- Awful: a 20 year old Goodwill store employee shot himself in the head after handling a miniature handgun on Monday. Deputies don’t know if it was intentional or not, but an employee of the store things the gun was donated. The man is in serious condition. SIGNAL
- The state has released API scores for Santa Clarita schools. The Newhall School District scored higher than all other elementary school Districts and the Hart District posted respectable scores as well, though some of the District’s several charter schools scored poorly. SIGNAL, KHTS
- Dave Bossert predicts the City won’t be able to collect on the 1997 library tax passed by voters in LA County and says the City will then have to conduct an election for a new tax. Oh, and he also says we can’t trust the Signal to be unbiased when it comes to City matters: “The Beacon obtained documentation which references City funds that have been spent on advertising in Signal publications in the last year. These City expenditures total in excess of $150,000, from September 2009 through August 2010.No surprise as to why the local paper isn’t going to investigate or report on anything that could cast the City in a negative light; they don’t want to bite the hand that feeds them and so the public gets screwed over!” WRB
- Worst anti-annexation slogan ever: Tesoro Del Valle HOA doesn’t want to engage in “premature annexation” to the City of Santa Clarita. I’m sorry, I can’t stop the school boy giggles. SIGNAL
- Four would-be burglars get a nasty surprise when they try to burgle a house in West Creek: the woman who lived at the home stepped in on them and then called for help. Two off duty cops responded (one LAPD and one LASD) and arrested two of the suspects; the LASD picked up the other two burglars later. The late afternoon burglary prompted a lockdown at West Creek Academy. SIGNAL
- The SCV Economic Development Corporation, the private group funded by $200,000 of your dollars, has approved a two year strategy plan. This comes a few months after the group hired a new executive director for Arizona; among other things the SCVEDC wants to “enhance the quality of life in the SCV,” “build a regional GIS-enabled buildings and sites database to market key properties,” and “educate the public about the impact of shopping locally.” SIGNAL

- Tony Bell, Supervisor Antonovich’s assistant (and a Deputy Supervisor in his own right) appeared on Fox 11 news last night to debate illegal immigration with an SEIU union organizer. Bell made all the standard arguments against illegal immigration but stated, surprisingly, that the country needs comprehensive immigration reform and a guest worker program. He’s the last sane Republican when it comes to immigration. FOX 11

Considering the number of ELD students at Hart, I think that one thing will be clear once you control for this: Hart remains the best place for a secondary education in the Santa Clarita Valley. As usual.
But can they hold on to the football? Burroughs on Friday will be a big test. If they are dominated by a Pacific League team the end is near!
The rings last forever.
Until everyone forgets after Hart becomes a continuation school for students expelled from Valencia!
Might I remind you Mr. Wilson that back in 2005-06 President Bush and Senator John McCain attempted to pass comprehensive immigration reform.
And Reagan got it passed in 1986: amnesty and get-tough measures, the latter of which was removed by subsequent Congressional action, thus setting the stage for history to repeat itself.
A well-known practical definition of insanity is to do the same thing and expect a different result…
I learned to handle a gun when I was a kid. One thing I was taught is to ALWAYS assume it is loaded. What a tragic event for this young man. BTW, who donates a gun to goodwill?
Or, more to the point, who accepts a weapon as a “donation” other than the LASD. Even if its Antique, no way that Goodwill is prepared to resell that.
With a child who attends 2nd grade AND afterschool care at West Creek Academy, I’m STUNNED that I’m learning about the lockdown now, and through this blog, rather than the day of from the school itself. I’ve e-mailed the school asking why they didn’t think it was necessary to notify parents, and my wife is on the phone with them now as well trying to figure that out. You’d think a school lockdown with theoretically violent criminals in the area would rate a call home to parents to notify them, particularly around dismissal time!!
I’ll update with more information if we get any…
So my wife spoke first with Keith Karzin, Director of Risk Management for Saugus USD, who said that the district’s policy is to notify parents, but that since the lockdown occurred during the transition between school & afterschool for kids in the lower grades they didn’t think to notify parents of kids in the afterschool program.
She then called the school directly and spoke with Maggie Medina, the office manager to try to find out why the school didn’t call, and got a face full of bad attitude and some yelling when she tried to find out what happened. No apology, no explanation, just attitude. Sad to see – this hasn’t been our typical experience with Saugus USD schools at all – we were pleased on moving from Newhall Elementary to Emblem last year that the office staff at Emblem was happy, friendly, and willing to help where Newhall’s office staff treated you like you were interfering with their day by coming in…
