  • SCV Home sales take a 26.9 percent dive in October compared to a year ago, the Signal says. Prices are down too some 7.1 percent from October 2009 for a median sales price of under $390,000. Condo prices and sales, however are up. Overall, compared to October 2009, there were 77.5 percent more active listings in October 2010. SIGNAL
  • Cracks are forming, ctd. The County of Los Angeles Public Library will reveal a $22 million “structural deficit” to LA County Supervisors today and propose extending the property tax on some cities for library services across the entire County to make up the deficit, according to the SIGNAL
  • Meanwhile, down the 126, City leaders in Ventura recently saw that Camarillo had decided to withdraw from the VECO Library system and go with LSSI. Now they’re contemplating the same thing, but a ‘wrinkle’ in state Education Code forces Cities in other California counties to withdraw from County libraries effective the first day of the year, which is, after all, only 30 days away. VECO STAR But that doesn’t apply to us here in LA County- a carve-out in the Education Code says LA County and Riverside County municipalities don’t have the same requirement. ED CODE
  • Yay! The cold snap is over. Boo! Windy times are here again. LA TIMES But at least one Santa Clarita Valley couple, originally from Denver, welcomed the cool weather remarking that buying a Christmas tree in 90 degree weather just never felt right ABC 7
  • The happy story about a Plum Canyon Elementary students reunion with his Iraq-serving Navy father required a lot of coordination and planning the SIGNAL says. The box the father popped out of was a movie prop, and Galpin provided a big bow. The dad had to stay with in-laws in San Diego last week until school returned this week. DAILY NEWS
  • The mother of two who was injured when a speeding CHP cruiser slammed into her SUV on Sunday night on I-5 is in fair condition at Mayo hospital. Her husband refused to talk to the press, saying he needed to talk to his attorney first. Reporter Jim Holt notes this isn’t the first speeding law enforcement officer who’s injured a driver this year. I’d add to that list the case several years ago where an LASD driver slammed into a passenger car near Mayo, and the infamous case just a couple of years ago where two LASD cruisers collided with each other en route to an emergency call at Golden Valley High School. All this is at the City kicks off another anti-speeding campaign.  SIGNAL
  • The Pentagon releases its important report today on the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. One of the key findings of the report is that 70 percent of military members say lifting the ban on openly-serving gay and lesbian service members “would have positive, mixed or no results.” AP.
  • To which Buck McKeon  said, “I’d like to know who these 70 percent are.” Buck McKeon has said we need to poll the military about DADT several times this year. WSJ
  • Interesting piece from KPCC about the history of Congressional earmarks and how they’re used. Congressman McKeon is hedging as other Republicans try to ban them. “”That’s a bad word now and we’re gonna have to find out how we do it.” KPCC
  • Letter writing senior hints that she’d pay for parking in Old Town Newhall SIGNAL
  • Like Netflix streaming? Well Comcast just rocked your and my world by asking an internet backbone provider to pay extra money to Comcast because so many people are streaming movies. They are, in effect, putting up a toll both HUFF PO

So Buck gets his poll, but it’s not to his liking.?

Careful, you may be seen as “questioning the troops”, Buck-O. Better stick to longing for days of selling tight Wranglers in Granary Square.

  2. Timothy Myers SR says:

The answer to Buck’s question is obvious. The 70% are the brave 18 to 25 year olds that make up the bulk of the recruited, professional armed forces and they are not fearful, bigoted homophobes like Buck. More indication that the clock is running out on homophobia. 100 more headstones in the graveyard in every community in this nation and the problem will be solved once and for all.

The high flying realtor club seems to be flying very low these days. They were once prevalent at local fund raisers, now not so much. I wonder if they will adjust there fees now that things are not so great?

Having Buck in the position of power should make us all a little concerned. I think he lacks the skill and the background necessary for the committee chair. An indicator of this his is the fact that his first order of business seems to attack gays that are willing to put their life on the line for him and his family. Seems there are much bigger issues, like stopping the death of our young people that are fighting a losing battle. Bigger issues that may be beyond his ability to manage.

Watching conservatives fight the eventual repeal if DADT is hilarious. They should just said they are against it because the bible says so. They keep calling for studies, research and military expert opinions which keep going against their opinions.

Give it up Buck, McCain and the rest of you liberty haters. You lost this.

Why does Buck want to know who those 70% are? Do the opinions of some servicemen and women count more than others in his estimation?

I can’t wait for the future when the quotes from Buck, McCain, and the rest of the Christianist far right that are anti-gay rights and pro-DADT will be displayed alongside those of the Strom Thurmond’s and George Wallace’s of the 1950s and 60s who opposed ending segregation.

Do these people realize they are on the wrong end of history?

  8. Berta González-Harper says:

Just in from KHTS news briefs, “At the Board’s regular meeting, the County of Los Angeles Library Commission delivered a report on ways to mitigate a potential $22 million annual structural deficit.

The report states that the County Library will need to either “increase funding or redefine service.”

What do you suppose is meant by REDEFINE SERVICE? Oh, I am sure it means libraries will be open more hours, have more staffing, enhanced materials, no charge for special requests, etc. Right????

    BGH

That is a good example of why I will not introduce myself. I am not interested in “I am sure” or any other of your intuitive BS. When we know the plan, we can comment on the plan. Until then sit still and wait.

    • Berta González-Harper says:

@Jerry you will not introduce yourself because you have said a whole lot of nasty crap to and about me and think you are anonymous doing so on this blog. That is why you continue to post using “Jerry”, post only to attack me, and have failed to make any of your cracks in person although you have had many opportunities. I am pretty sure I know who you are. I am just giving you some time to see if you have the courage to own up to your remarks and introduce yourself. I doubt it though since cowards rarely identify themselves when they know they will be held accountable.

Can somebody please tell me why (“monopolist”) Lennar keeps building houses when no one is buying? And as if the lots can’t get any smaller, they actually manage to squeeze even more houses onto tinier and tinier pieces of dirt. There are still so many unsold new houses in West Hills and RiverSomething, not including the ones previously owned that are now for sale (standard sales) and/or in foreclosure that just sit there month after month with no takers. Their MelloRoos are ridiculous, the HOA dues are ridiculous. The houses are all beige stucco boxes on postage stamp lots. No one wants these houses – certainly not in this economy, and for many, not in any economy. No one wants these MelloRoos/HOA money pits when there are so many nicer homes with bigger lots and no MRs and low HOAs to choose from at rock bottom prices. Lennar can’t compete with those. So no one is buying them and yet they keep on building them. Somebody please make it stop!!!!!!!!
