While the Superbowl did not set a ratings record it was a darn good average and a very good game for what has become probably the most common widespread cultural event in the US behind Thanksgiving and Easter. Jim Holt of the Signal weighs in with local coverage from blue collar hot spot Schoonerville on Bouquet Canyon and at least one private party. Like most I appreciated the game, the straight up versions of the National Anthem and America the Beautiful, and the actual singing of Cee Lo. Not appreciated were the commercials and the rest of the overproduced and lip synced Madonna half time show.

SIGNAL has the best summary of a tragic hit and run over the weekend that resulted in a fatality on Orchard Village Road. 68 year old John Anker, an SCV resident driving a car with Arizona plates, was taken into custody and then bonded out after he allegedly struck the still unnamed victim but was stopped shortly thereafter by deputies due to front end damage on his vehicle.

Myers Musings contemplates the usefulness of endorsements in local elections while Bob Kellar records a recent endorsement from District Attorney Steve Cooley. I can’t link to it but a Facebook page on the race exists with the primary posters from the SCVRA, the renegade bunch of Repubs that love to heckle incumbents. Laurie Ender and Ed Colley have not accepted an invitation to the SCVRA’s endorsement meeting this week and those folks are just shocked, shocked!

Our own Cameron Smyth sticks out his political neck (that’s sarcasm) that would prevent public employees from receiving pensions after conviction of a felony. Some readers of this blog think it is a felony to be a public employee!

A local Vietnam Vet has a very nuanced letter about military spending and programs. Writings like this provide me hope when compared to what seems like the majority of LTE’s that are recycling talking points the writer heard on FOX or MSNBC.

Second LTE bemoans lack of artsy films in SCV. Don’t these writers know that we need three screens for “Chipwrecked?”

Last LTE relates the “amazing” story of an elderly patient taken to Newhall Memorial and not killed on the spot!

“As far as annexing (Jakes Way) in, I think that if we had a choice, we would just cut it out and move it somewhere else like Palmdale.”
Laurie Ender, The Signal 2/3/12

Your average Jake’s Way resident is more likely to have their life impacted by crime and quality-of-life issues than to commit a crime or be a nuisance to their neighbors. It’s fair to say that the crime in their area affects them more than it affects anyone else. I’ve known a lot of hard working people for whom Jake’s Way was their first residence in Santa Clarita. College graduates, families with kids trying to make ends meet, people trying to pick up the pieces in their life yet stay in the same town where they grew up. Knuckleheads, too.

It’s a mixed bag, a problem area, to put it kindly. But it’s a problem that deserves our attention in a way that respects the law-abiding residents of the area.

I’ve had a guarded admiration for Laurie Ender, far more so than most, but this is really indefensible and completely out of line for someone in her position: the Mayor of Santa Clarita. Of course it’s bad for a mayor of one city to demean a nearby city, but it’s far worse to speak so dismissively of an area that’s about to become part of the city.

Interestingly, she offered an apology to the Mayor of Palmdale, but not to the residents of Jake’s Way. This is one of those times where the apology actually makes it worse:

“I would like to reiterate my apology to Palmdale,” she said. “While I was trying to make the point that we need to address a problem, I used a poor choice of words. I’m glad that (Palmdale) Mayor Ledford has accepted my apology.”

Ditto for Ed Colley, whose comments were even worse, but he’s just a longshot candidate.

In annexing Jake’s Way, the city is taking on a serious challenge, voluntarily. It’s going to affect our crime statistics, which won’t make for very good press, but it’s a challenge that we need to take on for the sake of our community. I’m optimistic that the city will do a much better job than the county in every sense, not just in terms of law enforcement resources, but we need our leadership to act like adults to do it right.

One knows its a slow news day when the Signal big news stories include:

Announcement of a dog license sweep in unincorporated Valencia;

YMCA has a Pinewood Derby at Saugus High School;

Pictures of OLPH construction kickoff;

Energy efficient lights at the City parks; and

Overnight road closures on the 5 and 14.

On an equally humorous note, Dave Bossert over at WRB pens a rambling tome on how ANYONE would be better on City Council than Laurie Ender, which then begs the question: Will his head explode when she comes first in the City Council election?

