  • A long-simmering feud between two Canyon Country neighbors exploded Saturday morning when an argument at 3am escalated into gun violence. At the end of it, one 51 year old man was shot dead and his 51 year old neighbor was arrested on murder charges and is in the clink on $1million bail. So what was it all about? Flood lights pointed at master bedrooms and other un-neighborly behavior according to some residents of the street who say the two men hated each other for five years. SIGNAL
  • * Gold’s Gym coming to the SCV? A report in the SFVBJ says Gold’s Gym could be heading to the old Borders space in Town Center drive. Also, an eagle-eyed reader finds that the Tilted Quilt, an Pub Eatery that looks like it’s borrowing a page from Hooters, is coming to Town Center (perhaps the old Cafe Melisse space, the cursed home to many a failed restaurant?)

  • Myers was right? All four elementary districts and the Hart District are seeing a decline in enrollment, a decline that probably won’t reverse itself until 2015/2016 when new housing projects like Newhall Ranch is built. In 2011/2012 school year, the Hart district has 357 fewer students than last year, which is equivalent to about one entire grade. Are fewer families moving to the SCV? SIGNAL
  • Columnist Steve Lopez checks in with a North Hollywood resident who was unemployed for nearly two years after being laid off at his last job. The 46 year old got a lucky break though: he works the floor at Macy’s Santa Clarita earning $8.50/hr for roughly 20 hours a week. He can’t afford the health insurance Macy’s offers and the drive from NoHo to SCV eats half his paycheck but he’s happy to have found work again and the Macy’s manager says he’s an asset to the team. • Do you remember that other ‘high speed’ rail project that was going to have a stop in the SCV? I’m talking about Marsha McLean’s OrangeLine MagLev train project, which would whisk commuters from the SCV all the way to Orange County at about 120mph on magnetic levitation train tracks. The project has been around since 2002 but no tracks or stations have been built, and I’ve never even seen proposed alignments identified. Nevertheless organizers say the Orangeline is still kicking and could move forward soon. McLean sits on the board of the authority. BLOG

The untold story is the great impression Priscilla Lofton (Sulphur Springs) made. She told her compeling story, her reason for running and undersold her credentials. She walked away with the CRA endorsement and left a very positive impression on the audience.

    • Mike M says:

Even as an Android fan, I find the number of things labelled an “iPad killer” or “iPhone killer” astounding. Nothing is going to kill either of those two products unless Apple manages to do it themselves. They make good quality stuff built specifically for the crowd that wants it and can afford to buy it, and little will change that. What I would like to see is an Android tablet that actually gets the non-iPad market, which means competitive specs for a lower price point. That’s what it’s going to take to sell. Motorola has started to get that with the Xoom with their price cut, but obviously didn’t get that at all at the launch. Samsung has missed the mark completely, at least for the US market, because while their tablet is gorgeous it’s priced at or above iPad prices. Right now Acer seems to be the only one coming close to getting it with the eeePad Transformer. We’ll see what Amazon does…

Thumb up 3 Thumb down 1

      • Jeff says:

Custom Android interface (probably better thought out than any Android tablet right now ) + direct pipe into Amazon’s sphere of services and digital products + $250 price point = better value than the iPad.

Like the NY Times article said: it’s probably going to be more Toyota Corolla than Apple’s Lexus, but the Corolla is a big seller.

The closest thing to think of is B&N’s color nook, which has been something of a sleeper hit.

Thumb up 2 Thumb down 2

        • Alpiner says:

The B&N Color Nook is horrible, especially for the price.

Thumb up 2 Thumb down 0

        • Mike M says:

I usually have a pretty low opinion on custom Android interfaces. The stock UI has been pretty damn nice since at least 1.6 and has gotten cleaner/prettier every revision since. Custom interfaces have done little but bog down the processor, drain battery and delay OS update pushes in my experience. The G1, as underpowered of a phone as it was, was fabulous for having vanilla Android that you could dress up as much or as little as you wanted with add-ons, while still getting the benefits of OTA updates quicker than anyone but Nexus owners.

Honeycomb is a damn gorgeous UI – the biggest problem with it is it’s so customizable that most people, who should never be allowed to touch the internal workings of a computer of any kind, will make a mess of it the first time out and leave it looking like the demo units at Best Buy (which are an embarrassment, IMO). The best thing Google could do for that would be to create a few clean home pages with the essential app links and widgets locked down (and kept that way on demo models) and require you to intentionally acknowledge that you want to change the default layout before doing so, to keep the plebes from screwing things up.

The killer thing Amazon will have going for it is deep integration with the Kindle, Amazon MP3 and Video streaming markets, and if rumor holds true and Amazon buys Netflix that will make this tablet a serious competitor to the iPad – not because of its OS, but because of its easy access to content, which was Apple’s real win since the original iPod…

Thumb up 1 Thumb down 2

        • Nate says:

You can’t kill Ipad until you understand why people are buying it… price is just a small factor.

  6. Timothy Myers SR says:

The Hart District (and others) are getting squeezed two ways. First, only a handful of new homes have been built since 2007 to fuel attendance. Second, people are staying in their homes longer. Take the Myers Clan, for instance. In 2007 we had three children in the local public school systems and a mere six years later (2013) we will have none. We will attempt to do our patriotic duty when we move and sell to a family that will fill up our six bedroom house with school age kids.

