  • Is it just me or have the forecasters gotten spooky good at predicting inclement weather?  KABC7 provides the general report with about one inch of rain expected which could translate into 10 to 14 inches of snow in local mountains.  The snow level is expected to get down to 2,500 feet tonight so bundle up and drive carefully.
  • How does a public institution like COC make employee and administrator pay raises in a time of fiscal austerity?  Fiscal conservatism  according to trustee Joan MacGregor.  (Yes, you read that right.)  Honestly not a lot of money but poor optics when COC “students” can sometimes not enroll in ANY classes, resulting in a de facto rejection.
  • Grieving folks who have lost a child meet at Canyon Country Park including Alice and Tom Renolds who lost two out of three sons in a head on collision on Soledad Canyon Road on February 17, 2000 which was a HUGE story for many reasons and probably deserves a place in the top 25.  This is an especially poignant story since I remember specifically crossing Soledad Canyon Road on White’s Canyon that evening on my way to pick up my then 11 year old son from a Parks and Recreation tennis lesson at Bouquet Canyon Park 45 minutes before the accident.  Poignant because that son is now 23 and the Reynolds were deprived of all those tomorrows, times 2.
  • High school student pens LTE touting the candidacy of Jon Hatami.  Meanwhile, candidate Hatami spends weekend posting to Facebook page about amending the three strikes law and how he is in favor of the death penalty?  Jon, we love you, but it is only a matter of time before you opine on the Euro crisis.
  • Now there is something else to worry about!  Newhall resident writes a letter to Bob Kellar expostulating on the dangers of unlocked cable boxes, which will bring down Western Civilization long before Newhall Redevelopment.
  • Incumbency machine kicks into high gear tomorrow!  Laurie Ender will become “Mayor” just in time to kick off her reelection campaign and attract the casual voter who does not realize that the Mayor merely presides at council meetings and cuts the ribbon at Chamber grand openings.
  • Also, in their mid-year budget there are all kinds of goodies, including $300k for Community Center in Canyon Country for those who think City government ignores you and delivers the mail there last.  (Inside joke.)  Before anyone gets excited about a really cool brick and mortar community center like the one in Newhall this could procure a lease in some distressed strip mall in Canyon Country.  It would be the height of irony if the space had been recently vacated by a massage parlor.
  • Mega Church Christianity in recession?   Buried in this story is a budget adjustment related to the fact that Grace Baptist Church will not be paying development fees this year on a multi-level parking structure because the project has been put on “hold.”

No matter what kind of building is leased for a Community Center in Canyon Country it is a, long sought after, step in the right direction.

Your “inside joke” makes it very hard to remain appreciative when you unnecessarily open old wounds.

      Alan:

Are you a “mailer” who believed that Newhall Land, the City and the USPS conspired to make sure that mail was delivered to Valencia first and Canyon Country last? Doe anyone under the age of 100 even care about when the mail reaches their mailbox on a daily basis?

What is your take on today’s Signal article telling the story of the West Ranch Town Council withdrawing it’s letter of approval for a Cell Tower permit because of Public health concerns? That is in contrast to the Santa Clarita City Council which recently indicated they could not consider public heath when approached by City residents with similar concerns. I wonder if the WRTC knows something we do not.

Also, on the subject of RF safety, have you seen the West Ranch Beacon’s commentary on Smart Meter RF issues.

      http://westranchbeacon.com/2011/11/commentary-edison-smart-meters-raise-questions-part-ii/

Click on “report here” and it will bring up a 100 page consultant’s technical report talking about this similar issue.

I have no opinion on that because it is of no consequence. The County will still approve the Cell Tower no matter what the WRTC says.

Our FCC is far behind the rest of the world in regulating the safety of electromagnetic radiation. It is the powerful money of the telecommunications industry that has stripped local governments of their control and have blinded the FCC in their favor. Look at these statistics:

“According to a research scientist from Princeton, the wireless industry was able to influence the FCC in adopting limitations for public exposure to RF/MW radiation. Not surprisingly, after over $400 million was spent on political contributions and lobbying, the FCC adopted “standards” which permit the American public to be exposed to RF radiation levels 10 to 5,000 times higher than what has been deemed safe in other Countries. Government Related Information & Links
        Austria……………………0.1 microwatts per centimeter squared
        Switzerland……………..4.2 microwatts per centimeter squared
        China………………………6.6 microwatts per centimeter squared
        Italy………………………..10 microwatts per centimeter squared
        Russia…………………….10 microwatts per centimeter squared
New Zealand…………..50 microwatts per centimeter squared

United States………….580 microwatts per centimeter squared”

There are also 100′s of studies that have been documentesd indicating that link low level RF/MW radiation and EMF’s with cancer and other adverse health impacts.

Those that are concerned about cell service should pick up a microcell (a mini cell tower) for their home. There are a few of us that are indeed concerned with health issues.

I think the only “inside info” the WRTC has are the voices in Dave Bossert’s head.

To correct the comment on the cable box issue: The state now controls cable and telephone franchise agreements. Thanks to them, there is now very little local control that cities and the county can levy against them. Your crappy cable television service is about to get a whole lot worse.

“$25,000 to design 27 additional parking spaces at the Valencia Library for a total of 70 spaces;”….Will be this be necessary after the new library is open?

“On hold are a parking structure at Grace Baptist Church, medical office buildings in Valencia and Canyon Country, and a shopping center at Via Princessa.”….Which medical office buildings in Valencia? Any news about continuing to build at HMNMH, particularly the inpatient building?

Seriously though, last I heard, they had not started design (would take at least a year for design and another year for design review by OSHPD) and probably another 2 -3 years to bid and construct.

Don’t hold your breath on this one…

        • Eric Heilbrun says:

The reason I asked was that the agreement had stipulations about not being able to construct the THIRD office building until the inpatient building had begun, but if the office buildings are on hold, I don’t believe that should be a reason to delay the inpatient building.

Also, the city seems to have removed the signed agreement from the its website. I used to be able to find it for reference…is it still up and I’m just missing it, or has it been removed? Anyone know?

Damn it. I knew this would happen again. No amount of “safety measures” can stop truck drivers who are on a deadline and hopped up on drugs from doing stupid things.

Plain and simple. The CHP NEEDS MORE ENFORCEMENT IN THE NEWHALL PASS!!!!

Further, there needs to be repercussions against drivers, trucking companies and those who hire them for those who wreck frivolously and cause hundreds of thousands of hours of lost productivity.

What the hell am I doing awake now? I need to be up @ 4am just to hope and pray I get to work sometime before 8am.

      • Todd says:

So, I woke up @ 4, checked the Cadweb (a handy tool if you don’t have it. http://cad.chp.ca.gov It shows all the CHP incidents statewide.) and see that the Sigalert was extended “indefinately” at about 2:30am. Pissed as hell, I get up, shower, start to get dressed and turn on the news. Sure enough they’re touting that the CHP has just reopened the truck routes.

Back to bed, freshly showered, for another 2 hours.

I swear to God. Either Santa Clarita needs more jobs/employers that provide professional opportunities, or I need to move out of the bottleneck.
