Joe Kapp, who in pre-Twlight days held the position for decades as SCV’s most famous son, is making a run at the title again at the age of 74. It isn’t enough that he quarterbacked in a Rose Bowl, a Grey Cup and a Super Bowl. He’s now a genuine 21st Century celebrity as the star of a very bizarre viral video.

At at CFL benefit luncheon in Vancouver last week, he welcomed CFL legend and former pro wrestler Angelo Mosca, 73, with an olive branch (literally). I’m not up on their history, but I’m going to guess it isn’t so rosy. Watch what happens:

This video is getting pulled left and right, so I’ll update the link once it finds a permanent home. In case you can’t see it, Mosca swats Kapp’s olive branch away and Kapp responds by slapping his arm. Mosca then rises to his feet and starts swinging his cane at Kapp. Old Joe then takes down the ex-wrestler with a flurry of punches, sending him off the stage.

Whether Jeff has retired like Sanders or Favre is an open question. In the meantime, I’m left to stand up for the valley’s greatest football program, Hart High School, against the new kid who graduated from Valencia and Myers, who is both a shameless VHS booster and a sworn enemy of Hart. No one this side of Frank Ferry has tried harder to sling rocks at the red and black giant that looms over this valley than Mr. Myers.

But guess what? The wins keep coming. Take a minute to soak in Joey Gulino’s account of Hart’s 19-14 shocker over Valencia.

The sign says it all. Wow!

His proud cousin Dean writes in:

James Shields of the Tampa Bay Rays and a grad of Hart High has made his first MLB All-Star game posting a hard luck 8-7 rcord this season. He ranks in the top 10 in most of the big pitching categories with a 2.33 ERA, 137 Strikeouts, a 0.98 WHIP, 3 shutouts, and has held opposing batters to a .210 average this season. He leads the majors with 7 complete games over Roy Halladay with 6 and Pick Offs with 10, the next player has 6.

James is enjoying his best season as a pro. He is married to his wife Ryane and they have 2 daughters together. He is a native of Newhall Ca. WOW!!! Finally got some sports on here!

It seems to me all the best athletes come from Hart High. With Shields’ All Star status, Newhall’s supremacy over the SCV is confirmed in yet another arena (sports).

Speaking of sports, Dean couldn’t help but ding me for the appalling lack of sports coverage on SCVTalk:

It took an All-Star season to get any pub on here at all? Put down your Ipod, Ipad, Ihome and whatever other gadgets you have and watch a good ol’ fashioned game once in a while!

Noted! But I don’t know an RBI from a rib-eye steak so I could use some help. If any of you readers would like to see more SCV-centric sports coverage on SCVTalk, feel free to email me posts or ideas for posts at jeff at scvtalk.com

Congrats Jamie!

It’s not a stage finish like we had in 2007 and 2008, but I’ll take it: stage 8 of the 2011 ToC will start at Town Center Drive, proceed out Highway 126 and south on Balcom Canyon road before finishing in Thousand Oaks. It all happens on Sunday, May 22:

Link to PDF of the route

It’s unknown at this point whether legends like Lance Armstrong or George Hincapie will participate in this year’s Tour of California, but there will still be plenty of talent to come out and see. The best action will probably be on the Balcom canyon climb where riders will face an 11% grade.

Anyway it will be fun to have the ToC in Santa Clarita during a warm month. Hopefully it will be a boon to the City’s coffers as riders and support crew (maybe?) stay the night in town. What’s even better is that the opportunity for bitching about traffic will be minimized; it looks like the City will only need to do rolling closures of McBean and the segment of the Cross Valley Connector immediately east of Interstate 5.

I have predicted for some time that the cumulative effect of the hollowing out of Hart High School from just over 3,000 students to slightly less than 2,000 caused by flattening student populations and the opening of Golden Valley and West Ranch High Schools would one day work to devastating effect on Hart’s programs, the most vaunted being its historically dominant football team. Has that day finally arrived?

On Friday, September 10, while the Valencia Vikings were putting a beatdown on historically strong Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks behind the strong performance of running back Steven Manfro, the Hart Indians were receiving a 42-7 public spanking at the hands of Palmdale High School and their sophomore quarterback. The Indians committed eight turnovers in the fiasco, a record in the 22 year Herrington era. Behind 21-7 the Indians seemed to give new meaning to the term “quit” letting Palmdale rack up three more scores. Coach Herrington seemed absolutely inconsolable.

My question to local sports wonks: Are the Indians really that awful or is Palmdale High suddenly ascendant? If this is a portend of things to come this could make the Foothill League quite punishing with the Indians vying with Golden Valley to come last. I will freely admit that I am a Hart “hater” since 1998 but this is just sad and embarassing.

Thirty two national teams will compete at 12 venues over 30 days in South Africa, the first time an African nation has hosted the competition. Mexico and South Africa will kick things off this afternoon.

Given that there is an nine hour time difference between Santa Clarita and South Africa, catching the matches live is going to be challenging, but not impossible.

In fact, the first USA match will be on Saturday at 11:30 am our time between the US and England!

