December 28, 2011 Daily Brief-”The Signal Writes History Edition”

  • The SIGNAL FINALLY gets around to revealing the names of the three additional hopefuls who have pulled papers for the City Council election .  Petz gets some nice quotes.  While SCVTALK has spoken to Brandy Brown, teacher and kickball maven, neither the Signal or SCVTALK has got in touch with Garrison Lysik.  Garrison, answer your Facebook message!
  • Ed Colley  gets nice write up in the SIGNAL regarding his candidacy.  Comments are predictably brutal.
  • One can buy tickets for the COWBOY POETRY FESTIVAL starting January 3, but the Sons of the San Joaquin won’t be there for only the second time.  Second story reveals that the total budget for the festival is a (relatively) modest $220K, offset by ticket sales and sponsorships to (hopefully) break even.  (Compare that with the $750K spent by Newhall Land for the now abandoned Bella Serra street painting festival.)
  • Buck and Patricia McKeon realize that the primaries are now “open.”  Sources inform us that they both made an appearance at a recent local DEMOCRATIC Club Holiday party.
  • And as an extra added bonus I can give unequivocal “thumbs up” to the films “We Bought a Zoo” and “The Descendants” which the Myers Clan viewed over the long holiday.  The latter film may turn out to be the launching pad for a fantastic film career by Shailene Woodley, known prior to this film for her title roll in the cable teen prime time soap, “The Secret Life of the American Teenager.”
  • Also, I got a Kindle Touch for Christmas and yesterday borrowed my first ever eBook from the Santa Clarita Library.  I have to admit it worked perfectly.  If the system for audiobook downloads is as easy and robust then I will become one of the converted and probably vote for Laurie Ender if Petz decides not to run.

You do realize that the eBook system is the same as LA County, LA City, Pasadena/Glendale, the city of San Francisco, and just about every other public library? It is all driven by a company called OverDrive. Santa Clarita has nothing to do with how well the system works — that’s OverDrive and Amazon. In fact, the interface is a bit less friendly with the way Santa Clarita has had OverDrive configured. We tend to have shorter wait times (better user to book ratio because of our smaller user population I would guess), but a much sparser choice of digital items than a larger system. I search/browse first with the county (easier to use interface) and then see which system (Santa Clarita, LA city, LA county, other systems) has the shortest wait list. A bit more work, but I get the item quicker.

Ditto. Laurie Ender had as much to do with e-book lending as Al Gore had with inventing the internet. I have cards with SC, LA County, and LA City as well. I also use Freegal for music…also not a SC exclusive.

      TM: Good sarcasm!

Santa Clarita & Eric: Yea, and we also know she didn’t invest the book. Just setting the record straight, in case you felt that would need clarification in the future. Wouldn’t want anyone thinking Laurie created the book. Oh, and I’m sure she didn’t create the streetlight either. Should also point out that other cities have streetlights.

Not sarcasm at all. I am committed to vote for Jon Hatami and Petz, but if Petz does not run I will most likely give my other vote to Laurie Ender.

Why is there a wait time for digital downloads? It’s not like someone has to bring the physical book back to the branch.

      • Adam says:

Like paper books they only get allotted so many copies of the digital books that they can loan out at a time. Sine they are still protected intellectual property the library has to treat them with the same respect as a printed book and only allow a specified number of digital copies (whatever number they bought) to be loaned out at once.

While they could, from a technical standpoint, loan out as many digital copies as they want, there are still other IP issues to take into account. So the general practice is to do it this way.

In-depth and solid write-up on the latest development in Newhall Ranch. Unsurprisingly the Signal made no mention of a hidden EPA letter that points at how development in the Newhall ranch area will likely erode river banks along the Santa Clara.

Marlee Lauffer, for the 1000th time, claims Newhall Ranch isn’t sprawl because it’s walkable and there will be Starbucks barista jobs available for all the middle aged professionals who buy homes.

  4. Lori Rivas says:

Buck and Patricia were, in fact, at last night’s holiday party/homeless shelter fundraiser. Arriving about an hour after the party started, and immediately shaking hands. To my trio, Patricia commented on the beautiful house of the host, and lamented that they didn’t put up a Christmas tree because they thankful to spend just two days in a row in the same place.

When Jonathon gathered everyone together for introductions, Patricia was the first called up, but we had to wait while her husband retrieved her from the adjacent room. She gave an ambling introduction about being a mother and grandmother, a local unsung or invisible volunteer (I forget which adjective she used), how wonderful California is, and that she wants to keep businesses from leaving the state. She listed her qualifications as: managing the finances of a campaign (her husband’s, she declined to state); managing her household finances; and some other things, I don’t remember. No mention of plastic bags, nor waiting in line for groceries. And, according to Patricia, you can find out more at her campaign office on Lyons — wait, isn’t that Buck’s office on Lyons and Atwood? Maybe she has a different office on Lyons? I don’t know.

When it was Buck’s turn to speak, he began with a “joke” about a doctor, an architect and a politician, and which was the oldest career. He talked about serving on the armed services committee, and reaching across the aisle to work with the Dems on the committee. No mention of Cemex or Acosta.

The McKeons high tailed it out of there after their speeches, not lingering to answer questions, which was the point of the whole event.

Strickland said he would “solve problems;” Wilk was brief and to the point; Rogers said he would address Cemex right away.

    • Phil Ellis says:

Bella Via was a commercial event sponsored by NL&F. When the cost became prohibitive for them, the City incorporated a smaller scale event, including a kids section, in another Old Town event. The City hs now moved its emphasis from a single weekend event to Senses, a monthly event. Thomas, if you haven’t been to Senses, you should consider going. This event seems to draw a crowd of all ages.

        Phil:

But a shadow of its former self. Newhall Land paid tens of thousands of dollars to “name” artists to make squares for Bella Via. I don’t think the City has that kind of dough for the Newhall incarnation.

  7. lvogel says:

Descendants was a very good movie; for me it had a ‘Little Miss Sunshine’ feel to it, thought not with the comedy.

Girl With The Dragon Tattoo was good; very violent and a horrible rape scene, but the suspense and detective work really was something to watch.

The Artist; EXCELLENT! I found the audience either really liked it, or really disliked it. A very entertaining movie!