In the “the po’ people are going to murder us all in our sleep” department, our man Jon Hatami pens an alarmist piece equating the elimination of Section 8 fraud investigators in the Antelope Valley with the imminent invasion of a horde of undesirables into Santa Clarita, also (surprise, surprise) at WRB. Can someone tell me when it is safe to come out from under my bed?

On a more serious note:

SIGNAL reports that two 11 year olds are detained after starting a brush fire in Canyon Country. YIKES!!! But in a wonderful twist one of the boys confesses to his father who actually brings him to the firefighters to confess.

I’m not pleased about this one. SIGNAL reports how County will offer 50% off unpaid traffic tickets prior to January 1, 2009. Way to reward scofflaws!!

Tea Partier Petz asks Santa Clarita government to interfere with people’s constitutional right to “light up the night sky like its Vegas” in an LTE because he likes to look at the “stars.” Sounds like educational elitism to me!

While we are certainly not in the business of plugging fundraisers, this email* from the Scott Wilk campaign got my attention, to say the least.

It terms of raw political capital, it’s safe to that Smyth is only second to Buck McKeon in the SCV. With McKeon’s wife in the race, Smyth’s support in the race to fill his expiring Assembly seat is just about the biggest prize up for grabs in this campaign.

There’s no mention of an endorsement here or elsewhere, and even if he did, Smyth has endorsed opposing candidates before. But to my recollection, lending his name and time for a fundraiser in a heavily contested primary is a first for Cameron. I don’t know much about his history with Wilk, but for what it’s worth Smyth’s would-be Senate campaign gave $250 to Wilk’s COC race last year, the only donation it made during the last filing period.

I really expected Smyth to keep an arm’s distance from this race. Consider that Wilk is running against not only the wife of a very powerful Congressman, but also Smyth’s very own local field representative. We’ll just have to see how this plays out.

*Full text here, if you’re into that kinda thing. Note the clever minimum donation of $99, which is just shy of the $100 disclosure threshold.

On his tombstone Thomas Jefferson instructed the stone cutter to note his authorship of the Declaration of Independence, the Statute on Religious Freedom in Virginia (Predecessor to the First Amendment) and the founding of the University of Virginia. President of the United States is not mentioned. While the Signal notes in their headline that the recently deceased Clyde Smyth was a former member of the City Council, SCVNEWS gets it half right by noting his School leadership, for which he, like Jefferson, would probably want to be most known.

Surprise, Surprise, Surprise! Hart District Officials tell the SIGNAL that the opening of a Castaic High School must be pushed back to 2015 (one year) due to the enlargement of the property. I have an over/under on the year of opening at NEVER!

SIGNAL reports how motorists celebrate needed rain by crashing into each other on local freeways. How many SCVTalk commenters will assert the City needs to build a giant flying saucer to suck up broken cars and debris UFO style?

Bizarre story in the SIGNAL. Scott Wilk, who by the way has not formally announced his candidacy for the 38th Assembly District, “releases” Tony Strickland from his earlier endorsement due to Strickland’s nascent Congressional campaign. Can Tony not afford to upset Buck McKeon?

Well, the redevelopment agencies are being dismantled, and there was not the zombie apocalypse predicted by City staff and Councilmembers. City Council will contemplate tonight the winding down of the Newhall Redevelopment Agency and the repayment of the $93 million in debt incurred to date. SIGNAL City spokesperson Gail Ortiz claims that already dedicated and grandfathered tax revenues will repay the debt, but I say from her mouth to God’s ear.

John Boston weighs in with weekly humor over at the WRB.

Two “sort of” hit and runs on Friday night during rush hour. One driver was arrested at the scene and the Sheriff’s know who owns the other car, so justice will be served soon. SIGNAL has the story.

R&S Automotive, one of those most “evil” auto repair shops in Newhall, holds a six hour seminar for women to teach them how to properly maintain their cars and feel comfortable negotiating with auto shops. SIGNAL Does this mean they won’t need to use the age old trick of saying “I have to call my husband?”

