- Leona Valley fire burns 8,000 acres and at 5 percent containment this morning. A fire spokesman on the radio this morning said that fire resources would focus on protecting Edison and Department of Water and Power lines in the area. Meanwhile in the Acton area, dogs and other animals were evacuated during the fire yesterday. SIGNAL, LA TIMES, KHTS
- City Manager Ken Pulskamp getting lots of quotes in the media today about the City of Bell corruption. Pulskamp is “president of the administrators group” for the League of California Cities, and here’s what he’s told the media about Bell: “There really has been a violation of the public trust….The problem we ran into in Bell is that was done in a way that the public was not aware.” LA TIMES, ABC 7
- The scandal has spread to Bell’s City Attorney Edward Lee, who “approved [the] lavish compensation packages for top administrators.” Lee also worked as City Attorney for a number of other cities in the area, a fact which made the City of Downey uncomfortable in retaining him as their City Attorney so they let him go LA TIMES

- The City of Santa Clarita doesn’t like Habitat for Humanity’s plan to build 16 homes on a plot of land on Kansas Street in Newhall. HFH says it’s frustrated and says the city wants a “gold-plated” project. Paul Brotzman says the project may be too dense; “We suspect there would be a significant number of neighborhood complaints,” he told THE SIGNAL
- By the way, this isn’t the first time HFH has had trouble in Newhall. Back in 1995, the group organized volunteers (even children!) to rebuild a 75 year old man’s Newhall home after it was destroyed in the 1994 earthquake. John Novak’s home was rebuilt for free but when he moved into it, he complained that it wasn’t nice enough and lacked special touches.(ht:Mike D) LA TIMES ARCHIVE

- Two SCV mothers arrested: one left her 4 year old child at home unattended while she was working (“It’s a sad situation when someone needs to work and doesn’t have daycare,” said Lt. Brenda Cambra) and the other drove -to the Sheriff’s Station- with her 10 month old baby and 17 year old nephew while allegedly high on meth SIGNAL

- Chick-Fil-A now opened! Lady Ducayne stopped by to review and took some great photos of the Southern-inspired, cult-like house of chicken. And last night I even got to try it out. Chick-Fil-A goes all out with new locations, flying in a team of Grand Opening specialists to help kick things off. One of the guys was from Joplin, Missouri and was in the SCV for a week. Anyway, the food was really tasty and that lemonade- wow! LADY DUCAYNE
- Once honored for his newspaper columns, John Boston now gets honored for his blog posts too. Congrats John! Not quite a 40 under Forty, but it’s pretty swell I guess WRB

Brotzman finally sees the light.
Our City council often claims they work for very little money. This may be very true, but can someone tell us what the councils total pay package cost the taxpayers. I have heard 17,000/yr salary dicussed, but I have never heard the other benefits, ie. pension etc., mentioned. There has to be a reason that I guy like Ferry would fight so hard to maintain his seat.
Misspelling on Lott’s sign I guess means that not only the Tea Party have poor spelling skills.
Cash:
It can actually be demonstrated factually that Ferry barely got off the couch for this election, and he still squeaked through. That power of incumbency baby!
Timmy, I am not surprised that Ferry stayed on the couch; he seems to be lazy at best! Next time may be different..

Two SCV mothers arrested: one left her 4 year old child at home unattended while she was working (“It’s a sad situation when someone needs to work and doesn’t have daycare,” said Lt. Brenda Cambra)
That really is a sad situation.
If she is here legally, she should be paying for child care for her kid, plain and simple. If she refuses to do this due to finances or any other reason, she should go to jail for leaving her kid at home unattended.
Then again if she’s not here legally, the taxpayers should pay for this plus daily school meals. She shouldn’t be in trouble for breaking any laws because the life of an illegal immigrant is sad and hard and we should help them.
A sad situation indeed.
Help them my _ _ _! They cost us billions each year already!
I believe he was speaking tongue-in-cheek and alluding to the same thing.
Yes, it’s called irony, Cash. I share your outrage.
Actually it’s called sarcasm.
this guy is like the word police without a dictionary.
And you are not!
The difference is, I get it right.
You know what I’m saying?
How ironic
(he says sarcastically)
;-P
I don’t know any jokes that fit in a column this narrow.
I guess I made my point! No tongue-in-cheek! There was nothing ironic or sarcastic about the statement.
According to the LA Times article: “Something broke down in terms of transparency, in terms of knowledge of the community,” Pulskamp said.
Here we are in August 2010 and the current Santa Clarita City budget (FY 2010-2011) is not posted on the City’s website for the people to see. Other cities manage to not only post the current budget, but post proposed budgets in advance of the fiscal year, some as early as April prior to the fiscal year beginning July 1.
How fast will it be posted now?
Take a look for yourself at http://www.santa-clarita.com/Index.aspx?page=220
I see that the Santa Clarita FY 2010-2011 budget is now posted.
