it’s galvanized pipe, not corrugated.
I’m going to do something violent if I don’t get home in a reasonable amount of time.
Again, CHP, explain to me why you can’t get this road cleared in an hour?????
I use that off ramp all the time and cars either have to squeeze in between trucks to get to the exit or scramble to cut off a truck to make the exit. It is an accident waiting to happen.
Better in my mind to go up to Newhall Ranch Road because the semis are either pulled off at the scales or coming out slow and easy to pass.
P.S. It just did happen
And it will be how much worse when Newhall Ranch is built and another 20,000 commuters head south to work every morning?
Sheeeeeit. I thought we ran you out of this place.
Exactly. Paying attention, Jeff?
Hey man, where’s your precious county government putting the breaks on this? Why can’t the Castaic Town Council “advise” Newhall Ranch away?
I have a friend whose house was threatened by the fire. He took some great pictures if any one is interested:
