November 10, 2011 Daily Brief-Election Hangover Edition

  • In all the “excitement” yesterday concerning desultory off year election results, I neglected to link to the always readable IHEARTSCV entry on Tuesday’s City Council meeting, which included a marathon speakathon by Cam Noltemeyer on consent calendar items.
  • Headline states that Melissa Brown received 99 days for vehicular manslaughter in the July 4th death of Matilde Garnica in Valencia.  As usual, the untold story is that Ms. Brown actually received a sentence for 180 days but was given credit for time served which is usual, and the untold, untold story, which is how she came to spend 81 days in custody before sentencing.

Punishment probably fits the crime.  Ms. Brown will serve a long probation and will always be known as the careless driver that killed a person, something I would definitely not want.

  • Soledad Canyon motorist  may not know how lucky he is.  A less well trained and capable peace officer may have shot him dead when he attempted to ram him with his car.  SCVNEWS has the details.
  • Natalie Everett pens a story on “close” elections from Tuesday which is not available for linking at the moment.  (A story regarding complaints about night filming is double linked.)  There is a nice picture of an earnest Patrick Hill right now to look at.  Anxious to see the actual story but for a better take on what REALLY happened Tuesday be sure to read the Signal on Sunday. (Shameless plug!)
  • Well, take care of the SCV for me because I am off to Las Vegas for a two night boondoggle.  Believe me, I deserve it!!!

Desultory? DESULTORY?!? How can you call it DESULTORY!?!?

(Can someone tell me what desultory means? I broke my Google. Thanks.)

If the responses on yesterday’s daily brief were any indication I think the word ‘desultory’ makes it seem sexier.

Whenever I see that word, I think of Lynne Truss and the chapter on semi-colons from Eats, Shoots & Leaves: The Zero Tolerance Approach to Punctuation. She was fourteen and responding to a pen-pal.

“To this day, I am ashamed of what I did to Kerry-Anne (who unsurprisingly never wrote back). I replied to her childish letter on grown-up deckled green paper with a fountain pen. Whether I actually donned a velvet smoking jacket for the occasion I can’t remember, but I know I deliberately dropped the word “desultory”, and I think I may even have used some French. Pretentious? Well, to adapt Gustave Flaubert’s famous identification with Emma Bovary, ‘Adrian Mole, âgé de treize ans et trois quarts…c’est moi.’ The main reason I recall this shameful teenage epiphany, however, is that in my mission to blast little Kerry-Anne out of the water, I pulled out (literally) all the stops: I used a semi-colon. ‘I watch television in a desultory kind of way; I find there is not much on,’ I wrote. And it felt so good, you know. It felt fantastic.”

Melissa will probably be out in about 2 weeks. Jail overcrowding and good behavior will have her out soon. Even the family of the victim didn’t want her in jail.

Enjoy Vegas. I just got back… highly recommend checking out STK at the Cosmopolitan for dinner… if you can get Dragon as your server, she’s awesome!

Petz is madder than hell that after further review the lions are still the lions. Petz proclaims Matt Stafford a liberal plant!