Students at SCVi and AEA count as Hart students, don’t they? So even with those students- some coming in from other districts- they are dropping in numbers. And SCVi grew in numbers again this year.

Thumb up 1 Thumb down 4

      • Timothy Myers SR says:

They don’t count the charter schools. Can I have the “stoner cap” concession at SCVi?

      • LarMcc says:

But the API numbers at SCVi dropped again. I just took the tour and looked into it for my own kids. I was offered a slot and turned it down. I think they will need major changes to survive long term.

        • 4eyedsue says:

It’s nice to have choices, isn’t it?

Thumb up 0 Thumb down 2

          • LarMcc says:

I’m all for choices, but I question if what they are doing will work. I saw kids checking Facebook and playing video games in class in front of the teacher. There is minimal to no homework. The board of directors consists mostly of people in the film/TV industry. I was told teacher turnover is high.

We were going to look at AEA as well. They have great scores but it is a long wait to get in. Plus they have no high school so my kids would have to transfer into Hart at some point. In the end, we left the kids where they are. The school is great but we are having to deal with the standard social issues that develop at this age.

It’s our tax money SCVi uses. If they can perform at least as good as the public schools, then fine. If they can’t pull their scores up, something will have to change.

Thumb up 2 Thumb down 1

            • Ali says:

AEA does actually have a high school. This year it goes through 10th grade and will add a grade each year until they are 7-12. My son attends and we love it.

  7. Timothy Myers SR says:

What is the handicapping on the City Council vote tomorrow to implement (or not) the results of the election? I see Bob Kellar voting no and Ferry voting yes leaving it up to Weste (Ender and McLean excluded by a conflict.) If Weste votes no this is a big slap in the face to the City staff.

Thumb up 1 Thumb down 1

    • Jim Farley says:

Does the council have the discretion to vote this down if the “protest” in the form of ballots does not exist? If so I think you are right in predicting a “no” from Kellar. I predict a “yes” from both Weste and Ferry and the measure passing. Hopefully we can at least learn how the Newhall zone and new 2008-1 zone voted. If those two zones voted a majority “yes” it changes the whole tone of this thing. If they did I would be very surprised.

Thumb up 3 Thumb down 0

      • Splashguard says:

Seems if they vote yes, they acknowledge the “will of the people” and ignore the unfairness of this as structured by the staff. If they vote no, they acknowledge the unfairness, and will appear to be ignoring the “will of the people” and voting to keep taxes for some higher than they should be. The popcorn sales should be astounding. Dare they reveal how different zones voted? Are they required by law to do so?

Thumb up 2 Thumb down 2

        • Alan Ferdman says:

          SG

This is a Proposition 218 Assessment District election. It is decided by “Special Benefit” to property and not a vote of the people. Voting are property owners with votes weighted (simplistically) by how much property they own.

The outcome I would like to see is; realization by the Council that having both median and non-median landscaping zones in one district, with votes giving some property owners a reduction and annexing others, is simply not a fair way to conduct Assessment District elections.

In this case, Staff has put the council in a very awkward position.

Thumb up 5 Thumb down 2

          • Splashguard says:

“Will of the property owners” then. I hope you are correct, and they realize the unfairness and act accordingly.

Thumb up 0 Thumb down 1

          • DonRicketts says:

Why are they re-doing the medians on Soledad in Canyon Country? They looked alright to me,

Thumb up 5 Thumb down 5

        • Jim Farley says:

Yes they are required to give access to the election results. It is public information. I’ve been trying to get the results since last Thursday with no success. Apparently they have 10 days to respond to the request. I still have the electronic voting results from the Open Space balloting. This is where we discovered that seven developers were given a huge ballot weight without having to pay the actual assessment. The facts will be known eventually but I would not count on knowing by tomorrows meeting.

Thumb up 4 Thumb down 0

        • Alpiner says:

Since when has been ignoring the will of the people been a problem for the city council?

Thumb up 6 Thumb down 3

      • Timothy Myers SR says:

        Jim:

From reports of the last City Council meeting it appeared that Kellar “got” the fact that by combining districts and three different ballots etc., etc. the City had thrown a slider across the plate and gotten a swing and a miss and I see him voting “NO”. That leaves Weste again as the wild card and I would right now handicap that at 60% “YES.”

Thumb up 3 Thumb down 3

        • Actually, there were seven different ballots, five cover letters in the ballot package, the YES votes decreased some assessments, increased others, changed the method of assessment to EBU’s, created new zones, modified others, annexed additional properties into new zones or assessment areas and applied an entirely new tax to those areas, etc.

Given the fact that different properties had different EBU’s there were too many to count possible combinations of ballots.

But for those who got a ballot, which was not everyone in the Santa Clarita Valley, there was a Yes or No vote.

In one of the emails I got from the City it said: ” After concluding multiple Proposition 218 ballot procedures, the City has experienced that most owners want the necessary information to help them make an informed decision, but the ballot needs to get to the point as well. To this end, after considering the information contained in the ballot package, property owners want to make the decision that is best for them, and that usually comes down to “how much more or less will I pay if I vote YES or NO.” …. the customized ballots sent out on July 27, 2011 meet this goal.”

Library Card: I got a City card this Saturday. I asked if I could choose my own PIN but the employee said “the default is your phone number”.
