Dear SCV Democrats:

Did you know that there are way more than 36,000 registered Democrats in the Santa Clarita Valley?

Did you know that if we Democrats got just a few percentage points of the so called “decline to state”, or “independent” voters to vote our way, we would outnumber Republicans in Santa Clarita, and could elect Democrats to every office?!?!

This is just one of the many issues we will touch upon at the first meeting of 2011 of the Democratic Club of Santa Clarita Valley, Santa Clarita’s oldest Democratic grass roots organization. I am honored to have been elected President for the next two years.

Elected along with me is an outstanding team of officers, including Vice President Minerva Williams Hoover, Treasurer Rick Drew, Corresponding Sectretary Todd Hoover, and interim Recording Secretary Mike Cruz. Look for a press conference and event announement about what we will be doing in a few days.

There is an even more important pressing event for all of us in Santa Clarita, however. There is a special election set for most of us on Tuesday, February 15!! This election will determine who will represent us in the California State Senate 17th District, which covers much of Santa Clarita Valley!!

Republican George Runner resigned this seat to move on to the State Board of Equalization, leaving much of his term to still be served. George Runner left the seat at the last possible moment, leaving only a few days for any candidates to file for a special election to choose a new Senator. George’s wife Sharron Runner was the only Candidate to file.

Until!!

Until, until, until, A FANTASTIC CANDIDATE, AN OUTSTANDING DEMOCRAT, did file, making this a two person only race. The man is Darren Parker, and he is so good, you will be dazzeled!!! Darren Parker has a chance to WIN THIS SEAT, because of all the unusual circumstances in this race for the State Senate. Darren will be our guest speaker at our Thursday meeting. Please come and see one of the most dynamic, dedicated individuals you will ever be fortunate enough to meet this Thursday at Caruso’s in Canyon Country at 6:30pm. Please open the flyer attached to this email, and place this meeting on your agenda!

(Caruso’s II is about 200 feet north of Soledad Canyon Road, on Sierra Highway, on the East side of the street. Go all the way to your right when you enter the restaurant, to the Banquet Room) Please RSVP. Come join us!!

Sincerely, Allan Cameron, President elect, Democratic Club of Santa Clarita Valley

The Fourth of July is only a few weeks away. Along with the parade there are a number of other events and I’m pleased the fireworks show is on once again:

Hey why not do the smart thing and avoid the traffic and parking nightmares (which are truly epic) all together? If you live in Valencia or even Newhall, North Valencia or Saugus, it’s easy to hop on a bus, ride your bike or even walk to the mall on the paseo and path system. Harder to carry chairs and other party supplies, but declaring Independence from the British was no easy task either, now was it?

So do what our Founding Fathers would have done: walk, ride, or take public transit to Westfield Town Center on July 4!

And no vuvezelas at the fireworks shows, ok? I think I’ll really be sick of them by then.

to all the construction in Newhall is that we become dependent upon work crews to do their jobs right, like, I don’t know, ensuring heavy steal plates fit properly and don’t expose the hole underneath to motorist:

I rode up to Lyons & Orchard at about 5:05 pm today and found it odd to hear a steel plate moving up and down as vehicles drove over them. I looked over and saw two individuals watching the scene; car after car passing directly over the fallen plate. One of the bystanders was attempting to wave vehicles to the left, but a few drove directly over the hole anyway.

The bystanders said they had been there for 30 minutes and had called the Sheriff’s Station several times. I left around 5:30pm and still no one had showed up to put cones in front of the fallen plate. A woman parked her vehicle to the right of the plate in an effort to make sure vehicles steer clear, but she had to go, as did I (I had some ice cream in my bike panniers).

You should have seen the speed at which some drivers went over the plate. I felt for sure a few would crash into the opening, but no one had by the time I left.

The Canyon Country Advisory Committee is made up of a group of concerned Santa Clarita residents interested in issues relating to Canyon Country and the surrounding east Santa Clarita Valley. This group meets the 3rd Wednesday of every month from 7PM to 9PM, in the George A. Caravalho Activity Center Banquet Room, 20880 Centre Pointe Parkway, Santa Clarita. Meetings are open to the public. If you have a concern or just want to come and listen you are welcome to attend.

Now that the holidays are a memory and 2010 is upon us, so is another Santa Clarita City Council election cycle. This time around we will choose 3 individuals to represent us over the next 4 years. As important as this may sound, the Canyon Country Advisory Committee does not endorse, or campaign for, any candidates even though we share the belief that the City Council election process is paramount in maintaining our Santa Clarita way of life. Instead, we look to aid every resident familiarize themselves with the candidate’s positions and encourage our neighbors to vote for the candidates of their choice. To aid in making that vision a reality, the Canyon Country Advisory Committee has sponsored Candidate Forums and “Meet the Council Candidate” sessions during the 2006 and 2008 City Council election cycle. For 2010 we are equally committed to bring City Council candidates and the community members together using our “Meet the Council Candidate” town hall format. In this way, we will get to see the candidates up close, hear them tell us their visions and answer questions from the audience.

“Meet the Council Candidate” session give each candidate 30 minutes. Candidates may use as much as 10 minutes to tell us about themselves and the remainder of the time to answer questions from the audience. Currently, there are 12 City Council candidates vying for 3 open seats. “Meet the Council Candidate” sessions are being scheduled over 3 Canyon Country Advisory Committee meetings.

At the January 20 CCAC Meeting:

Disney Corporation will be providing a presentation on their latest local project. This new facility to be located on Pacerita Canyon, east of HWY 14, will bring excitement, creativity and jobs to our valley.

The first in a series of “Meet the City Council Candidate” sessions will be held. At this meetingTimBen Boydston and Harrison Katz will be telling us about themselves and answering questions from the audience.

At the February 17 CCAC Meeting:

The second installment of the “Meet the City Council Candidate” sessions will feature David Gauny and Marsha McLean.

At the March 17 CCAC Meeting:

The third installment of the “Meet the City Council Candidate” sessions will feature Johnny Pride.

In addition to those candidates listed above; Frank Ferry, David Galvan, Daniel Henriquez and Laurene Weste remain uncommitted for a session. Mark Kirkpatrick, Kenneth Mann and Henry Schultz will be sent invitations this week. We will keep you informed as the schedule firms up.

Please join us for what will be very informative meetings. I hope that you can make them and look forward to seeing you there.

Alan Ferdman

Chair, Canyon Country Advisory Committee
