December 29, 2011 Daily Brief-”Don’t Drink and Drive” Edition

  • DUI arrests COUNTYWIDE (Not the City, Jon Hatami supporters) are up 20% over last year. Jon Hatami takes to his Facebook page to remind everyone not to drink and drive. Waiting for future posts on brushing after every meal and breakfast is the most important meal of the day.
  • On Facebook campaigning Jon Hatami’s page is only up to 152 “Likes.” Something else is going to have to happen because it will take at least 6,000 to 6,500 votes to capture a City Council seat this time around.
  • In real crime, SCVNEWS reports on how Sheriff’s Deputies run down two knuckleheads at the Placerita Canyon gate on Sierra highway who worked over one’s girlfriend and then a vigilante who stepped in to help.
  • A FORMER resident gets charged with a double murder in Chatsworth but before the Hatamites get all excited the accused lived here more than 18 years ago so the current City Council cannot be held responsible.
  • WRB brings us the last Time Ranger column of the year; a New Year’s themed one.
  • Still hoping before the turn of the year for some certifiable wing nuts to jump into the City Council race. I am praying that Daniel Henriquez comes back so that he can regale us with tales about how he personally shot Osama Bin Laden!

You native Californians are so prickly! Jon spent time in Nebraska so he knows that in the Midwest sarcasm and snarkiness are the highest (only) form of affection.

Something to certainly mention in the Time Ranger column – my favorite part!

“——— Burdett Houser, local government hunter, went out to his pick-up truck and found someone swiped 32 of his coyote traps. Value? About 48 bucks. Wonder where Wile E. Coyote was during all this? (NOTE TO SCV TALK: We are not officially BLAMING Wile E. Coyote as a historical fact. We’re just taking artistic license…) “

Yes, the Hatami references are getting a little old. Guess if someone came across this site he assumes they would know what he is referring to.

  6. Mike says:

Tim, you missed a Hatami reference in bullet points 3, 5 and 6.

Jon knows well that this is the only coverage that he is likely to be getting for a while, and if they old adage is true, I am sure he is grateful.

    • Phil Ellis says:

Tim, with only about 150 or so FB likes, you are doing Jon a great service – just not sure that it will help.

      • Timothy Myers SR. says:

I think Jon is good for 3 to 4 thousand votes. He would pull off a real coup if he managed to come fourth.

  8. Petz says:

Petz is the candidate of the common man. Nominating signatures are easy to get standing at the redemption center ay Albertsons. Only Petz is going to work with landlords and big box stores to allow people to REDEEM their bottles and cans. We will increase the number of centers by 50% in my first term.

We are also going to work with the parks department to get a better mix of music at the Concerts in the Park which reflects the sensibilities and demographics of the neighborhood. Think of Petz as a living and breathing Pandora.

      Hmmm, Pandora.

      Yes.

You mean we might have something other than 80′s tribute bands? That is indeed controversial!

      • Petz says:

Battle of the Worship Teams and some country, no more Zydeco. That Queen Tribute band was pretty good several years ago.

I want to see a good Johnny Cash tribute band, they had one at one point (petty Cash) I think, but Cash’d Out (www.cashdout.com) is the only one authorized by the estate of the Man in Black himself. I saw them once, the guy looks, acts and sings like JC from the 60′s. Truly awesome. Plus they do all his songs, not just the ones that caught on the with MTV crowd.

You would spend City money to get the Psycho Pastors in our Central Park?

  9. Capt. Gene says:

No wonder DUI fatalities are “rare” now.

Thumb up 6 Thumb down 1

  10. Capt. Gene says:

    Make that “extremely rare”.

Thumb up 3 Thumb down 0

  11. ScottE says:

I enjoy rare but have been informed by an expert that medium-rare is the aficionados’ “sweet_spot.”

We’re talking about steaks … right?

Thumb up 3 Thumb down 0

    • Mike says:

The sweet spot indeed. A hair before medium rare, if that is a hair we want to split.

At rare, the proteins haven’t broken down yet, so you aren’t getting the full taste. Did you know that raw, lean beef tastes exactly like raw, lean venison or bison?

At medium rare (or medium-rare minus to be exact) the proteins have broken down, but they haven’t coagulated. Or something like that.

Also, don’t order medium rare minus. No one likes that guy (I used to be that guy).

Also, ordering steak at a restaurant is kinda silly, as you well know. Easy to do at home for far less money. If your steak at home isn’t as good as the restaurant, just buy better steak.

We have more structure fires per year in the SCV than we have places to get a nice steak cooked, um, properly.

      • Phil Ellis says:

Restaurants seem to have a lock on the better cuts. Where do you buy your meat?

Thumb up 1 Thumb down 1

        • Mike says:

I rarely splurge, and SCV Supermarkets aren’t keen on stocking the better stuff, but the most expensive stuff at Whole Foods – some USDA Prime dry aged this and this and that for $28 a pound will blow your mind. For $20, you get a huge, delicious steak that would fetch an easy $55 (or more) in a sit-down setting.

Otherwise, Costco is decent, and they even carry Prime from time to time (or maybe always). The best thing you can do it to salt heavily at least an hour before cooking. When it comes time to cook, wipe off any excess then season as you would, just with far less salt. In that hour, the salt has made its way through the meat, tenderizing and seasoning it. Incredible.

        • LarMcc says:

Costco New York primes are hard to beat and affordable. Whole Foods dry aged porterhouses are good too, but at almost $30 a pound, they get expensive quick.
