November 8, 2011 Daily Brief-The Incumbent Laboratory Edition

  • It is “Vote Counting” Day and our four contested elections in the SCV should provide a fantastic laboratory of the power of incumbency since the incumbent candidates appear to have done the bare minimum in the way of campaigning.  Of special interest to me is the Hart Board race where Steve Sturgeon seems to have done literally NOTHING to retain his seat but who I predict will actually come first.
  • Captain Becker assures the community the daylight homicide in Canyon Country is “not gang related.”  I have always wondered about this type of “good news” assertion since it does not make the victim any less dead.  The Captain also points out the irony that, unlike Stevenson Ranch and Valencia, perpetrators of recent serious crime in Canyon Country are all in custody.  Read the comments section to see the many reasons to flee Canyon Country screaming.
  • The Signal takes a break from publishing the 50th hagiography of Bruce Fortine in the LTE section to publish two feel good stories about good neighbors in the SCV.  First, a Mom’s group helping distraught grandparents and a nice person  returns a wallet at Trader Joe’s.
  • Leon Worden provides a brief history of the Greens which went from upscale amenity to gang hangout to burned down squat.  Ain’t real estate development grand?

Leon’s account of the Greens is false… The Greens turned into a douchetopia of the “bro” variety with Big Trucks, Monster Energy Stickers, Tapout Shirts, and herpes just one Jägerbomb away from an epidemic pandemic.

For all you NCIS fans with a little time on your hands: they’re scheduled to film this week on Town Center Drive, near Pottery Barn. http://www.filmsantaclarita.com/index.aspx?page=13

Aside from the horrible formatting of the KHTS story, it really demonstrates poor journalism. Leon should be able to do better than that. Its so disjointed, doesn’t flow, and doesn’t really tell the story. Leon’s “add-on” only distracts from the news, but since there isn’t much there, it only makes it worse.

Regardless, I used to be a frequent visitor to the Greens in the heyday. My then-girlfriend (now wife) and I stumbled upon it one day back in 2001 when we heard about it from a friend in passing… so we checked it out. It was great! I had my 25th birthday (or maybe 26th) there with friends and family on the patio, and we were ok paying the exorbitant fees (nearly $20 for a round? What?) to the ability to have a couple beers as we played (can’t get that at Castle Park!) and have a real evening of it.

But quickly, it deteriorated. As iMagic pointed out, the douchbaggery came in and started making it difficult to enjoy ourselves. The sad thing was seeing just how bad the facilites were becoming. The grass was dying, the plants were becoming overgrown, the sand traps were not maintained. I think our last visit was in 2004, maybe 2005. It was awful and we never looked back.

I don’t know if it was just poor business management on the part of the owners, or what, but it was full of promise unfulfilled.

Just another in a long line of things that have shown no matter how “affluent” the area claims to be, upscale businesses fail to prosper here (see Bristol Farms) because those who are affluent are too cheap and/or unwilling to actually patronize business in their own community. They fail to realize it will only lead to their own undoing.

Canyon Country is a very large area with many different communities so let’s not broad brush all of us. My neighborhood looks like Valencia. Okay, maybe it has gone to hell!

I see we are getting a new business across from McDonalds on Soledad moving into the appliance store bldg.

    It’s a Goodwill.

Will the city brag how jobs are coming to Canyon Country? Dollar stores, Big Lots and now a Goodwill. I’m feeling upscale.

Especially with a McDonalds. I have to drive several miles to get to one. :)

I’m convinced a Goodwill store will provide more jobs than the revolving door of furniture/appliance stores that have come and gone in that location throughout the years.

      • Todd says:

Yes, but no longer will the train of cars drive down Soledad, up Whites and over Sierra advertising the going out of business sale if a Goodwill is allowed to open there! Won’t someone think of the people who have to drive those cars!?!?!?!?!

Yeah, even Stevenson Ranch has a Goodwill.

Yes, but we do have the only Costco in town!

And the only Arby’s, Rattlers (I should have put this first on the list), Oggi’s, Fun Zone, and Food 4 Less.

It also has one each of the KFC’s and Don Cucos, which both only have two locations in SCV.

I think we should start a list: “What Canyon Country has that everyone is jealous of!”

Check cashing stores, payday advance stores and liquor stores. I can only think of two liquor stores in Valencia. If I want to get an advance on my paycheck and buy a pint of vodka, I gotta make that trek across town.

    • Coastal Sage says:

When my daughter was in elementary school, we used to go to Beverly’s craft store at Soledad Canyon & White’s Canyon at night, after I got home from work, as well as to Ralph’s, Food for Less, and the independent grocery store which replaced the second Ralphs. We were in the parking lots, and were never afraid.

Now Canyon Country residents who live near those stores tell me of frequent gunfire at night, gang members handing out in driveways of homes and condos, and that my daughter and I should NEVER go to Beverly’s without someone to protect us. They also tell me that my 65+ year old neighbor and friend, who lives near the intersection of Rainbow Glen and Gilbert, should not go to the supermarket there, at any time, alone, because she could be mugged.

This just breaks my heart. Ten years ago the single family neighborhoods of Canyon Country were a wonderful, affordable, family oriented community with Whites, Hispanics and a few Blacks and Pakistanis living together in harmony and relative quiet. It used to be a blast to Trick or Treat on the streets off Rainbow Glen, where more than 800 kids lived.

While house prices have fallen back to 2003 levels in Canyon Country, it’s still too darn expensive to put up with the level of crime which is being privately complained about!

Instead of p’ing away Santa Claritans’ sales and vehicle tax dollars on questionable real estate purchases and other grandiose projects, the City of Santa Clarita needs to refocus its tax revenues on buying more sheriffs-deputy-hours from the L.A. County Sheriff to increase police presence on the streets of Canyon Country. Perhaps the mis-spending of the City’s revenues by the Council, to the detriment of public safety, should be made a key re-election issue for Bob Kellar (Canyon Country resident) and Laurie Ender (Valencia resident).

Did you ask if they voted for Pat Hill. I think Mr. Myers has pool going on somewhere about how many votes Dr. Hill will get.

I think the over under is somewhere around 50… :-)

Hey Perez, did you see Sister Angela Davis on television giving a speech at Occupy San Francisco? She’s got to be pushing 70 years old yet still has the verbal fire power which used to scare the heck out of the U.C. Regents back in the late 60′s and early 70′s. I wish all of the old Lady Panthers, including Tupac’s mom, would come out and speak up about what is going on in America.

We ended up with 79 votes out of 2,900+ registered in our precinct. I didn’t count how many were issued vote-by-mail ballots, although Lord knows I certainly had enough time sitting there to do so.

Like they said on the radio this morning, they need to create a voting App and the numbers will switch from American Idol to the American Election.