Boy seriously hurt at City skatepark. SIGNAL Commenter blames City and specifically Frank Ferry. Seriously?

OJ Simpson was accused of the murder of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman the week we moved to Dallas, Texas. Two years later when we moved to Valencia Philip Vannatter, the lead investigator in the case, was one of the Grand Marshals of the Newhall 4th of July parade. Weird symmetry. He died over the weekend, age 70.

I know its not cool linking to one’s own work, but I point out in Sunday’s Myers Musings how four years ago the five major candidates for City Council (one incumbent and four challengers) had been running campaigns for a year at this point, contrasting with the newly formed campaigns that have really not gotten under way. I predict a short and uneventful campaign with the incumbents winning. Commenters talk about term limits but to qualify a local initiative one would need to get signatures equal to about 80% of the number of folks that vote IN TOTAL in local elections. Good luck with that!

Leon Worden makes a joke on SCVTV’s Facebook page on availability of tickets to a rumored fight between Junior High students. SCV-MOM’s takes issue and gets roundly mocked by other users. When I am asked personally to weigh in (Facebook sends out a notification.) I say I like to keep myself “unclenched.”

In the “I guess he is voting for Ron Paul” department local resident Mike Stafford gets caught using an illegal brine based water softener which he then disconnects. Mr. Stafford wonders how he was caught: Are the water authorities evil geniuses with a line into every Santa Clarita home to test water emissions, or did a neighbor inform on him in a Stalinesgue way? SIGNAL

I am having trouble linking to it directly right now but Dave Bossert over at WRB comes out as pretty much the sole voice in support of the the proposed Board of Supervisor’s rule limiting community participation speakers to one minute rather than the “too generous” three. Mr. Bossert thinks this will force people to be more succinct and prepare their remarks. Only he does not see the irony.

Apparently there is a Chinese School in the SCV that holds classes in Chinese culture and language on the weekends. They recently got ready for the celebration of the Chinese New Year.

The interwebs buzz with rumors of a Republican challenger to Buck McKeon in the open primary. Anyone have any ideas who that might be? A stray comment puts my guess at Dante Acosta, father of slain local warrior Rudy.

A man was killed while walking along the Newhall Pass truck route. He was on the shoulder but moved into active traffic and was hit by a truck. SCVNews

A couple of dry cleaning chemicals were found in the soil and ground water near a Newhall dry cleaner. This alarmed members of the neighboring St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church and parents of children attending its preschool. However, the Department of Toxic Substances Control performed an investigation and assured parents at a meeting yesterday that “there is no risk to either going to church or bringing your children to school.” No update from the owner of Palace Cleaners, who expressed some frustration earlier this week. SIGNAL

Hart’s Director of Facilities, Paul Rivas, has been investigated for an alleged conflict of interest. The report found over $1M in inspection services went to a business he was involved with, a fictitious name for which provided cover. H.R. recommends he be dismissed. SIGNAL

A fourth man has been arrested in connection with the theft and attack at Dooly’s Liquor and Market. The suspects allegedly stole beer, came back later to get the security tape, then slashed the store clerk’s arm in an ensuing fight. SCVNews

Roy Burns, a Santa Clarita man with a career of military and police service, teaches cops how to survive ambushes with a paintball lesson in the hills. ContraCostaTimes

Local girl’s song will be part of a campaign to make a “Beautiful and Bald Barbie” to support children suffering from the effects of chemotherapy, with alopecia, and so on. Her father is a doctor with Santa Clarita’s Bladder Wellness Center. KHTS

Discussing SoCal Edison smart meters makes for a lively Canyon Country Advisory Committee meeting. About 70% of the meters have already been installed in Santa Clarita. SIGNAL

Charles Floyd Johnson, a writer and producer, talks about the film industry and Santa Clarita. His film about the Tuskegee Airmen, Red Tails, is out today. SIGNAL

A rural outdoor light overlay zone would update outdoor lighting policy in unincorporated areas of the valley, helping to preserve dark skies at night. This is doubtless a response to Petz’s oft-voiced concerns over nighttime light pollution. SCVNews
