I was expecting all sorts of noise from the usual suspects on this.

SOS boards have no mention.
Signal LTEs are silent.
Jeff's post brought out Petz and Berta as the lone supporting voices.

I scratched my head a bit on the timing - the City announces it literally with one business day's notice (Friday -> Monday).  Is that a factor?  Or are we collectively out of breath after Kellargate and Arizona?

Or am I the only one who is sensing a vacuum, and this is really the calm before the storm?

I thought it could be a move to depress turnout, a passive-aggressive way of saying, "See, we did what we said we were going to do."

Or, Jeff, it may just be that people are assuming that as you suggested this may be just lip service and that don't want to waste their time on something that has little or no substance.

This is my note to Mayor Weste

Mayor Weste,

I am concerned about the short notice given to the public for Monday's immigration forum.  The first I heard about this meeting was in today's Signal.

When was this meeting planned and the public given notice of this meeting?  Does it meet the necessary protocol and statutory requirements for public notice ?

It is very difficult for many citizens to schedule their day and prepare for such an important meeting when we are not given time.

Sincerely,

Steve Petzold

My Prager Group is meeting tonight and Petz is unwilling to cancel.  Roger Gitlin has assured me that he will attend the Immigration Forum.  The tactic  employed by the council shows the disdain that they have for the citizens of Santa Clarita.  They give a short notice and schedule the meeting for a larger facility to indicate "limited interest" in the issue.  The City of Santa Clarita should declare itself a "Rule of Law " City and urge it's citizens to boycott car dealers in Los Angeles.

Disappointed Petz won't be able to  see their faces when Meg Whitman walks in tonight and calls the bluff.

That is true, but I wanted it to sound like I had less notice.

Not necessary.  There is no requirement that you be born to be eligible to enter council chambers.

Here is the response from Laurene Weste to my short notice concern.

Dear Mr. Petzold:

Thank you for your email and inquiring about the noticing for tonight's Special Meeting that will focus on immigration.  This meeting was noticed in compliance with state law, and in fact the City provided more notice than state law requires.  Since this is a "special meeting" of the City Council, 24 hours notice must be provided.  This means that notice had to have been provided by Sunday, June 27 at 6:00 p.m.   This City actually provided notice by Thursday, June 24 at 5:00 p.m.  The City posted the agenda on the City's webiste, posted the agenda at the City Clerk's Office and outside City Hall, and faxed notices to The Signal and the library.

If you have any other questions regarding our noticing requirements, please feel free to contact Sarah Gorman, City Clerk at 661-255-4392 or sgorman@santa-clarita.com

Sincerely,

Laurene Weste
Mayor

Here is the report of Santa Clarita's Independent Minuteman-Roger Gitlin

Greetings patriots:

I wanted to give you a report of tonight's Santa Clarita City Immigration / Education meeting at Center Point.

I am not certain why the hastily-called meeting was called an immigration education meeting; nonetheless, the meeting started promptly at 6:00 PM. I estimating there were perhaps 200 people in the activities room. Overwhelmingly,  those present were in support of Arizona SB 1070, and expressed their frustration with lack of action by our elected government officials.

The invited panel consisted of the following:

Judy London, attorney for a group calling itself Public Council. Professor London was quite obviously a biased advocate for those she termed " undocumented immigrants." London delivered a brief history of the illegal immigration problem dating back to World War II. Ms. London delivered many, many misleading comments regarding the discontinued Bracero Program, Amnesty I, under the Reagan presidency in 1986, and Prop 187 in 1996. If Professor London was there to deliver " educational" remarks to the audience of Santa Claritans, she failed to do so. Her comments were propagandist and she quite obviously supports Comprehensive Immigration Reform ( another amnesty). After the meeting, I attempted to secure her e mail and  she did not choose to give me her card and give me that information referring her to website. What website ? She would not render that information to me, either. She exited the building quite quickly after the meeting adjourned.

LASD Chief Alexander Yim and Commander Arthur Eng. Both high-ranking law enforcement officers spoke about the LASD's role in enforcement of federal law. The edict from Sheriff Baca is clear. The LASD will NOT enforce federal immigration law. My take on the problem of law enforcement by the LASD is the agency has prioritized the huge problem and with less and less funds available from a strapped  Los AngelesCounty Board of Supervisors, the LASSD is go after criminal illegal aliens, first and foremost. I know many of on this e mail blast have condemned Sheriff Baca for his lack of action and his opposition to Arizona SB 1070. I cannot get on the same page with those who feel that way. Though Sheriff Baca and I may disagree on the implementation of California Penal Code 834b, I do believe the Sheriff is doing the best he can with limited funds.

Santa Clarita City assistant attorney Joseph Montez, who delivered information of the Redondo Beach City ordinance outlawing illegal aliens standing on corners, blocking traffic, and costing that City precious resources dealing with the problem of illegal immigration. The ordinance was currently upheld by extremely liberal 9th District Court of Appeals. Another appeal has been waged by the opposition, so we shall wait. And the City of Santa Clarita is closely monitoring the progression of that law. I remain hopeful the Redondo Beach Ordinance will survive the Court challenge. I say Bravo to Redondo Beach.

Regrettably, representatives from Immigration and Customs Enforcement were invited but did d not show up.
That in itself speaks volume about the indifference on this extremely emotional issue in the eyes of there Obama Administration.

All City Council member weighed in. I want to commend Council members Ender, McClean and Mayor Weste who all agreed the City can and should do more including implementing E-Verify. I am sorry to say, Councilman Frank Ferry was mum on any support by the City to do more.

Then, City Councilman Bob Kellar spoke. Every time I become frustrated by our elected government officials, along comes a gem like Bob Kellar. Ladies and Gentleman, Bob Kellar was magnificent in his oratory telling the audience he hears and feels their frustration, he calls illegals : law breakers" which they most certainly, and if Bob Kellar were running or higher office, I would do anything and everything I could to put this man in a position of responsibility..

I was one of a dozen or so speakers. I intend to write a commentary this week-end in The Signal outlining my comments about tonight and how I see this problem. So stay tuned.

Signal's take, which focuses on ICE's absence.

http://www.the-signal.com/section/36/article/30459/

They also mention there were "100+" in attendance rather than 200.