I went ahead and called around to a few places to see if they’ll be carrying the game live. Wings ‘n Things up in the Hasley Canyon neighborhood said the match will be on a few screens. I couldn’t reach Camarano’s Sports Bar in Saugus but I bet they’ll show it too. And the Alamo, that great Mexican place in the heart of Valencia, promised all-day World Cup viewing and said they’d tune into the USA/England match on Saturday.

But if you’re feeling adventurous, I bet there will be no better place to watch a match than at a Mexican taqueria during just about any match. Las Lomas Restaurant in Newhall across from Hart Park is one place I may check out.

If you don’t want to go out, you can watch live matches on ESPN, or check out Life Hacker’s tips on how to stream the matches to your computer.

Just what the hell is going on in Valencia Summit these days?

One of Awesometown’s nicest and most mature neighborhoods is stewing in bitterness, resentment, suspicion and enough intrigue to make the screen writers of Desperate Housewives blush.

Case in point: the strange case of the Summit Seals youth swim team. One would think an HOA youth swimming league wouldn’t arouse much controversy in Santa Clarita. After all, this place was built as a conformity factory for children. It’s why people move here: to raise their offspring in a healthy, safe, and supportive environment so that someday they too can become good suburban residents.

And there’s no place more built for children & families than Valencia with its meandering paseos, good schools, club houses, and, of course, pools and swim teams.

From what I’ve been hearing, the HOA swim teams of Valencia have existed for decades without much controversy. SCVTalk’s comment section has been bursting at the seams with people writing passionately about what the swim teams meant to them when they were young kids growing up in Valencia. By all accounts, the swim teams were -and remain- a positive, healthy, and fun activity for kids, their parents, and the community at large.

Until 2009-10 apparently.

Background on the Swim Team Dispute

Enter the Stratford HOA board, a sub-unit of the Master Association Summit HOA that represents 210 homes and townhomes at the top of the Summit neighborhood. The Stratford HOA has five board members and makes decisions affecting only the 210 homes in the Stratford complex. They have three pools that only they can use, but they pay dues to both the Stratford HOA and the Master Association HOA (representing 1019 homeowners).

Stratford’s complaints about the Summit Seals began in early 2009 and centered on cost, and, I kid you not, “overly use of the common area pool” . From the HOA’s February 2009 Minutes:

From there, say swim team parents and boosters, Stratford escalated the action against the Master Association’s swim team. By the fall, they had hired lawyers and centered their opposition to the Summit Seals on the grounds that the team was a liability for the community at large.

Stratford representatives, or those who are sympathetic with them, have posted on SCVTalk remarking that only 10% of the homeowners in the Summit have children on the swim team. They allege that swim parents are violating CC&Rs and say that the swim teams aren’t paying dues for the pool usage. Here’s one comment posted earlier this week:

Here’s the problem, for too many years pro swim team board members have disregarded our CC&R’s which clearly state that these activities are not allowed. Pool rules state diving is not allowed and signs are posted, yet the swim team members dive anyway. Homeowners are required to rent the facilities but the swim team gets a free pass.

As our community has matured, homeowners have become intolerant of the favoritism and encroachment on “homeowners rights of enjoyment” by the entitlement meantality of swim team families which represent less than 10% of the community.

Liability remains a huge issue and it’s unclear that the swim team has proper coverage. The Summit board agreed to suspend swim team activity until a resolution was met and the Summit board promptly violated that agreement by approving a new swim team contract.

Swim parents and boosters say they have been responsive to Stratford’s multiple and changing complaints. They tick off a list of accommodations:

Insurance liability raised from $1 million to $5 million, more than any other swim team in the SCV according to the parents

Practice times changes from 3-7pm to 2-6 pm

Eliminated championship meet-up at the pool

Eliminated annual parent vs kids’ water polo game

Eliminated “Dive in Movie” night

Also forbid children from diving into the pool; swimmers now have to push off while in the pool

As a result of these changes, swim parents pay 50% more in dues. The practice sessions take place only during the summer for four hours, five days a week for a total of six weeks. Actual competition meets are held Saturday mornings from 8-12. Swim team boosters say they use the pool for a total of about 128 hours during a given season.

Filming Kids?

But the accommodations haven’t been enough apparently because last week, the drama between Stratford and the swim teams reached a new and rather creepy level.

On Saturday, representatives of Stratford’s management company sent two individuals (including a PI who is a former LAPD officer according to the company) to film a swim meet in the Summit. A swim parent, quick on his toes and cognizant of the controversy, decided to point the camera back at the two individuals:

The individual who filmed the two men said that they were acting to “protect” the HOA.

The Stratford management company denies that the men were filming children and says they were acting only to film “the swim team board and participating parents” for litigation purposes:

With respect to filming Saturday’s registration: (1) the Stratford board are Stratford homeowners and have the right to be on common property they pay for; (2) no one was filming the children; (3) Stratford filmed the swim team board and participating parents at a public event in the common area (i.e., at the clubhouse/pool at issue here) solely as needed in litigation, through a private investigator and former LAPD officer, by request of our attorney. This was after Stratford had requested the names of participants on previous occasions, but the swim team would not cooperate. The film will remain in the custody of the private investigator until, if necessary, our lawyer must use it in litigation.

