I just checked and Girl with the Dragon Tattoo will be showing in Canyon Country soon - finally something I can go to watch here!

To get back to the original theme of this post, did you ever count up how many G and PG movies show it his town? PG-13 and R rated movies are the Hollywood staple and some of us actually enjoy the holidays when there actually are movies released we can see with our children.

Personally, my wife and I gave up "R" rated movies a long time ago. We simply are sick of the violence, vulgarities and sex themes that Hollywood seems to love today.

Alpiner, even among those that enjoy R rated movies, some enjoy the sex and others enjoy the violence.  There just is no accounting for taste.

Whatever you do Alpiner, DO NOT go see Girl With The Dragon Tattoo!

It is packed with violence, vulgarities and SEX!

I loved it!

But, do go see The Artist!

Excellent movie: no sex, no vulgarities, no violence, no talking!

I also loved this one!

I heard a news report the other day stating that movie theaters had not done as well as expected during December. One condition leading to this was reported as the large number of "kiddie" movies out at once.

No surprise.  I certainly don't wanna take a kid to the movies now with how high the ticket prices have gone.  And if I do, its to the matinee where its cheap as dirt!

Saw War Horse and loved it. The violence that we see is appropriate because of the subject matter and realism.

Violence and sex in movies isn't the problem.  It's the context, how it's depicted, etc.  And that's what sets a good movie apart from a bad one.

To some degree you are right K....Schlinder's List is a perfect example. The violence was there because it was essential to the story and real. But too often today nude scenes, sex, obscenities, are simply there because the screenwriters evidently want to be that low. For every Schinler's List there are thousands of other vulgar movies.

What I really hate is how much of this has now permeated to the small screen. You really realize that there is no such thing anymore as family hour when you have young children. God bless the DVR and the DVD player.

The Artist is at Edwards Valencia on one screen.
(The Lorax has three screens)

I assume the theaters know what sells - otherwise they will soon be gone.

I was mostly pointing out that The Artist is playing for those (like me) who haven't seen it yet and who usually don't go "over the hill" for movies.
