TIN is live

Earlier this year SCVTalk did an in-depth report on a major upgrade to Santa Clarita Transit’s infrastructure known as the Transit Information Network, or TIN.  At the time, TIN was not yet fully available to the public.

The system has been live and available to all riders for the past two weeks.

Riders now have the ability to see the real-time status of their bus relative to their respective stop.

I have used the TIN website since they released it and have no snags to report.  Perhaps the most handy feature is the ability to get status from a smartphone via the mobile interface at m.santa-clarita.com.  The mobile interface prompts for a stop number and gives the ETA for all buses at that stop within the next 30 mins.  Stop numbers are on each of the SCTransit sign posts, and can also be gleaned from the map on the full TIN site.

A project of this scale involves an incredible amount of hard work; it is one of the few in the United States and represents the future of public transit.  Beyond the obvious value to riders, it will no doubt pay for itself in operating efficiencies and increased ridership.

Congratulations to Adrian Aguilar and the Santa Clarita Transit team!

Awesome. I echo your congrats to Santa Clarita Transit. Great work!

I have a feeling I will come to depend on this technology very soon as I transition from bike commuter to bus commuter.

I looked on some commuter stops down in the valley and they didn’t have stop numbers?

the numbers should be underneath the stop, if you don’t see it on the front, look on the back
What street stop are you looking at

Best bet is to get the stop numbers from the main web site.

How much did the upgrade cost and what is the ROI or ROE? MY guess the answer is a big ft zero if not a loss. Can any of us really afford this stuff in this financial environment? The way things are going we may all be forced to ride the bus or walk. This expense is not something to celebrate, we should be outraged.

The project was $2.8M and at least partially funded with Federal stimulus dollars. I have no idea what the ROI or payback statistics are on the project. I’m not sure an ROE measure is appropriate given there is no shareholder equity in our local government.

How do you hold a vendor accountable to on-time performance without this data? How would you pinpoint which drivers/buses/routes are perennially late?

From a rider’s perspective, the system makes a huge difference in the experience and will save people time and hassle. It will increase ridership and give the City the tools it needs to manage the vendor. I’d suggest within a few months, if not already, the system will become invaluable to SCTransit as they wrap processes and metrics around it. This is the cost of doing business.

Why are you against the City running an efficient transit system?

I have had this conversation with Cash before, he doesn’t get bus transportation and its effectiveness. I was riding the bus since the earthquake, was and still am a great believer and defender of SCT
All Cash could say was how it was being subsidized and he didn’t think he should have to pay anything. Oh boo hoo, it’s not like he has never been subsidized in his lifetime, he does drive the streets, etc etc

Ah, it doesn’t work with my computer! Woe unto me.

This is a really exciting program, though. Kudos to Santa Clarita Transit for taking initiative.