Since the filming incident, things have really exploded. Parents have created a “Save our Seals” Facebook group that has over 100 members. Members there have posted en masse here in an obvious effort to draw up more media attention. They’re not backing down like their former competitors in North Park, who have reportedly shut down their swim team after similar concerns.

What’s really happening here?

I think we have to look at who the board is composed of and who it represents. Swim parents have alleged that a senior executive of Henry Mayo Hospital is on the board and he is pushing to kill the Seals in retaliation for the Summit’s opposition (lead by Dave Gauny, a Summit resident) to the Mayo/G&L expansion plan. I don’t see any evidence to support that conclusion.

But consider two other board members (one former, one current): Bill Reynolds is currently on the board. Reynolds has a long and interesting history with SCVTalk. You’ll remember that we outed him as the man behind (or at least affiliated with in some way) the infamous Not a Ferry Fan videos that endlessly attack City Hall, the City Manager, myself, and others as urban growth evangelists. The NAFF video library is one long string of incoherent and contradictory NIMBY sentiments, all jumbled up together, with an extreme right-wing bow tied on top.

Then there’s Cam Noltemeyer. The activist, SCOPE member, and City Council commenter was recalled from the Master Association Board last year after an acrimonious and dispute-filled six months on the board. She too has expressed NIMBY sentiments (just today, in fact, she wrote that her neighborhood is under threat) and comes from the left side of the political spectrum.

NIMBYism, it turns out, is no respecter of political ideology. It doesn’t discriminate between 5 story medical office buildings and children’s swim teams. Some people just want to be left alone. And it’s entirely possible that the Stratford board, at least part of it, is representing an aging and maturing Valencia population, a population whose kids have grown up and moved on. A population of empty-nesters that resents the Valencia 2.0 Generation’s activities in their neighborhood. This isn’t about pool resources, liability, the way the kids dive into the pool or “overly use of the common area pool.”

Some in Valencia just don’t want happy kids and parents in their backyards. In Valencia. Of all places.

Which is a remarkable development and one that makes this story much bigger than just a dispute about a swim team.

It’s not exactly well known outside the cycling community, but every year bicycle racers from all over southern California converge on an empty industrial park for the Chuck Pontius Memorial Criterium. For those unfamiliar, a criterium is sort of like a cross between a regular bicycle road race like the Tour de France, and NASCAR. The cyclists race laps on a short circuit in tight groups. Crashes are not only possible, but sometimes likely.

It’s a pretty exciting style of bike racing because the courses are much faster than a regular road course (flat with wide sweeping turns) and you can watch the riders as they progress up or fall behind.

Anyway, some pictures from today’s pro-level race:

At least 80 riders raced on the course for exactly 60 minutes in the Industrial Center

The peloton, loose in the straights, tightens up and speeds through the corners at 25+ mph

No guts no glory baby!

The whooosh sound they make as they ride by is quite exciting

A Winner is Yuo! This guy from Team Helen's Cycles won the race. On the final lap he, and the peloton, hit 39mph

I enjoyed going to the race but it struck me as kind of sad that these athletes and the race were sequestered off in the vacant industrial center. Many other cities make an event out of their yearly criterium races, closing downtown streets and showcasing the best part of their towns for the athletes, visitors and fans. Merchants and food vendors come out to sell products to the fans, the streets are closed, and new people are exposed to the sport of cycling.

That would never fly here; the amount of bitching about closed streets in the SCV during the 2007 Tour of California was truly epic.

A shame. But a fun time nonetheless! Maybe next year I’ll try to race.

I say “looks like” because the official route announcement for America’s largest bicycle race won’t be made until Thursday, but the rumor-mill isn’t looking good for a fourth straight Tour of California stop in Santa Clarita.

Here’s what one bicycle website cooked up as an unofficial route for the 2010 ToC based on off-the-record comments and other info from ToC sponsors:

On the plus side this year’s race is supposed to have a lot more climbing. The stages along the Sierra Nevadas and in Big Bear ought to really challenge the riders. A time trial in Venice should be pretty cool to see.

At this point no one is mentioning Santa Clarita, while everyone seems fairly certain that Bakersfield will be included. I suppose that’s only fair considering we’ve had a stage stop or start (and in one year both) for the last three years. Happily, Bakersfield, Thousands Oaks, Woodland Hills, Venice and even Big Bear are well within driving distance for SCV cycling fans

When I asked last month, I didn’t get the sense that the City was really gung-ho about hosting a stage again this year; hosting a stage start as we did in 2009 probably wasn’t as profitable to the City as the stage start/stop was in 2007. The expense to the city was probably above $100k, if estimates from other cities are any indication. That said, for a few years our name was reliably splashed around the sporting community as world famous cyclists -including Lance Armstrong- challenged each other on our awesome canyon roads.

We’ll know for sure on Thursday!
